Just want to thank you SO much! I’m three weeks into using oil after hand washing, Kerasol at night, and a weekly oil soak. The difference I can already see is astonishing to me. At 65, I’ve never had nice natural nails, but they now seem to be in my reach! Many thanks.

I am so happy that I have found your channel. I began getting gel manicures in February because I went on a cruise and I wanted lovely nails. After that I went every two weeks or so to get them redone. Everyone who did them used the e-file to remove the old gel polish, and after a few times, I don’t have to tell you what was happening. I asked a nail tech if there was a protective coating of something I could get so I could let the nails grow in fresh. She put builder gel on and made it very thick! Well, today I had it removed and my nails are pretty beat up. They look ragged and they are tender! I filed the free edge short and treated my dry, damaged nails and cuticles to a long hot oil soak (I used jojoba oil.) Then shea butter. They feel a lot better already.

I tend to be a little OCD with some things. Removal of dry skin around the nail being one of them. I was watching and saying out loud, “she didn’t get it all, she missed a spot!” You explained why! Thank you! Refresh the skin! Why do we exfoliate the skin on our face? To help with the absorption of lotions etc into our skin. By a gentle refreshing of skin around the nails the oils and creams should absorb better too. Thank you so much. I always learn so much from your videos!
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Год назад
Hi Robin! Thank you for your comment! Yes, exactly, we exfoliate gently to help with absorption and exfoliation helps with natural cell turnover BUT over exfoliation hurts the skin. It causes inflammation (even if you don't see it with a naked eye) and it can lead to excessive skin thickening (like callus for example is a result of pressure and friction). So we can't exfoliate dry skin away. That is part of proper skin care that has to be followed by the client if they want to have nice and healthy skin. I also prefer chemical exfoliants like BHA and AHA, they are much more gentle if used in a proper percentages. Urea at higher percentages is a great exfoliator too. thenakedchemist.com/what-is-urea-and-its-benefits-in-skincare/ Instant gratification of overfiled skin to achieve dry-less "look" or long term success: healthy skin and educated client in how they can help their own skin. I prefer the second :)

Couldn’t find the Kerasal at Sally’s beauty supply or Walmart so I mixed Vaseline with glycerine and apply at night. I did find Jojoba oil at Sally’s and apply every time my hands get wet. I’ve been using gel polish to strengthen my thin nails but the polish peels off after about 3 days. I don’t rough up my nail beds before applying gel because they are naturally thin. Applying OPI primer helps to hold gel polish but again can’t find it at Amazon, Sally’s or Walmart.

The most important ingredients in Kerasal are the 10% urea and 5% salicylic acid. I have links in the description box. It’s best to buy jojoba in bulk, meaning larger size. Way better price

Anna, i hope you can clarify something for me. I have a similar situation. My nail tech used an e-file to remove my acrylics and removed too much of my natural nail back around the end of January. After watching several of your videos back then, I thought your recommendation was to use NO polish of any kind, and to let the nails grow out until the thin part was gone. In this video you are putting base and top coat on her nails (but no color.) When should we go with nothing at all, when can we use base & top and when can we add a color layer?
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Год назад
It depends on the damage. Dazzle Dry is very gentle and the nails were so bendy and soft they hurt so DD offers some protection. I don’t recommend polish for protection as a default. Please see my todays RU-vid live where I talk about it a bit. I actually mention in several of my videos for some damage to wear clear coat of DD (base and top). It’s not necessary but in cases like this it offers some relief.

Hi Anna, this is a genuine question, this client does not seem to have any open wounds. While I understand the concept of IBX, why would a soft gel overlay not be an option? I would imagine having something over the nail nail would protect it more. Thanks in advance.
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife 7 месяцев назад
I love challenging questions. I know from experience that nothing will stick well to nails that are this thin and spongy on a client who is hard on her hands and doesn't baby her nails. I order for anything to stick I would have to do 2 things. Use a 100 or even 180 grit file. or Use a very strong chemical bonder. Many would do both. And I don't want to do either. #1. Some nails were so spongy that they were giving me goosebumps, they hurt. I can't imagine filing these nails. #2. The strong chemical bonders are very allergenic. Some have very small molecules that can penetrate such thin nail and expose the client's skin (the nail bed) and potentially cause permanent allergic reaction. I know many nail techs who used strongly bonding soft gels ending up with clients all over sudden coming back with horrible reactions like this www.patreon.com/posts/overexposure-to-80195503 I can't even imagine having a client coming back with nails like this. #3. I only choose to use hypoallergenic products. They have a gentle bond. They don't bond very well to damaged nails. CND Shellac is not for everyone. It works well for normal, healthy nails. I know for sure that this client would have peeling after couple days and that would cause even more damage. I also would use CND Shellac against their instructions. Also let's not forget. Nail enhancements are designed and proven to be safe used on normal nails that have normal thickness. I really don't believe that gels protect the nails. They for sure disguise damage, they make the nails feel stronger but they don't fix anything and they make the nails weaker underneath, not stronger. Thats like putting veneers on teeth with cavities. Sure they will look better and will look healthy but they will weaken the teeth and won't fix any problems. In many cases veneers are OK for cosmetic reasons. For people who take care of their teeth and not for people who like opening beer cans with their teeth LOL.

