Love this cover. The original version of the song was hardly sad either, really. I always liked that about it. It depicts suicide in a way that is incredibly ill-fitting, and anyone who's seen the film would actually understand the context of how that works so well.
Listening to this song brings serious tears to my eyes. How I miss the TV Show M*A*S*H. It's just too bad that we've lost Colonel Potter. I wouldn't want anyone(Not even Henry Blake) commanding the 4077th other than Sherman T. Potter! R.I.P.: Colonel Potter. You will never be forgotten.
Written by Robert Altman’s teenage son, Mike Altman, Suicide is Painless is filled with all the angst, feelings of persecution, despair, and a plethora of other self-destructive sentiments of a teenage boy, brilliantly establishing the darkly comedic tone of the Altman film in a single moment. Maybe that's why it brings a tear to the eyes of those who hear it....
the lyrics were written by a 14 year old... what does a 14 year old know about suicide? I think the band didn't misunderstand anything it's just a damn good song
Doesn't capture a single thing about suicide. More concerned with making it sound like "The Manic Street Preachers" than any emotional aspect that the original bared for the unfathomable decision of taking your own life. Thoroughly misunderstood by the band.
