From the beginning, it was Manboys plan to get Franklin's plug; the whole "polite" act was to make Franklin and his crew feel more at ease with him. He literally played both sides until the hit on Skully failed and then picked who he thought was the winning team. I personally think saying Manboy is anything close to being the "good guy" of his arc is naïve considering he was a snake the entire time he was on screen.

Finding a more efficient way of doing business, that also makes more money, doesn't seem like a "bad guy" move to me. Franklin did that with Avi, but had actual success. However, I'm arguing that Manboy is a good guy considering the circumstances and who his opponents are. He's the lesser of two evils, not a saint.

im pretty sure Manboy made sure the hit on Skully failed on purpose. That way Franklin would now be involved in the war between Skully and Manboy. And of course Skully would want his revenge. With Franklin out of the way Manboy would be able to takeover.

I understand that you see Franklin as a complete villain but it's a lot of gray in those areas too.. Honestly, that's what makes this show very well-received because there's no definitive white or black when it comes to real life situations. Then we revisit the situation of him killing Andre, that had to happen because Andre would not let the situation go. When Andre found out that Franklin supplier with the CIA, what did Franklin do? Franklin told him to pack up and get mail and leave because he knew the consequences of Andre exposing the CIA. Which would have gotten Andre's entire family killed. Franklin asked him to leave and Andre stubbornly told him no and that he has a copy of the information of Reid Thompson and photographs. So when it comes down to that situation Andre put himself in that situation by forcing Franklin hand. The same thing could be said about Alton Williams AKA Franklin´s father. He goes behind his family back to do an exclusive tell-all with a reporter knowing that his son is dealing with the CIA and he expected that all fleeing the Cuba we'll keep the CIA off of them. There0 Is only one word that can explain that type of logic (dumb).
@JaneforShort
@JaneforShort 2 года назад
All of this is true. I still stand by what I said regardless of the context though because Franklin brought crack to his neighborhood. That's what villainized him to me the most. His desire for power and killing his lifelong friends is just another drop in the bucket. Also, idc what anyone says, Andre didn't have to die and neither did Kevin, at least not by Franklin's hand. I do agree that there's no definitive answer as to who is right/wrong, but when it comes to ManBoy, I said what I said lol. Thanks for commenting!

That's something that I just can't get about the fans.What part of *federal government* don't they get.And Franklin's family is just as weird, everybody except Unc & Lee knew Teddy is CIA.But yet, every time something happens here they come blaming Franklin & acting like he had a choice.Especially Cissy who's really to blame for the story getting out.You trusted the same husband that left you for a decade so he could get drunk in piece,the same husband you knew allegedly murdered his own cousin for working with the feds.He should've been the last person to know who the plug really was.Mel got her daddy killed & her daddy got himself killed.She let Andre think it was Franklin she was always doing shit with & got her strung out which made him really go after him.She threw him under the bus & set all that in motion but nobody wants to talk about how wild she was even before she started messing with Franklin or when he wasn't anywhere around.I also think she knows about the CIA part because after Irene talked to her, that's when she really started looking into Franklin.He is not the bad guy,he's surrounded by a bad family that he takes the blame for.Of course he expects loyalty.

Your analysis is that Man boy is the good guy because in comparison he didn't do evil things like Franklin. Yet, omitted that he kept a women hostage and in his emoloy by threatening her brother who was incarcerated and surrounded by crips. He never cared about his neice only used her death as a means to end his war with skully to focus on taking out Franklin to get to the plug. Man boy was never the good guy, he was captivating and smart but he was evil.

I still think he was better than Franklin. I definitely left that part about Tanosse out (idk why now that I think about it, not on purpose though), but Franklin treats people the exact same way. I like this perspective. Never thought of it in this way. But, from Franklin's perspective, if I was him, I would have chosen to back Skully because Manboy was aiming for that plug. Also, he wasn't as loyal to his people as he probably should have been considering how everything tuned out. But, I knew Franklin was the badguy when he started selling rock and ALL THE EXAMPLES YOU MENTIONED. He becomes more of a sociopath over the seasons, cold, and treacherous to those who really cared and watched out for him. What he did to Andre and his father was disgusting. Also, he was reckless and stupid how he handled Kevin and Andre. What he did to the business owners of the bookstore was triple disgusting and then he expects loyalty. What took me out was all this "love" and "adoration" for MEL as if he expected to just continue to stay in her life AFTER HE MURDERED HER FATHER.

The thing about Manboy is he was about business and playing by the rules. Skully on the other hand was crazy and unpredictable. How do you do business with someone who you KNOW could flip out and kill you because you said the wrong thing or because he interpreted something you said wrong? I don't see where Manboy was wrong. Say you and I were business partners and someone from my crew was intentionally moving in on your territory. You come speak with me and I pretty much tell you to charge it to the game or it is what it is and then later that same person ends up killing someone close to you in your family, aren't you gonna want blood?