Hi Monica! Well, the best thing you can do to try your best. Outside of work use urea based lotion and a drop of jojoba oil around the nails after each hand wash. I also recommend Glove in a bottle. No. Dazzle Dry offers 2 things that I love. No yellowing and 5 min dry. If you use another polish between DD base and top you can still get yellowing and it will not dry in 5 min. To me it’s a waste of an expensive base and top. If I use a normal polish I would use their base and top. Ps. Here is why even though you would use DD base you can still get yellowing Chemist explains bit.ly/3QSkU2O

Thanks for replying! So far, DD is the only polish that doesn’t make my nails look worse when I remove it. Just another option. I pretty much always do dry manicures at the salon. With e-file I can be very detailed. For DIY I definitely don't recommend e-file but cuticle remover instead

Oh dear, poor lady! Her nails looked so "ouchy". This is why I would never get acrylics or even a gel manicure; the risk of nail damage is not worth it to me. She has lovely hands and beautifully shaped nails, naturally. If she can grow them out and keep them moisturized, they will be lovely.

Hi Anna! With any dryness or some weakness to the nails, I would assume that DAILY oil soaks would be good, or at least massaging a good nail oil in daily, but you say only once a week is needed. Why is that? Is over-oiling nails bad for the nails?
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Год назад
Hi FB! Once a week is more reasonable long term. You can apply some oil after each hand wash. That would be very helpful. Basically you are replacing what you washed off.

What should I use besides a e-file when doing my own manicures at home?
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Год назад
Hello, I never recommend using e-file by DIYers, it's an excellent tool if needed when used by a person who is trained using it. I have seen way too much damage using e-file. I even have hard time using it with my non dominant hand without causing damage to the nail. When the manicures are done on a regular bases (quick mani weekly) and basic skin care followed then there is not much to do Cuticle work ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d_BAnJlJ1Bs.html 3 simple habits ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8LXeYtTG8OU.html How I do my mani ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-31hzp1ERN1k.html

Do you have any thoughts about Dr Remedy and OPI base and top costs? Would they be ok to use?
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Год назад
Most of "nail strengtheners" are just marketing. There is nothing really special about them. I looked at Dr. Remedy. The ingredients look like a standard nail polish with some tiny tiny tiny amount of oil at the very end of the ingredient list. It's better to condition nails with pure oil (warm oil treatment) and then put the cheapest coat of polish for some shine if you like the look PS. The marketing behind this brand is quite over the top. It's 10 free formula lists that the polish is free of things that are never in nail polish anyway like xylene for example (it's an ingredient found in some permanent markers and not polish I don't think) and parabens (there is nothing wrong with paragons anyway but it's a preservative used in water based formulas, not nail polish) Also "animal testing" is not an ingredient. I mean I'm very glad they don't test on animals but come on. What's next, gluten free (wait, that exists already, even though we don't eat polish), free of added sugar? free of enriched uranium? free of asbestos? free of steroids? Maybe these companies should start talking about things that are in the product instead of what isn't? ingredient list: Ethyl Acetate - solvent Butyl Acetate - solvent Nitrocellulose - film forming (can be damaging to the nail plate just like any other polish) Acetyl Tributyl Citrate - plasticiser Adipic Acid / Neopentyl Glycol /Trimellitic Anhydride Copolymer - film forming Hydroxybutyric Acid/Hydroxypentanoic Acid Copolymer filler that makes the polish look nice and maybe smooth the look of the coating? Isopropyl Alcohol solvent Sucrose Acetate Isobutyrate - emulsifier (keeps the ingredients together) Stearalkonium Hectorite (thickener) Titanium Dioxide (white pigment) Tocopheryl Acetate (preservative) Iron Oxides (colourant) Yellow 5 Lake (colourant) Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) SeedOil (and) Allium Sativum (Garlic) Bulb Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil (and) Lavandula Angustifolia(Lavender) Extract Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil Biotin (are you serious?)

@@TheSalonLife quick question about your comment on biotin in nail polish. You wrote "are you serious". I was under the impression that biting was good for nails. Can you elaborate on what you mean about biotin in nail polish formulas?
@TheSalonLife
@TheSalonLife Год назад
Hi Valerie, putting microscopic amount of biotin on your nails I have a feeling has the same effect as trying to gain weight by rubbing some oils on their nails. Or trying to get drunk by rubbing some alcohol on their nails. You have to eat/drink often excessive amounts of these in order for this to happen.
@TheSalonLife

ps. Also you have to be careful with oral supplementation of biotin www.aad.org/dw/dw-insights-and-inquiries/archive/2021/biotin-supplementation-hair-nails

Exactly Tumasia! And also with clipping if you are clipping already short nails it's easy to clip the skin around the nails, the eponychium which bleeds and hurts like heck.

Hello Elisabetta! So sorry for replying this late. If your mom's skin is cracked then I would not recommend this cream. This cream is good for hard callused skin that is not broken. I would suggest cream like Bephanten. Also she should only use gentle cleansers to wash hands with so the skin is less stripped. Ciao Elisabetta!

Not really. But often the words are used interchangeable. Oil is a best strengthener, all of the other ones don't really work, or work as well as just plain nail polish just by adding layers to the nails. Hi Jule! I would try these 2 from Catrice. They are nitrocellulose free and they don't last long and they tend to peel after 2-3 days but I find they don't yellow the nails. I really don't think they have the magical qualities like they advertise but they might help the nails feel a bit less sensitive if the nails are very overfiled. www.catrice.eu/es-es/p/9335010001/nail-repair-nail-building-base-coat www.catrice.eu/es-es/p/9053070001/nail-building-base-coat I think they are the same product, just new packaging.

Hello D, Filing in 1 direction seems to be an old wives tale. I've been filing like this for 25 years and my clients don't experience peeling. Peeling is from damaged surface and not how you file. Also if you file with coarser file the finish will be rough and it can catch on things. So then either smooth the edge with a buffer block or use a fine file Here how scientist explains it 👉 FILING NAILS IN 1 DIRECTION? by Doug Schoon ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LdpvdDJ9wJI.html
