We had the chance to visit the amazing home of Julian Sprung. It was an incredible opportunity as very few have ever stepped foot in the home of the OG of reefing! As we walked up to the front door, it was clear why he has his reputation in the hobby. You are welcomed by a spectacular in-ground lagoon with a large mangrove tree. Once inside, you can't miss the L-shaped planted tank. Just beyond that is a beautiful 250 gallon aquarium packed with corals. After enjoying some home-grown mangos, Julian showed us his mangrove collection in the back. Check out Julian's website below:

What a precious video! Julian Sprung is truly an important man of the reef aquarium world, and his humility seems limitless! I don’t count the nights I spent reading these books, many years ago. It highlights one very important thing: time, long time! Presenting super aquariums, super equipped, that have only a few years of life is not the same thing than an aquarium that’s decades old and filled with beautiful colonies that were originally small fragments . Julian is certainly a man of great patience and serenity, and its contribution to the knowledge of this fascinating world will remain for a very long time. Thank you!

It's awesome to see that Julian applies bonsai techniques to keeping his mangroves. I just learned that red mangroves don't export salt through the leaves from this video, always thought that all mangroves exported salt through the leaves,now I know and maybe I'll try one in one of my freshwater setups to see how it does.

Hi Julian, you need to cut below a node for a cutting (do a second cut), by cutting above the node you introduce a disease vector to the cutting (hence why they always shrivel up and die, generally from a bacterial infection). Try cutting below the node and place the cutting in a Grodan Rockwool cube and leave in fresh saltwater, it should produce new fine root growth from the bottom of the cube after a few weeks. No need for cutting powder.
@juliansprung5799
@juliansprung5799 2 года назад
I will give that a try-- it would definitely NOT work with saltwater, but if you are right about the position of the cut, it might work in freshwater. Fingers crossed, thank you for the suggestion! Julian

I am trying to get back into the reef hobby after awhile of absence and I only have one of my 125 gallon reef tanks in pieces in my home in Las Vegas. Well I am super happy to see the natural way of reef tanks nowadays. I was into that long ago but experimenting. Back then I took down my original 125 gallon that had an overflow box etc and miracle mud sump with macro algae that died the macro algae anyway and replaced with a tank identical but plumbed with a sump with NO SKIMMER and two very high volume IWAKI pumps many times more than required for that tank as rated and a UV in line sterilizer, but the key different was no SKIMMER, hundreds of pounds of live rock, and NO WATER CHANGES FOR 10 YEARS JUST ADDING WATER TO REPLACE THE EVAPORATED WATER BASICALLY! I had most of corrals thrive and fish were healthy overly stocked too in a big way used to have like 50-70 fish in addition to corals at any given time in addition to invertebrates of course. The 9th year they started to die and 10th the last huge blue hippo tang (I had 15 originally) and the Red Sea purple tang with yellow tang died lol. All I did was add tap water and some salt a handful once in awhile and squirt of ca and mg and strontium occasionally. It rocked. So now I see people are thinking like you have been doing for years like the biologist in all of us are excited :) Julliane is The Godfather of reef tanks :)

I absolutely adore this concept, though I live to far north to capitalize on an out door system. His "pond" is quite pretty. Mangroves just feels like a natural extension and progression of a reefing hobby. I'm happy to see both mangroves and macro displays gaining popularity. While I have no intention of putting a tree in my reef, I have seriously considered plumbing a shallow second tank off my sump for that very purpose. Perhaps giving a space for other species like decorative algae, sea grass, or aggressive soft corals like GSP to grow near the tree roots?
@WorldWideCorals

That's a great idea...similar to Julian's smaller mangrove tank that's plumed into his large reef.

Mangrove like Shallow water reef tank =) In fact what would be good, but would have to have the space to do so, would be to create a small beach on one side of the tank which slopes gently towards a greater depth to recreate the initial environment. On the other hand, I did not know this difference between the black mangrove and the green mangrove, thank you =) Life is a cool thing , we are able to learn every day . In fact, if I understand correctly, the Green Mangrove is a Brackish Water Mangrove and the Black Mangrove is a water Mangrove more strongly adapted to exclusively salt water, is that right ?
