I just watched this whole 43 minutes long video and it honestly felt like 10 minutes max. I was so invested i totally lost track of time. Such an interesting and well made review!
@@sammywilliam8156I too am hoping he wasn't hit by a bus. He's supposed to be in school, but it's been over a year since he's been heard from as far as I know. Maybe he just moved on from RU-vid. Wouldn't be the first.
Not sure why I said 22 shirt instead of 44, weird mistake to make, I blame sleep deprivation Edit : I know a tarantula hawk wasp is a thing, they do not have an hallucinogenic sting though hence the “fantastical creature remark” Edit: Gnosticism is a very, very varied collections of beliefs. The views expressed in the anaylisis in the first bit are classical Sethian-adjacent views, mostly.
Hey man, as a Gnostic, I appreciated the analysis, was nice to see someone in the wild talk about old Gnostic beliefs. Tho note, anyone reading this, Gnosticism is a very, *very* varied collections of beliefs. The views expressed in the anaylisis in the first bit are classical Sethian-adjacent views, mostly.
To correct that for you, I hope you don’t mind but I added the last part of your comment to my pinned comment just to make sure its seen properly, and I must admit I was expecting you say I was talking complete bolllocks so I’m glad you didnt.
"The Secret of Steel has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn this riddle, learn its discipline. For no one, no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts... 🗡 *This* you can trust."
I've seen several reviews for this movie and must say that this is the most comprehensive one of them all. You have once again proven why you're my favorite, you consistently find the most easter eggs and provide the most pertinent meanings to rather obscure references thus giving me greater appreciation for what the director was aiming for. I wish you'd upload more but I'd rather have quality over quantity any day. Thank you.
I’m sure I’ve said more than once in your channel, but your reviews are unlike any other. Your explanation , details and research on a film shows how dedicated you are in reviewing a film. I learn something new, from the film without needing to watch the film. I have seen every review and keep rewatching them because they’re so good and your voice is so calming that I sometimes put on your channel to help me sleep. Please keep up the amazing work.
@@tylerskiss Sorry I meant Dark Encounter (2019). I strongly suggest you watch it. It has a scifi UFO theme around it but watch it. Also I loved Bone Tomahawk. The violence though... gosh
"I'm your god now" Is also a Machinehead song from their first album about drug addiction and self debasement. Since they reference Celtic Frost, it might be a heavy metal thing.
That " _Happy face_ " terrified me. I expected a jump scare so I closed my eyes really hard. As for Joseph Cambell... *EVERY MOVIE AND GAME AND STORY FITS THAT HERO'S JOURNEY!* That's the whole point of it! Hell it even fits your life in the real world.
Awesome and well researched breakdown. Makes me want to watch Mandy again with new eyes! Color Out of Space next? I mean, Full on Lovecraft AND full on Cage!!?
Oh hell yeah! I feel like I do a binge of your backlog almost everytime right before you make a new video haha. Hope you're keeping safe! Love from Canada
This is a perfect example of a review which actually adds to the experience of the film itself. The review is not about the reviewer trying to be entertaining for views. It is a deep dive that explores the work in depth. DD celebrates the art of the film and in doing so causes the audience to experience the art in a new way. All of this is to say...why the hell does this guy not have more subs?!
It's been a while but you came back strong with Mandy. After seeing Mandy for the 1st time, I immediately bought it and his first film Beyond the Black Rainbow. I would love to see you cover that as well! Can't wait to see what he creates next.
This is one of my favorite movies. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched this review, it’s so good! I love how much research you do for these movies, it’s really fascinating and it’s made me appreciate this movie even more than I already do. I just wanted to say I really love your work 💖
something really interesting is how this is set up as two separate horror movies. the first movie is the antagonist victory, the second is the protagonist victory.
A great review of a great film. Just as another side note to the horn of Abraxas, in several prison interviews Charles Manson talks at length about the influence that Abraxas has had in his life.
I admittedly I didn’t delve into the cults significance enough in the video and I’m not surprised that Manson knew about abraxxas, But the man was a manipulative psychopathic con man who was a lot less crazy then he liked to pretend and I’d rather not perpetuated the myth that he did what he did for ritualistic and occult purposes, racism was his motivation plain and simple
Great film! Had a really good experience seeing it in the theatre. Keep up the fantastic reviews. Love your style. (got The Beast hanging on my wall also)
I got a notification when you originally uploaded this, as I hadn't seen mandy at the time, I took your advice and I closed the video. Fast forward 2 years, I've just finished watching the movie tonight! And now I'm finally gonna tuck into this episode 😊 When I found your channel back then, I was I bad place (you probably hear this regularly) but your videos really helped me through that rough patch! and every now and again I'll come back and rewatch your videos, there like a comfort zone for me. Thanks Deus, keep doing your thing ❤
This is one of your best reviews! I love the movie and I think this is a great tribute to it. I love the references to the Heroes Journey and Joseph Campbell!
That movie reall was a ride. Thank you for reviewing it. Personally I saw the Cheddar Goblin commercial as a sign of the "uncaring Universe" where the most terrible and soul shattering things can happen to you and the radio still plays an mindless upbeat song when you drag yourself back home. Kind of a Symbol that the "real world" doesnt care what happened to him and its something he has to deal with all on his own as is his trouble with the law. For the Crossbow bit, I understood it this way: Red is (or was) a poacher, having hidden the crossbow with his friend so it wont be found by the cops. That would also explain the way the Police acts toward him. Also serves the purpose why he cant (or wont) go to the Sherrif to report the crime and plays into Mandy telling him about her Father killing young birds.