Yes Manboy is a more business man and play things by book. That means he is cold and selfish to always make a decision that benefits the business. Just like he giving up the driver who actually did nothing wrong. On the other hand, Franklin still cares about his family and brothers and willing to break rules to protect Leon. So, if you definition of good guy is keep it cold blood and keep it all business, then sure
@waxeightoneeight
@waxeightoneeight 2 года назад
Franklin for sure a villain, but that doesn't mean Manboy is the good guy. The "redeeming moments" of his mentioned in this video weren't done to serve some altruistic purpose-his only concern was his own self-interests. For example, Manboy wanted Franklin to turn over Leon because he knew it'd solidify the end of the conflict he had started with Skully. He was never concerned with seeking any actual justice for his family and the fact that Khadijah called him out on it when she said he had been putting more effort into locating Franklin's plug than finding his niece's killer proves it. Also, Manboy did not get shot and stabbed simply for "defending his business and family." He provoked violent turf wars and tried to encroach on Franklin's connect in the course of conducting his business, and it wasn't like he was murdered by Franklin for trying to avenge his fallen niece, like Khadijah was. In the end, Manboy was murdered for getting too greedy and thus proving an important element of the series: nobody is the good guy in the drug game. P.S. Franklin did not lose his virginity to Tanosse. I believe he had lost it to Mel earlier in the series and even if he didn't, it was implied that he had hooked up with a woman while he was away on his trip to Panama with Avi in season three.
@JaneforShort
@JaneforShort 2 года назад
As I've mentioned before, I was not arguing that Manboy was "altruistic." I was arguing that he was less problematic than Franklin, or even, "the lesser of two evils." In what world would I be arguing that anybody on Snowfall is a humanitarian? Even Alton, who was the most community oriented, used drug money as a means to an end before wising up, there are clearly no good guys. I could argue that Manboy was killed for trying to find the plug, but not for the turf war because Franklin took part in it as well. Also, it was part if the gang violence of the time period. It would have taken place with or without Franklin (which is why Leon told him to stay out of it). Also, he did lose his virginity to Tanosse. It took place prior to the series. Claudia mentioned it to him while she and Louie were together before Louie cracked her head open (season 2 episode 1), which is why he easily opens up to her when they reunite. He and Jerome also briefly discuss it at some point, but I'd have to look back to see when that took place. I've watched this series several times (to write these videos) I don't just make up stuff without proof.

@@JaneforShort the title of your video is, literally, “Manboy is the good guy.” I don’t think there’s a single redeeming quality to his character. @waxeightoneeight 2 года назад
@@JaneforShort I never assumed you were arguing that Manboy was altruistic to begin with and that's not what I was implying when I said his "redeeming moments" weren't done to serve some altruistic purpose. I am simply stating that he was only concerned with his own self-interests and anything that he might have done to help others was merely incidental in advancing those interests-he certainly never did anything to benefit anyone else when it was counterintuitive to achieving his own interests, like Franklin did. For that reason, I cannot consider Manboy to be the "lesser-of-two-evils" either. While Franklin was a monster for murdering his neighbor and beating his own father like you mentioned, at least he was still concerned with the welfare of those around him and risked everything to protect them when he had no incentive to intervene or when it would've been wiser for him and his business not to. For example, Franklin: used his political leverage to have Officer Nix placed on desk-duty when he threatened his mother; set aside his conflict with Andre to search for Mel in the previous season and did not snitch on her when she shot him in retaliation for her father's murder; and refused to sell out Leon to his rivals when it would have been in his best interest to do so. Although his confrontations with Mel, Leon, Louie, and Jerome at the end of the season seem to suggest that Franklin might become even more cold, calculated, and self-centered than Manboy ever was, I am currently unconvinced that Manboy was the good guy between the two.

Leon told him and Franklin still insisted on doing business with him. The entire time ManBoy had Tinase trying to get Franklin's plug, which was his plan from the beginning and I'm not made at him for trying to get to the top but I think we give Franklin way too much credit when it comes to being smart and calculated because it should have been a red flag not to do business with someone that he went to school with, that could have approached him himself, but decides to send shooters to spy on him instead.

