a wicked little spin on the original. that being said, the original is STILL worth watching....Frank Sinatra does some truely incredible work in it. it's also facinating that in the remake, the mother is just another cog in the machine...wheras in the orginal, she started out a deep cover agent for the Chineese..but she says point blank she fully intends to burn them ALL for what they did to her and her son..before continuing to use him as a brainwashed assassin. in THAT movie, Marco isn't programmed as an assassin, and he manages to "break the linkages" of the commands implanted in Shaw..but underestimates the mental breakdown Shaw is undergoing...Shaw winds up killing his mother and her catspaw husband, then himself, as he simply can't live with what he's done. the epilogue, where Sinatra as marco is explaining the acts of valor for the medal that Shaw was ararded, and how he breaks down in the end when describing Shaw in those terms...i keep BOTH movies in my video library.

Frank Sinatra in the lead, Angela Lansbury as the evil mother...the political setting of the original was COMPLETELY different of course..the "bad guys" running the program were the Chineese via the Korean war..Shaw's mother was a sleeper agent whose second husband is a Senator that loves to preach Joe McCarthy-esque red-scare propaganda and has the brainpower of Joe Biden. As mentioned above, the mother is NOT amused that the communist party brain-raped her son...but that doesn't stop her from using him in a plot to kill her husband's running mate so her HUSBAND can get elected to the white house. It's important to mention that although Marco(sinatra) WAS brainwashed too...tech back then was not NEARLY as advanced so you couldn't just hand someone a cell phone and activate thier trigger. Though i suppose one could make an argument that it was an oversight not to make better use of marco, who was still in Army Intelligence..then again the Army was onto the plot from the time they realized both marko and the other surviving soldier from the platoon had the exact same dream of the exact same communist leaders and said the EXACT same thing when questioned about Shaw.
