You know why music was better back then? I know precisely why. There was no artificial, computer generated music then. Bands could perform the music live, and it sounded like the actual studio recording!!! You can't do that with this half fake, synthetic junk we have today. Awesome performance, Mandrill!!!
Demonic presence can't dwell in the instruments like they can in the synthesizers beat and sound. This is pure funk we know the source and it is not demonic.
They didn't sound like a studio recording actually thats an insult to a live performer u do different live ad libs improvisation thats what the greats do
This is among the great funk masterpieces of all time, always a thrill, and operates on its own completely unique level. It just makes you want to jump out of your skin, every time!
My father told me that I was listening to noise and asked me if I want to hear "real music". One of the best music lessons I ever had and still have to this day. Love It. They do not make music like this anymore
Every time I watch this, I realize that the people in the audience are truly amazing. because they can sat there almost motionless. I'd be trying to get on stage doing the Robot, breaking or somethin".
@@michaelgamboa593 I was about to say they inspired EWF cause they were the first to come out playing funk, rock, latin and jazz, with a killa brass section and Claude Coffee Cave was wicked on them keys
Me and a few of my homies saw Mandrill live at the Robin Hood Dell East in Philly along with WAR..hands down one of the best concerts we've witness and this was around 2000
I bought the Mandrill record with "Fencewalk" on it back in 1971. I grew up in a small farm town up north. When I first heard that deep funk line drop, It introduced me to a whole new world of music that influenced & shaped my musical style. I love playing funk, (that was how I managed to survive the disco years). Thank you Santiago for posting all these great Mandrill videos. I wanted to let you guys know you made a big difference in my life & I imagine it did to countless other musicians too
This song still blows my mind all these years later, and seeing it performed FLAWLESSLY live warms my heart even more! The amout of syncopation in the main groove is bananas! That off beat first note on bass sets off a flury of syncopation that still hurts my head trying to keep up with it. OMG!
Neftali, you have no idea what these videos mean to me. Thank you my brother!! Dude on keys has Claude Coffee Cave's riffs down to the max. Even with extensive personnel changes Mandrill is as tight as ever. That's professionalism. That's Mandrill.... Love you all my lifetime.
What can one say, that hasn't been said already....the band is just hoooot! I'm from Waterbury, CT and back in the day 1970's we were on it...plugged in and tuned into Mandrill. Thank you Neftali Santiago, and all of members of the band for sharing your talents, gifts and music! The funk was so thick, you needed a chain saw to cut through it...and that's good! Cause that's the way we love it! Again, that you...thank you....thank you! Peace & Love! John Green
As a high school kid in the mid 70`s in the Virgin Islands, most of my friends had a Mandrill, Bob Marley or Osibisa Album. It was a great period where most of us became conscious of culture. Another group with a great horn section was Tower of Power, however Fence walk is a classic. WBLS in NYC jogged my memory last week with a birthday celebration and I have listened to the music more than fifty times since. Thank You!
As a Caribbean citizen - I can so relate to your sentiments!! I was introduced to Mandrill, long before Osibisa, Tower of Power, War, and all the others who came after ... but still none can touch MANDRIL!!!
They gave you a show, live just doing what they loved, most were self taught, and you'd be surprise to know most were in college, these were some of the best bands to ever hit the stage, never forgotten where they came from best music ever
Bought the dvd years ago...still one of my favourite live music dvd:s and it came with a hand written thank you note from Ric WIlson, which was really cool! Big fan from Finland.
When I was teenager at the party and this jam started you had no choice but to start dancing , as the song climbed and the sweat poured it made no difference if your dance partner was keeping up or if you had a partner. I WHOLELY AGREE VERY UNDERRATED GROUP
i was at Ft Dupont Park on Aug 13th and Mandrill KILLED IT. the entire show was classic.everyone was grooving and on their feet dancing (including your's truly). what was incredible was how well they played after all these years and how closely they sounded like the original recording. What a show. What a concert. What a band. Mandrill; quintessential funk.
Uhhh...these cats are FF of funk period! This was 1970. This hit was a monster. The drum beat was “must learn” for anybody playing drums then. This set the stage for much to come. Especially that drum beat
I was first 13 years old when I heard you guys. I was introduced to mandrill at the same time as the band War. The music of mandrill still plays today and is current with listening pleasure today. In other words, your music was way ahead of its time. God bless you mandrill !!
one of the baddest in all the land first saw them in 73 Mandrill ,Funkedelic,Osibisa, Bloodstone my first conert blew the doors of seen these guys 5 times alamost a pilgrimage lol killer musicianship the Wilson brothers yes .
I used to love playing this song live we had a four piece horn section and a tight rythym section and we would kill it, Mandrill I saw them play this song in Cincinnati and they were sick!!!!
Mandrill had the funk no substitute for them!!! Love it!! Steve Washington and the Williams Brothers in the hometown on the weekend used to do Mandrill and do it well LIVE!! we were all still in High School then but funking!!!!
They definitely got my vote, when I was in H.S. we used to rock out listening to Mandrill going through the motions as if we were actually playing, I never missed a beat. This was the s..t back in the day. Never got the recognition they deserved. "Damn Shame"
I literally just discovered this band on a live music station on Spotify! I absolutely love them! The live stuff is way better than the recorded version of this. Y’all rock!
I used to visit Queens , New York every summer from Wilmington, Delaware,,,thats where I learned how to do the Fencewalk,,,,bought it back to Delaware, and we partied.
One of the first bass lines I ever learned. My cousin brought a Mandrill album home from college and hip me to it. I was a Fudgie Kae fan from the first bar. He is the "Reason I Sing"..... Peace!
I am from this time and this performance is as fierce and original as the album , god bless you brothers this is the path that artist and musicians has payed that can be but not always associated with the present. Good fuckin job of showing how it was and is done.
My favorite band in the 70s! They came to the US Virgin Islands, with a local band from my neighborhood opening for them. I had a ball as a “high” school kid, if you know what I mean! Stay up!