Later he chokes Wanda but tells Franklin and Leon he would never hit a woman, even saying Bootsy put his hands on her. Bootsy saved Wanda from Manboy. Add to that he was blackmailing T by having her brother savagely beaten. He almost killed T. He probably would’ve killed Khadijah if it would’ve help him get the plug. Manboy also keeps mentioning how Skully is crazy but he’s pretty unhinged too. Skully, for all his craziness, makes just as many smart decisions as Manboy, if not more. @JaneforShort
@JaneforShort 2 года назад
I leave a lot of context out because I assume people that find these videos have seen the show already. I definitely understand the context, I take a lot of notes on this show lol. I didn't really go in depth about my thoughts on Andre, but I understand why Andre wanted to go to war. He watched his daughter become a basehead because the boy next door, that he helped raise, started selling rock (and had been banging his daughter). Then, he watched half of the neighborhood become addicts too. Andre was always trying to make a positive impact on his community. I just think Franklin should have tried harder to end that beef. I understand what Franklin did, but that doesn't mean I agree. I also think it would've been cool to see an Andre and Franklin rivalry for an extended period of time. Like watching them plot against each other (like they did with Manboy) I think that would've made good TV lol.

@@JaneforShort those are legitimate reasons to be upset with the neighbor kid, I just wish the same way how you laid that information out while making your point, even though we’ve both seen the show, I wish you afforded Franklin that same luxury lol I should’ve left a comment on your Franklin video tbh but you mentioned this one in that one and I ended up here cause it sounded interesting but when it comes to everyone else you point out why what happened happened but with Franklin it’s like nope he did all these things he did wrong intentionally and without legitimate reason. Framing matters when making points, like calling Andre “his neighbor who helped raised him” and not “the police officer next door who watched him get unlawfully choked out by another cop” or “the police officer who’s gonna get killed anyway for interfering with the CIA” paints his murder very differently. They would’ve had a fun back and forth but Andre thought he was untouchable and got touched, that’s how those rivalries end one way or another he just didn’t do anything to protect himself the way a cop would need to to survive this type of war. Those are just my thoughts on Andre tho. I was really more triggered by what you said about Kevin and Mel, I was like “damn this nigga can’t win for losing” lol

Because it's F Franklin over here. Jk. I knew I was biased, but I honestly didn't realize that I was coming across SUPER biased like that. However, if I just called Andre "the cop who watched him get choked out" (I have to be careful when I watch that episode btw) would be biased too. I knew that disliking Franklin was unpopular, so I tried to lay out all of the legitimate reasons why I dislike him so that I don't just sound like a contrarian, but people still got hella made at me about it lol. I'll definitely try to lay out both sides in any future videos. Idk I'm just not very sympathetic to Franklin, at least not compared to all of the people around him. Based on the trailer for the new season, I'ma dislike him even more soon. He has a Pimp Juice vibe in the trailer lol

Hmmm… I have to disagree. I never saw ManBoy as a good dude. Maybe a good street dude but hey it’s the game he’s in. I’ll say he did make for a good rival for Franklin. From his introduction, I slowly saw him lose that “good guy” image. Not to mention he was only a business connection to Franklin, not a friend like Leon. If anything, this video should be why Skully’s a good guy. When we see ManBoy and the crips drive off from The Bottoms, I got the impression that he shot the place unprovoked. Which in turn, provokes the Bloods to retaliate, prompting the start of the gang war. Even his body language when Franklin shows up after the funeral suggests it. Even after his niece’s death, his dialogue with Khadijah showed more than was needed. I think he used that as an opportunity to force Franklin’s hand with Leon. Keep in mind, he wasn’t on good terms with Skully and family at that moment. Had Franklin gave Leon to him, it would left a big wound in Franklin’s camp. While I don’t think Skully’s daughter deserved to die, I also don’t think her uncle really cared about her death, at least not outside of business reasons. Franklin did play it well, keeping a close eye on ManBoy. I will say this, the only thing terrifying about ManBoy is what he says to the group before he gets whacked. It provides some foreshadowing of events to come. Regardless, I enjoyed Melvin Gregg’s portrayal of him.

Manboy isn’t the good guy. Alton and Andre were and they’re dead. Manboy is just as bad as Franklin, but not as smart. He’s opportunistic and conniving and thinks he’s a genius, which ultimately becomes his downfall. I’m waiting to see how this all ends. As we all know there are no real winners in the situation aside from the CIA, and as much as I love the show and finally the showings of a black organized crime family done well, I don’t like how well it’s written for us to empathize and want Franklin to win at the cost of what crack truly did to our communities. In the show, Franklin is a puppet who sees his strings but thinks he can break free. Manboy is a puppet/pawn that could never understand his place on the chessboard.
@JaneforShort
@JaneforShort 2 года назад
Interesting critique. I do agree that the show wants us to sympathize with Franklin. I think the writers make it clear that Franklin is the main villain (the CIA too, but we're talking about Franklin), but humanize him just enough. I think the majority of fans see Franklin's power and admire him for it, despite what he did/does to get it, which is why I gotta go to war in these comments lol. I said what I said about Manboy, but you raise some incredibly fair points.

