Two different legends, two different methodologies, two different approach and two different experience of music... one common man, Mani Ratnam!

He is the oly man in Indian film diaspora fit to talk about IR and AR..

For Ilayaraja he never dose music.. instead music happens to him.. he's the only living legend who writes the music. He's appreciated by those people who are instrumental players. His Chords, bass notations, strings are unimaginable. Rahman sir.. nobody can use technology like him in the music.

The only film director who is really outspoken and to the technicality. Raja sir is the musical treasure and it just flows like a river and only few in Indian cinema have tasted a handful of water, yet we can see the river is flowing through his speeches

I learn different dimension of musical usage in a movie today!! Mani sir legendary for a reason

As much as i have been able to understand about musical styles of ilayaraja and a r rahman, i have realized that the key difference is in their interpretation or approach to music. Ilayaraja's interpretation and approach comes from a world of western classical fused with tamil folk with a blend of naushad, msv and other stalwarts and he wont let himself abandon that realm ever. He is to this day, an unmatched genius in that world. Rahman's interpretation shifts with different albums and films. He can pull pieces of great music from different genres as the theme of the film or situation in the film demands. He wont stick to western classical alone. He tries to break convention with every song or music piece. So, i think ilayaraja in the world of western classical music is in league with mozarts bachs and beethovens and that shows in his mastery of bgms But rahman is someone who has broadened the horizon of possibilities with his maverick style. Rahman is thus a better option for music directors as he brings more to the table in terms of novelty. He will not stand obstinate over getting approved his musical composition against the will of the director. He knows he has other places and ways to interpret or approach it from. So, ilayaraja suits more to the process of musicmaking and composing as beethoven or mozart: unrestrained by film situations or scripts after a period of time. It suits him more to just compose without having to worry about other ways music can be approached from. Rahman is purely a film composer who will re design an emotion by approaching its musical expression from different angles and possibilities. Yet both have been masters in their own ways.

Also credit goes to Mani Sir. His scenes got the best of these 2 legends....Especially Ilaiyaraja gets inspired a lot from the scene of the film. One example is this - IR has special affinity for Vamsi (ladies Tailor etc) mainly for Vamsi's taking....

Excellent interview from a good movie director sharing his working experiences with IR and ARR. IR's music knowledge and skills are endurable and he is the music encyclopedia. The only MD who has composed variety of music genres. He is the "SHIFU" of indian music. ARR is arguably the finest music programmer and sound engineer. ARR had worked with H.Sridhar known for his prowess on high quality audio recordings. Both of them worked in state of art music recording studio which was a masterpiece. IR and ARR comparison is not apple to apple. Lets appreciate both of them. Both are India's pride.

To all fans out there, why would you want to compare IR and ARR? It's known fact that both are genius. Take pride that we have had these gems in our land. Even if you do not tend to like music of one, please have some courtesy to respect and acknowledge their genius.

One thing is clear once again. As explained by Mani and well known around - with Raja the music flows when he turns the switch in his mind to compose - song goes out of the studio - output is NATURAL. Most of the times it turned out to be the perfect music for the film and resulted in mostly hits. With Rahman, in one word if we were to put it - output is MANUFACTURED. Depending upon how well it is manufactured can it result into beautiful. In my understanding, Mani-Rahman didn't produce as many hits as Mani-Raja combination from music and film perspective. Goes without saying we are always amazed by the NATURAL things and NATURAL is most beautiful as compared to MANUFACTURED. Usually we more appreciate NATURAL things when people mature with age.

But finally I would like to say IR is the king of BGM....no body can come near him...my opinion though

Dear genius Don't compare IR with ARR Bcoz two different styles of musicians. ARR is indians pride. IR is music's pride.

Mani Ratnam worked closely with AR and IR .....He is the correct person to judge. He reveled that "ILAYARAAJA IS THE KING OF MUSIC"

Two years taken for composition of music for single movie. But Raja sir done numerous marvelous job and make all the songs hit. Don't compare the born genius with others.

Mani ratnam's earlier films were low budget films & become blockbuster becoz of Ilayaraaja sir's BGM & Songs, the same cannot b said abt mani-ARR combinations expect few films.. Who wil forget the wonderful Songs, particularly BGM of Mouna Ragam, Nayagan, Gitanjali, Anjali, Dalapati, etc..
