Lyrics
[Verse 1]
We live in Orwellian times
It feels impossible to pick a side
In sentences that dance and hide
The truth becomes a broken lie
[Chorus]
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
Where me and you could co-exist
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
Words wage war, meanings being missed
I'll walk you through thе apocalypse
[Verse 2]
We live in Orwеllian times
A deepening sense of fear and crime
On the playing fields, in exclusive clubs
And the people machines still making fools of us
[Chorus]
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
Where me and you could co-exist
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
Words wage war, meanings being missed
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
[Instrumental]
[Chorus]
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
I'll walk you through the apocalypse
Where me and you could co-exist
Every way you look, every way you turn
The future fights the past, the books begin to burn
Words wage war, meanings being missed
I'll walk you through the apocalypse

I think it talks about words and meanings being distorted by the mainstream media and Western govts in an Orwellian way (especially in 1984 style) in order to manufacture public consent so that oligarchs can attack and steal from the working class. Some very relevant examples are 'peace keeping' missions, interventions to 'bring democracy', 'defence' ministries of imperialist states, 1993 Independent article about Bin Laden being a 'freedom fighter', declaring juneteenth a holiday but taking no concrete action and so on.

A stalwart band who always accepted the responsibility of their societal position of influence, unlike so many others. It's hard for good people like these, who, having giving fair warning to the masses with "If You Tolerate This", to have to see their warnings largely going unheeded. So now, here we are in the foothills of full on dystopian nightmare, and the Good Knights still dutifully come forward, when few others, bar Van Morrisson, will bother for us. As a huge thb fan, I can say that I don't want anything like this anymore. It's an outstanding album in their back catalogue and let's keep it that way. I'm glad that they're not afraid of experimenting and if it's going to be a pop abba-esque record, Iet it be
@thejoin4687
@thejoin4687 3 года назад
@@this_is_ally_blyat Very much so. Viewed against their overall canon, thb is quite an atypical Manics record (not that that's a criticism of the album itself, which deserves its classic status). It was an avenue that they couldn't really go any further down, except on j4pl, but that too was in its own category. Orwellian is more in line a core Manics theme: to combine "manic street preaching" with campy pop.

Pop rock Manics will always be a treat---Lifeblood is literally my second fave album after Know Your Enemy---they're one of the few 'alternative' rock bands that never gave up their melodicism for some tired, midtempo power chords jam... but I do find myself disappointed that they never tried their hand at reggae-rock (a la Joe Strummer + mescaleros)... or metal. A shame since JDB's playing absolutely shreds.

The Holy Bible was 25 years ago and it was Richie's album, not Nikki's. They can't recreate that and they shouldn't have to, people should treasure it as a part of their past and love the band for who they are now. They are still producing great albums.

@@UlyssesSGrant-de9pn One of the greatest groups of all time. The Manics would agree and the genius of both bands is not mutually exclusive. No contradiction.

Now the Manics have been making the most zeitgeist aware music through five different decades. No small achievement but still a very underrated band. I'm nearly 40 but this band never stops to amaze me with every new release, like the did back when I was in my teens.

@@coleuk8817 I'm hoping so, going to be seeing them 3 times this year if I get tickets for the UK tour, already got tickets for the Cardiff gig and Halifax, probably try and get the Manchester tickets aswell, I was kind of hoping they would do an anniversary gig for Generation Terrorist since it's 30 years old next year

@@craigceres4473 Lucky you! I'm going to Halifax and might do Leeds or Manchester too. Suppose one blessing about the repeated postponements of the Piece Hall gig is that we'll now hopefully hear the new material that wouldn't have existed last year. Maybe they've something up their sleeves re the Generation Terrorists anniversary. Highly unlike them not to mark such occasions.

Anyone feels the connection between this song and Europa Geht Durch Mich? It's like when someone amped up to whatever unknown future they will face and having no qualms of whether they will make it or not.

I just heard this on the radio, but missed the presenter's intro, so I remembered a few words and put them into Google like this: "A WHEELIE BIN, ORWELLIAN TIMES SONG" and this came up. Here it is at 0:14 I still think there's a connection between a wheelie bin and George Orwell somehow.

I like that chorus. It's quite an unexpected shift and I like oblique changes in a song. The Doors and The Stranglers used to do it a lot, confusing your mood response with major and minor chord changes.