Really glad to see you're still making content bud! When all of this mess is over, I'm signing up for your patreon. You've literally given me hundreds of hours of entertainment. I have a physically demanding job, but listening to your reviews makes my days go by so much faster! Even more awesome seeing a review for Mandy! Cheers from America! Stay safe!
I've watched this review of yours so many times. I loved this movie, and I'm really glad you got to set down and break all this down for us. I've been showing some of my friends your channel, and tell them to start with this one. Especially because I think it shows your approach to how you review, very spectacularly.
I need to get my hands on this. Every review is just like... ordering me to. And this was so well done. Your attention to detail and symbolism was mind blowing and went WAY beyond pretty much any other reviewer.
Having spoken with him directly, Panos is HUGELY influenced by the ingestion of psychedelics (his first film, Beyond the Black Rainbow, which is stunning, shows this as well), and he was hugely influenced by the 70's acid horror movie, Blue Sunshine. Guy is living in the year 3000 while we are all stuck in 2020.
another thing kinda interesting, since I didn't know anything about Abraxas and the Archons, So I just knew about the basic roman/greek planetary namesakes. Jupiter's greek equivalent is Zeus, typically the Ruler of the other Gods in the pantheon. Saturn (greek equivalent Cronus) is a Titan known for devouring his children (including Zeus, that scary painting of a gangly huge old man eating a person, _Saturn Devouring His Son_) and eventually being overpowered by Zeus and thrown into tartarus. Red picked a Titan that eats Gods, but then changes his answer to Galactus, a mortal man that transformed into a cosmic entity that eats Planets.
The black skulls remind me a lot like the Cenobites. And I do not think that was an accident as they share many similarities, and not just in appearance.
I have an idea why they didn't put the scar on Mandy in the animated sequence. Red saw Mandy as his perfect piece in life, you now, a hard-working, recovering alcoholic with only one thing to live for. It makes sense, for me, with the rest of the movie and why, with Red's every action the visualisation of the movie changes. Red lost his ideal, one piece of normality, and his world, his mind swiftly changes.
I was fortunate to see this in the theater for a one night only screening. It’s one of the funnest times I’ve ever had at a movie. The whole audience was film fans, and everyone was invested in the film.
Thanks! I enjoy watching your vids cos of the insights into trivia and lore etc. While I find some analysis to be reaching, at least yours comes with backing and explanations. Keep it up!
I just saw this movie for the first time recently because of this review and my opinion is.....HOLY SHIT DID I LOVE IT!!! My god it hypnotized me from start to finish. So difficult to avert my eyes from the screen. I didn't even want to blink. The music, the story, the colors, the acting...It's almost perfect. My favorite movie of all time is Braveheart, but since I saw Mandy it's now tied. Normally, I would say that I desire more to see, but this film deserves the honor of standing alone. It doesn't need a sequel.
I find this review to be on your top videos, it really feels like you're passionate about the movie itself rather than just making content. This and Conan are my fave reviews
Have to thank you for this one. I took your advice in the beginning and watched it first. Took me a little to get into it but this was an excellent film and great review.
The atmosphere and lore of Mandy reminds me of Hobo with a Shotgun mixed with Heavy Metal and The Road Warrior. And I f#*&ing love it! Thank you so much for introducing me to it, Deus! I have to see this!
Hi Deusdaecon. I'm glad you reviewed this film. It's one of my favourite nick cage performances. I'm a massive fan of 80's and loved the soundtrack on this film. The music and the visuals keep you drawn in. Could you review his first movie beyond the black rainbow and color out of space?. Thanks for the review, keep well and safe. Cheers
Please more reviews!!!!!!! I just binged watched every video and truly think d.d. is one of the best critics! How much do we need to give to support???
@@deusdeaconReviews be happy to support on patreon.. and just to toss out, I really hope "color out of space" is on the short list. Even if you don't get to movies I'd like to see I'm still happy to support since you do such good work!
It's great to see you back doing what you do best. You are one of the best movie anylists on RU-vid and your choice in subject matter catters perfectly to my taste. I would love to hear your breakdown of The Lighthouse. It has many underlying meanings and a rich foundation in fokelore for you to dive into. Well done and keep it up.
It was interesting seeing a hero's journey table-full disclosure, I am nearly 60, so not the average person here perhaps. Waaaay back in High School (Secondary for you I believe) i had a fantasy literature writing class and we had to write short pieces covering just that. Good to see it again...thanks. Never even knew this movie was a thing.
Seriously your library of reviews is one of the best. Wondering if you will do the directors first film. That one might be a bit more hard to read since he seemed to be working out the expressions more so than this one.
I loved Mandy and it would be cool to see you do a long from video like this for the Lighthouse. I think that movie has a lot of cool things you could talk about.
Love this movie, fantastic take! I got the impression that sister lucy was brother swan's daughter, based on subtle interactions between the two, and swan's reaction when sand requests him to send him Lucy in the motel
