Great job by the umpires. Plate couldn’t see it, so she checked. Base saw it and gave the information. Plate changed the call. Beautiful thing. The silent treatment is money.

@@Not_a_smart_man I'm a soccer referee, and we deal with it quite simply. Until someone who's been sent off leaves, I can't continue the match, and the remedy for being unable to continue is to end the match and file the game sheet with the league as a forfeit/abandonment by the offending team. I've never had to threaten someone with that after showing a red card, but my prepared plan for that occasion is to not say that to the player or coach whose been sent off, but to tell that team's captain or coach who is still in the game. "I can't continue this game until they leave, and it will go into the record books as a forfeit if I can't continue...." I suspect that would get them moving.

Excellent analysis, and excellent work by the umpires. It wasn't an easy call to make, AND there was no replay, AND there were only two of them to handle both the call and the aftermath, yet they got the call correct and handled the situation exactly as the regulations say they should.

It's weird that baseball doesn't have some type of penalty for being unsporting after being ejected. In football, teams an ejected player or coach can still cause the team to accumulate unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. One play that comes to mind was Kendall Langford's ejection in 2013. He was ejected for contacting a game official. On his way to the locker room, he threw his helmet and the Rams received another unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

The crew chief waited too long to come down and rodeo clown the manager off. Once the ejection is issued and the ejected person doesn’t remove themselves, the ejecting umpire needs to step away and again…let their partner in 2-man or the crew chief move them along.
@teebob21
@teebob21 23 дня назад
I know what you're saying but in this case, I disagree. The manager got ejected because he wanted to plead his case to the base umpire. This is one of the weaknesses of the 2 umpire system: sometimes you have to rodeo clown your own ejection because having the CC come in to do it just gives the arguer what they want. We don't have the full unedited clip, but IMO this was well done given what the officials had to work with.

@@teebob21 Oh I absolutely give them a B+ here! This could have gone far worse. But with umpiring we strive for perfection on Opening Day and then we improve from there as the season wears on. Big deal…the coach gets to “get what he wants”. The chief said very little. The object is to move the game along once the ejection has occurred. And no matter how many umpires you have working a game, it’s never one umpire overruling someone else. It’s never one umpire telling another umpire to change their call. The crew of 2, 3, 4 or 6 umpires gets together and everyone present gives what they saw. It is then up to the umpire who made the call to take in the information and decide whether they wish to overturn their own call. But don’t take my word for it…it’s all right there in the MLBUA manual.

Especially when the crew follows all the correct procedures and gets the call right (the batter knew he knocked the ball out of the catcher's glove), this sort of thing should not happen without further consequences. I have long propounded a rule in MLB whereby any participant who continues (or starts) arguing after being ejected should be subjected to a fine of $1000 per second until they stop, payable to the umpire they're abusing. In the minors, of course, it would need to be a proportionally lower rate, but it should still be enough to hurt. Only then will this behavior change.

Wishy washy. If it was the first strike of the AB, then , in MLB, there is no penalty, it is already a swing and a miss, the penalty for swing and a miss, is strike. Runners on different story, would call interference. This "arguement" was non-sensical, no foul tip, backswing interference, dead ball strike three. what IS the problem?
