I've said it before on here and say it again: She's beautiful and makes that violin CRY for the loss (in the song). His voice is grounded in the earth and soil, and mourns his loss (in the song) as well. I love the Dylan song, but this stands on it's own as greatness.
Full lyrics as sung here: Oh, I'm sailin' away, my own true love Yes I'm sailin' away in the morning Is there something I can send you from across the sea From the place where I'll be landing? No, there's nothin' you can send me, my own true love For there's nothin' I'm wishin' to be ownin' Just to carry yourself back to me unspoiled From across that lonesome ocean Well I just thought you might want something fine Made of silver or of golden Either from the mountains of Madrid Or the coast of Barcelona Well if I had the stars of the darkest night And the diamonds from the deepest ocean Oh I'd forsake them all for your sweet kiss For that's all I'm wishin' to be ownin' Well I might be gone a long long time It is only that I'm askin' Is there something I can send you to remember me by? To make your time more easy passin' Oh, how can, how can you ask me again? For it only brings me sorrow The same thing I would want today I would want again tomorrow Oh, I got a letter on a lonesome day It was from her ship a-sailin' Saying I don't know when I'll be comin' back again It just depends on how I'm feelin' If you, my love, must think that way And I'm sure your mind is roamin' And I'm sure your thoughts are not with me But with the country where you're goin' So take heed, take heed of the western winds I'll take heed of the stormy weather And yes, there's something you can send back to me Spanish boots of Spanish leather
I was recently told by a dear friend that he has a terminal illness. He just sent me this song. How beautiful and how sad. Thank you for sending me this and for being my wonderful Roblet. I love you❤️
I thought I loved the Carolyn Hester/Nancy Griffith version from Dylans 30th Anniversary Concert...but the more I listen to this one I'm changing my mind. This is the most enjoyable.
i have watched this video many times...just realized just how much the camera work adds to the story. I would normally hate the constantly shifting site lines, making me dizzy... but that is exactly perfect for the story. The production does add a TON to this story!
I’ve been coming back to this song for awhile now. I just couldn’t help but say it, this song is a fucking masterpiece, it’s truly a blessing to be alive just to listen to something so beautiful. THANK YOU!🙏
Ill never get over these two. Theyve nestled so deeply in my heart and soul. My love and compassion for them is immense and i hope to someday let them know how much theyve changed my life
I can NOT stop listening to this MASTERPIECE...I keep running over to my computer to play it again and again and again!!! I will NEVER grow tired of listening to and singing along with this most beautiful song!!! Thank you so much, Mandolin Orange, and Audiotree for sharing...
Just about to sail away to Spain. My loved one used to sing this in folk clubs and learnt it when she was sixteen. About to learn our version of it, and if it has half the magic of Mandolin Orange, we hope to be content to love each other for another 30 years if we get the chance.
Just coming up on my own 30th anniversary married, and my wife is the travelling half of the pair. I say work for that chance every second of your life. There's nothing to beat having someone around who remembers you when you were young.
Love this version of this song. Its especially nice because, sung as a duet, you get to hear both person's melody and so you can tell what the harmony is. (If that makes sense.)
Doing a good Dylan cover is an easy way to get me to like someone. This was a truly GREAT cover though and they made it their own. Will check out more stuff from this band :D
I cannot get over how beautiful this is. I cannot. I have to return and listen again & again. These two are absolutely wonderful singing and playing together: full of feeling, depth, beautiful tone, harmony, blend is perfect. God, what a gift.
I think even Bob would say this is the best version of this song ...so pure so sweetly done simply beautiful ..the tears just kept rolling listening to this ...thank you Mandolin Orange am so glad I found you ;)
The lyrics- As I visualize her sailing away; and the companionless fellow, I realize Bob Dylan's a genius. The performers- Her whispering voice combined with his crisp voice are favorably different. Wonderful production.
Your mom must of been a very wise woman and you are blessed to have had in your life , may God bless and keep her safe , may God bless you too ❤️💯💯💯👍👍👍🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
This song makes me think of when I started driving long haul to provide for my wife and child. Words go only so far, but music like this speaks to the pain and trials of separation from your loved ones. We ultimately separated, and I've never quite forgiven myself for leaving them no matter how good my intentions may have been. It is the greatest regret of my life.
No this is not a love song 😜. He may be in love but it's long gone . It just takes some priceless lines to figure it out, Dylsn is the king of the anti love song which he invented in 1962 with Don't Think Twice 😆
I still think that it's a love song, though. Sure, it's a mournful one about a love that slipped away, but that doesn't make it any less a love song, does it? Do love songs have to be happy?
Gumper Van Lier GVL I agree with you. Of course it's a love song. the fact that somebody is trying to "resist" love does not make it an "anti-love "song." If you look at the words it's clear he 's still in love. Take heed of the western winds: He wants her to come back and that's the direction she would have to travel. I'll take heed of the stormy weather: he's bracing for his own heart ache. And the request for the boots is the crux of the song. He regrets he did not oblige her requests to bring him something. And is pondering whether it would be different had he done so. If that's not a love song, one has never been written.
Have you noticed that the girl singer sings most of the verses with closed eyes? So does the boy singer. They both seem to go from outwards to inwards while singing. Outwards is their guitar and violin playing, but inwards goes their singing. Is this not just beautiful? -- Hans Rosenthal (A.H.R.D.)
This is a fantastic version of Bob Dylan's song, as anyone else has said, but if whoever typed in the words being sung, if possible, please correct at the end where the typed words have him singing, "I'll take heed of the stormy weather." It's "Oh, take heed of the stormy weather." "I'll take heed" makes no sense, since he is telling her to take heed before he tells here to send him Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather. But thanks for posting. Sorry for nit-picking.
This is a great version of such an iconic song. But as a guitarist I'm wondering what type of thumb pick device this awesome picker is using. Look closely as it appears there is some adjunct to the standard thumb pick. Or am I seeing things that are not there. As usual. Hell i'm old as dirt so excuse me. Be kind. Love to you all. Rene
