Awesome game choice for a J&M Monday! Bootsy really adds a lot to these episodes, I must say. I enjoy the calm, smooth attitude and subtle humor he brings to the table - really helps balance out the group and makes it twice as enjoyable to watch.
@@TheJCHarkins2 That reminds me of, how weird it is that, in many media, sharks are depicted with a horizontal tail, which means their vertibrae bend vertically, which is a mammalian feature. Sharks, being fish, have a vertical tail, and their vertibrae bend horizontally. 😆
Maniac Mansion was originally a PC game by Lucasarts (Lucasfilm games at the time) in 1987, it was a point and click game where most adventure games at the time was done using typed commands (eg. >_look at gem). Ron Gilbert, who co-wrote the game and created the SCUMM engine, went on to create the Monkey Island series...
Maniac Mansion was one of the greatest games on NES. It was way ahead of it's time. Not only was it one of the first games to feature cut-scenes, but it also featured multiple endings and a huge inventory system.
kingti85 they really sucked at playing this game, the even failed to mention day of the tentacle and original lucas people that are an important part of the history behind thins game, was originally a c64 game!
This game was a game-in-a-game for Day Of The Tentacle which also featured same characters of Dr. Fred, Bernard, Weird Ed and the tentacles. One of my favorite point and click games ever. Great stuff.
9:36 - You could still complete the game by using Bernard and call the meteor police. The multiple ways to complete the game is what makes Maniac Mansion so good :)
I got sucked into this game as a child. I'm pretty sure it took me and a friend an entire summer to finally beat it. I'd love to see an updated remake. :D
There's like 30 different ways to beat this game. That is part of it's strength but also a weakness in a way, in that a lot of items are only useful for one chain of victory conditions so somebody that doesn't know what ending they're trying to achieve might get overwhelmed by logic strings and item combinations that go 'nowhere'. Screwing up that car just closes off one way though.
I remember playing this at a kiosk at the 1990 Nintendo championship tour in Cinncinati. Had all kinds of games you could play months before their release. Was way cool .
This was one of my favorite games as a kid. My friends and I would always gather around the TV to watch one person play it and throw random ideas at him about what to do next.
It's a great game, an all time classic. But I recommend playing the PC version. It has got better graphics and it's uncut. Yes, because of Nintento they made some "changes" in the NES version.
Microwaving the hamster is the only naughty bit NoA missed when censoring MM to bits the first time around, though I believe the second run of NTSc copies had it patched out, and I know for a fact all PAL copies have it patched out. I'd recommend the PC version, ideally with an actual Roland Sound Canvas for sound, you get better graphics, better music and all the naughty bits NoA didn't want you to see.
The first time I played this game was actually in Day of the Tentacle. It was amazing how in DOTT Weird Ed went on about his hamster being blown up, and then I actually experienced that by playing the previous game in the current one and retroactively getting the joke.
SpackoEntertainment Lucas Arts wasn't closed, most of the people were layed off and all projects were cancelled. Disney needs to keep Lucas Arts to keep the IPs(Star Wars games, etc.) so I doubt they will ever close the studio down.
I LOVED this game! I probably logged more time on my NES playing this than anything else. It was just always really fun to me trying to figure out all the different things you could do. I would totally still play this if I had it around!
One of the best NES games, I remember you could do different things with all the characters, even record a tape and win a music contest. AWESOME game!!!
I love you all so much all of you guys are such cutie pattooties! I hope we can have a picnic and play video games sometime. I especially love you theneedledrop and you cyphr6, such sweethearts.
I believe I watched this years ago because it was my favorite NES game. Well its now almost 2019 and the opening song has been my phone ringtone for almost 2 years.
Maniac Mansion serves an important role in gaming history. It was one of LucasArts' first adventure games, and was the first to use its in-house game engine, SCUMM, which actually stood for "Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion". It was used in all but one of their later games, which rank among the greatest PC games ever made, including Sam and Max Hit the Road, Loom, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, and the Monkey Island series. This was an alternative to the more common kinds of text adventures, which involved typing commands, even when they started having graphics. SCUMM helped foster the advent of true point-and-click.
UberMan5000 all the games you listed particularly the monkey Island games, Sam and Max were some of my favorites. Loom was incredible. Indiana Jones was pretty good as well. I played all of them . I would give anything for these games to have modern remakes (copy of the original included would be cool too) but yes I remember seeing S.U.M.M. every time a game would start up. I must have played through monkey Island half a dozen times at least. I think my record for beating it was a few hours lol. So many memories
@@martial_matt Well all of the Monkey Island games either have gotten a remake or the remake is in the make. And a lot of the others have been made playable on modern PC's (Zak McKracken, Sam & Max Hit the Road, Full Throttle, Loom, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Day of the Tentacle etc though most of those use the remade scumm engine ScummVM I think using the original game audio & graphics data.)
Where did you get that information from?? I can think of many other games prior to Maniac Mansion that had been officially translated in different European languages, like "Cauldron" from 1985. Like Maniac Masion, it was originally released for the Commodore 64 and was likewise translated into German, French and even Spanish...
I forgot to add "console game" in my post. Anyway, it was from Wikipedia, and also, I wrote "all main European languages", which this includes Italian.
