“Managing Up"
Ever heard of it?
When I first heard it I thought it sounded like some sort of big company corporate lingo...
BUT…as I’ve grown a team and scaled a company, I’ve come to realize how important it is.
This concept is SUPER important for two groups of people:
1. Managers / Leaders: this will free up soooo much time if you train your team on this and hire/fire based on people being “low maintenance superstars"
2. Employees: this is one of the fastest way to get promoted and take on more responsibility in your company (even a leadership position if you want it)
In this video, I break down what it is and HOW to use it in your company.
This would be a good one to send to your team (cough, cough).
Thank me later. 😜
How do you practice managing up at your company? What’s one way you’ve seen this implemented? Let me know in the comments below!

Hello Chandler, do you mind if I use your video to base my own Medium article off of? I read the book, Managing up, and it helped a lot but I would like to use your videos as a refresher.

Be coachable. This resonates with me. I've often hoped for that when coaching others, but I had to take a good look at myself to see if I was living up to that expectation. I think active introspection is always gonna help me "check myself" before I wreck myself or sabotage my own learning potential. Managing up for me translates to respect for your boss and genuine concern when it comes to the load they bear. This is something I want to improve on exponentially.

Be coachable. Show extreme ownership and full accountability. Be Proactive - over communicating , clear their path. Be a low maintenance superstar. Align your goals with your managers goals

Love that you've included a solid hockey reference!! I'm always asking myself how I can improve and get better. I once asked my manager, "in your eyes, where is my biggest opportunity for growth? Where am I weakest? How can I improve?" Asking these questions really allowed us to have an open and honest chat about areas of my work I needed to improve on. These conversations are important and allowed me to grow so I could do a better job of managing up. Great philosophy.

Way to manage up! Love that you're asking those questions. It definitely goes both ways

"It's a combination of communicating your priorities and seeking feedback". So many gems here and don't think I've ever heard anyone explain this concept in the way you just did. Must watch for literally everyone that actually cares about their career :)

Agreed, such a great explanation of how employees can share the burden of leadership and manage up!

This reminds me of some of the concepts I learned in The 360 Degree Leader by John C. Maxwell. Most people think they can only Lead/Manage DOWN. But you can also lead/manage horizontally with your peers, and UP as you lay out here in this video. Great stuff.

This GREAT advice is so extremely opposite of everything I've experienced in my professional career. It's time to get out of the blame-game trap and start figuring out what works. And the responsibility starts with me. If I follow these tips, it will be like a breath of fresh air to any over-burdened manager and may even facilitate a change that leads to more positive feedback. Love this!

Love this! The first time I heard the term "manage up" was actually about 10 years ago from my manager's manager. She told me, "Myles, don't expect your manager to always tell you what to do, don't hesitate to share your ideas. Have you heard the term, manage up?" Then proceed to explain to me what it is! It makes so much sense! And I think it boils down to one thing, communication! Communication is very important in any kind of relationship, especially with one that you worked for and with.

Has this happened to me? More times than I can count :) Sometimes, I think I do pretty well at this. Other times, I'm acutely aware of my need to improve. And of course, I love when my team practices this with me, because as you said, it frees me up so much to blaze the trail instead of tending to fires. How do I practice it? This connects pretty seamlessly with "I intend to" statements, which I've tried to make a regular part of my vernacular. Such a great video and such an important concept! #continuousimprovement

It’s possible in some companies but some corporate where you get hit from every side this could be challenging and you many need specific mentoring in that case.

This Chandler person clearly doesn’t grasp the concept he’s supposed to be explaining. He gives advice on how to be the best employee in your manager’s eyes. That is not what ‘managing up’ means. Managing Up is not about anticipating and meeting your manager’s preexisting expectations. It is about communicating with your manager to steer and curate those expectations for mutual benefit. When I know that the timeline for an upcoming project is unrealistic, I manage up by communicating this information to my boss in a way that they can understand without getting miffed. Often lower-level staff have the best grasp of capacities, logistics, and limitations, and it’s crucial for everyone’s sake that those insights reach the ears of decision-makers.

💯 This video is not about managing up.

Sorry Chandler, you might be a bit young and perhaps inexperienced to understand the real concept of managing up. What you are teaching is how to be a better worker instead. Managing up is a totally different concept. It’s about getting out of that box of a basic worker. It’s about understanding your bosses perspective so it can help you connect with them to give him what he wants while also getting what you want. It’s about connecting on a deeper level so you can work better together.
