Ilaiyaraja and Rahman...both are Genius' on their own. They are poles apart! Raaja made sure the south stopped listening to Hindi songs in the 80's. Rahman made sure the north started listening to Tamil songs in the 90's
I remember, in a small town in North Malabar, a cassette shop ran Roja's tracks while we come out of schools in the evening. The music was disruptive, and it stood the test of time. Even now we celebrate it.
ARR should be next in the list of Bharat Ratna, not just because of music, he is a gentleman , humble. He put India on world made the rest of the globe look at India. I am sure there might be multiple deserving candidates, but i will be happy if I see ARR gets it. I still remember I bought my fist tv in 2009 only to see ARR getting Oscar. Even after a decade, he is still a down to earth person. Many people made centuries but Sachin's century is special. Many make music but ARR music is unique.
I remember Jeans tamil album and that cassette cover ( it was a wrapped up in Jeans wallet oh course it’s Shankar ) and everyone at our house used to listen to that master piece every day ( 2 sides completely ) in a Panasonic tape recorder Rahman Ji has given me so many memories in life I grew up listening to him and still growing !!
In Tamil cinema Ilayaraja sir's and Rahman sir's period was when music had a greater influence on the audience. Both gave us completely different renditions which remain and will remain classics for ever in our hearts. I feel so blessed to have grown up with their music and will continue cherishing it forever🙂👍🏻
@@ashokraja5863 Ilaiyaraja is like a bright Sun. There are some other stars too on the music horizon. Raja is an inspiration to all and others have contributed too to our popular film music.
AR Rahman brought new & different sound of music, technicians & music assistance got recognisation.. NO doubt Ilayaraja sir is genious his songs & BGM in maniratnam's films is awsum & topnotch..
I hear stories of Mr. A.R Rahman from my dear friend Mr. Sheraz Uppal about how they became friends and how Rahman helped him in his journey, he talked about his honesty, discipline and ideology which I really admire. Thanks to Umesh for doing this series because I always wanted to know more about him.
I am not sure about this, but I think Rahman did the music of Garden Vareli saris at some point and he used the same thing for the initial flute music that happens in Kaadhal Rojave (Roja jaaneman). I remember making this association when Roja was first released.
Wow, having listened to ARR since childhood, walking to the school bus stop hearing strains from Roja and Gentleman...it's great to go down memory lane...
AR Rahman's biggest contribution to Indian Film Industry , overall Mumbai & South, is not only his brilliant music bot also introduction of so many singers ..some were established but more were new.
I will choose this way... If am going to be lively, will play AR. But if I am down, lonely, needs healing, want to get inspired, wants to sleep, or venturing a long drive, then of course Raja and only Raja

Raajaa has baffled western composers when he wrote the score for the symphony to be played at Royal philharmonic...

There is a great man who makes everyone feel small. There is also another great man who makes everyone feel great. Musicians who worked with AR always felt great.
Both are genius, but raja sir compositions are not to be confined only with flims , but represents world class music which touch beyond boundaries & language
@@ltr1745the real reason was Rahman came up when India was opening up to the world but Rajas era was when you have to wait for months to get a HMT watch. But in terms of work quality, Raja is truly accomplished and multi dimensional.

Very true. Raja sir is incomparable. Rahman can never be equated to Raja Sir. See the success rate. Raja Sir's music is in general an emotional product living at the heart.
ARR created a revolution in the industry..made every one thnk how to improve their own music. Cuz it was slow and old which was stuck for years. He gave a push and made the world look at Indian music. Der was Neva a song like maa tujeh salam before and won't come in the future until someone else comes up with another revolution in d music world.

It takes ARR to captivate your heart, it takes Ilaiyaraja to break your heart and kill you with his haunting melodies especially if you are a native speaker of Tamil language.
I'm very much surprised how Rehman became such a celebrity. His music is like 'Avengers' translated into regional languages. When Indian music had a uniques style, he brought 'western' as it is..! He didn't wish to become a music director.. just wanted to make some albums. That's what he's done.
