Manhattan Project by @rush, off their Power Windows album, has the distinction of being the very first Rush song I listened to. Almost 20 years ago, a friend of mine sent me the song and raved about how the lyrics objectively told the story of the Manhattan Project without any cliched proselytizing. Little did I know that it would be this song that would serve as the starting point of my musical journey, because it was Geddy Lee's astonishing bass playing, Neil Peart's well researched lyricism and thunderous drumming, and Alex Lifeson's rich guitar textures that inspired me to get into music.
I originally released this cover, which was intended as a modernized, less 80s version of the original, in my 2019 album The Examination (link below). Now that Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has swept the Oscars, I was inspired to substantially upgrade it with the new tools and learnings I've gained over the past five years. Aside from a much improved mix and master, the two primary new additions were live drums courtesy of Tau, who found the drum parts significantly challenging to play, and a re-recorded bass that was done with my Spector Coda. The previous version of this cover was done with my Zon Sonus, but for this revised edition, I really wanted to capture the gut-busting growl of Geddy's Jazz Bass, which blew my socks off when I saw him perform the song during 2012's Clockwork Angels tour.
It's not held in the same regard as the likes of Tom Sawyer, 2112, or The Spirit of Radio, but as someone who loves music that lets me visualize a story in my head, Manhattan Project is right up there in my book as the greatest of Rush songs, and I hope this rendition reflects my affinity for it.