Manboy gave up his own man to franklin, he’s way worse than franklin. All Manboy did was abuse and use women to get at Franklin. (IE Wanda,Khadija ,& Tanosse) Manboy also started a war with his sisters husband. I don’t see how manboy could be a good guy 😂😂 he was a conniving snake just like Louie
@JaneforShort

He's the good guy because Franklin's worse. Franklin has killed two childhood friends, pistol whipped his own father, put a hit out on his aunt, etc. It's funny that you talk about Manboy using women and then call Louie a snake LOL. Franklin quit and Reed (aka the CIA) put Louie in charge. Was she supposed to say no and lose everything she worked for like Franklin did? Was she supposed to say no and risk disappearing like Alton? All in the name of LOYALTY? That doesn't even sound right big bro.

@@JaneforShort you forgot to mentioned reed went behind his back and forced franklin to quit. Kevin betrayed Franklin multiple times , and gave the recipe away to the Mexicans. Rob was a total liability, you think Manboy wouldn’t have done the same? he gave up his own man to Franklin and driver didn’t even do anything
@JaneforShort
@JaneforShort Год назад
I didn't forget to mention anything lol. Reed made Franklin quit and chose Louie to continue things, so how is Louie a snake considering what Reed is capable of? How come Franklin waited until he was in the middle of a park holding a gun to stop Kevin and didn't whoop his ass at the house? Manboy knew what kind of person Franklin was and gave his driver up as a sign of good faith. I wouldn't mind the fact that Franklin killed Rob if he wouldn't have made Rob kill his own friend right before that. What was the point of that if not for some sick sort of justice in Franklin's mind? Why didn't he have Peaches kill Rob's friend? Better yet, why didn't he do it himself? I think Manboy would have moved differently than Franklin. Manboy made it clear that he was on the side of his sister, but more than that, he was on his own side. If Franklin stopped talking about "family" for two seconds and realized that he only cares about himself, I would honestly like him more lol. He's a bad guy! And that's okay!
@slim8916
@slim8916 Год назад
@@JaneforShort Reed didn’t make Franklin quit lol. Louie sought Reed out behind Franklin’s back and made a deal w him to buy her coke from him, essentially cutting Franklin out of the business. Claudia literally mentions that Louie gets big headed and bites the hand the hand that feeds her in the very first episode, this was just a clear example of that. Franklin couldn’t whoop Kevin at the house cos Kevin wasn’t at the house, he had to find out where Kevin was from the Mexican girl, and then he went there. He also specified that he didn’t shoot Kevin to kill him, hence why he said he shot him in the leg and was so surprised when Kevin died, cos most folks don’t know there’s an artery there and you can bleed out and die if shot there. Franklin made Rob kill his friend so that the police wouldn’t even know Franklin was there if things went wrong. If the police find the bodies and weapon, it will have Ron’s fingerprints and they’ll think that Rob killed his friend then killed himself or something. Your analysis videos are good but you omit details to lead a narrative and often come from a place of bias when discussing Franklin. Keep going, these are good.
@JaneforShort
@JaneforShort Год назад
I meant to put "made Franklin quit" in quotes. One of those "using your own logic against you" things, but I didn't do it right LOL. I'm still confused as to how Louie's in the wrong. Getting business through Franklin cut into their profit margins, plus Louie asked Franklin first. Reed got in Franklin's head and he went back to Louie talking trash lol. Also, Claudia was extremely nasty to Louie, which is what lead to their fight and Louie leaving/killing her. I really don't see this as Louie betraying Franklin because she made her intention to separate from him in order to retain as much money as possible clear. Dude, I completely forgot the order of events with the Kevin thing, but I still stand by my belief that if Franklin wanted to find an alternative, he could have. He seemed to be able to think and scheme his way out of everything else. That reasoning doesn't add up to me. He still killed Rob with his own gun. The only difference is that Franklin killed one person, instead of two. Rob's head still has Franklin's bullet in it, unless I'm forgetting something. I'm glad you think my videos are good, I appreciate that. But I don't omit things to lead on a certain narrative, RU-vid doesn't pay me enough to do that (they don't pay me at all). I take notes on things that I think are interesting and then I draw conclusions. I usually rewatch afterward to see if I missed anything and sometimes things fall through the cracks. I'm biased when it comes to Franklin because I don't like him lol, but I'll give credit where it's due. My discussion of the Bodies scene from season 5 is proof of that. In that scene, Franklin finally confronts his confliction over his past actions. I know Franklin being ruthless is part of the story, but I do think he's the villain until season six and he makes a tangible change or gets bodied 🤷🏾‍♀️ Thanks for commenting!