The beauty of this game is that there was more than one way to get into the front door. There was more than one to do most things. All changing the story. Such an advanced game.
This was one of the few NES games I actually owned as a kid.. we usually rented from the local video store and only owned a handful of titles. The only help we had for playing the game was a brief walkthrough from Nintendo Power magazine.
I absolutely loved this game as a kid. I actually guessed the lab code, it was one of the proudest gaming moments of my life, only because I used logic on the high score being 0000 and used that knowledge to guess the lab code. Fun game for a point and click.
This game is such a classic, it's one of my favourite nes games. It was so fun to just explore around the mansion and try to figure everything out. I remember being so shocked that you could microwave Ed's pet hamster.
James, you need to go to a store in Akihabara, Tokyo that is called Super Potato. They sell retro games. It looks like your room but it's about five stories tall. It's incredible and would make one hell of an episode!
This is, bar none, my favorite game of all time. It blew my mind when I played it as a kid... definitely redefined what a video game could be in my young mind.
+Firevine There's also a key you can find. I think you have to get the audiocassette and record the green tentacle singing(or he just gives you the tape) and then play it in the hallway with the chandilier. It makes a very high pitched noise that shatters the chandilier and there's a key to the dungeon in the wreckage.
I loved this game when i was younger. The different characters the way u had to use each character to solve different puzzles within the mansion. I always thought it was great.
Fun fact: Bernard is generally considered the fan-favorite protagonist of this game, and is the only one to appear in the sequel (and arguably as the main character, no less). So the Nerd was cool before he was cool, I guess.
Maniac Mansion was always one of my favorites. Something you guys missed though is that hitting the select button cycles through Get, Use, and Open... that makes controlling the game much easier! :)
And, the thing about that code is, it doesn't actually give you EVERYTHING. That's the code that I use as well (and I got it from the same place you did), but I remember one of the daggers (I think) was missing.
James, I would love to see your reaction to 'Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle', or 'The Secret of Monkey Island'. They are other games by this developer but are a million times better and on PC. Some of the best games ever!
The key to speed in this game is using the select button to scroll through the 3 most used verbs. So many glitches to figure out, too. For example, the way to get past Nurse Edna in her room and get up the ladder, you have to enter her room point at the top of the ladder and pick new kid as she's coming toward you. When the new kid menu comes up, she'll run right past you. Another cool trick is that if Dr. Fred doesn't play his arcade to set a high score for a dungeon door code, then the code is all zeroes. Like I said, me and a buddy figured this game out and all these tricks back in '91-92. I'd say most people just get on the internet when they get stuck at a part now. We figured all this shit out with no help back in the day. It must suck to be a kid now.
if you dont skip the intro when Dave talk, he actually tell you to look under the doormat for the key. oh, and you can use the SELECT button to switch between Get,Use and Open commands.
Not trying to spam or anything but the Maniac Mansion creators' Kickstarter project "Thimbleweed Park" ends in 3 days and imo is well worth looking into if a fan of games like Grim Fandango, Maniac Mansion, the Monkey Island franchise etc etc. I just mention this again because a lot of the Tier rewards for "Thimbleweed Park" are Kickstarter exclusives and once the kickstarter project ends that's it, no second chances to get the signed collector's edition complete box (box, manual, disc, extra bonus) or signed poster or any of that other goodness unless someone puts them up at an inflated price on ebay.
Hey no problem. I missed out on the Mighty No 9 kickstarter which everyone else seemed to know about except me lol so I know how it feels to be too late and the party's already over, so to speak lol.
what? Wow! Unfortunately, I didn't even know about Mighty No. 9, and I'm a big fan of Mega Man, too! :'( Too late now... I'll definitely be buying the game when it hits PS4, that's for sure! Well, thanks for mentioning that! :)
what? Don't forget about Humongous Entertainment! Ron Gilbert was the founder alongside Shelley Day on that when they started on Putt-Putt, but too bad Sweden only got Freddi Fish because of localization problems that didn't get anything else here.
I played this game in 1990 on my brother's old C64. I actually figured out, together with some pals, how to beat it. My way of beating it (there are several it seems) is to get to the Meteor, take it and put it in the trunk of the car in the garage. You can send the meteor to space in this car, if you didn't acidentally shot the car into space BEFORE putting the meteor in the trunk like in this video.
Hell yeah! Y'all finally did this game! I've been requesting it for a long time now. This was my favorite game as a kid. The music is bad-ass. It's got it all - rock music, horror, comedy. I was in grade school when this game came out and me and my buddy figured it out ourselves. This was back before the internet and we didn't use Nintendo Power. There are a lot of possibilities, too - which made it unlike any game from back in that day. A lot of people don't like it because it's not a game you can put in and figure out immediately. If I was there with y'all, I could show you how it's done! Ha!
You should really play the PC version of this game, either the original game running on SCUMM VM or the fan remake Maniac Mansion Deluxe. However, if you want a REALLY good Point'n'Click, try Monkey Island 1-3, Maniac Mansion 2: Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Sam & Max: Hit the Road or - if you want something more modern - the Deponia series or Edna & Harvey by Daedalic Entertainment.
