Since then I’ve been afraid to enter a salon and have relied on your channel to get my nails back to a healthy state. I had gotten into the bad habit of picking the dry skin around my nail bed, it drives my husband crazy especially when he’s driving. So I got some worry beads to keep my hands busy. Also started using vit e oil and aquaphor on my nails. I learned so many good things from you.

My proximal nail folds on my fingernails are overgrown/stretched, too. I had a terrible habit of picking my nails as a kid. Now, I'm almost 30 and trying to deal with the overgrown stuff. It's been hard because every time I search for these things, I get advice on how to correct cuticles, not the PNF. Thanks for this video, I appreciate the insight.
I can relate to the woman who sent in the pictures for this video. I applaud her bravery!!!!I have worked to quit biting my nails over many years. My nails have improved a lot to the point I felt secure enough to get manicures. But there are some nail technologists who can cause damage. That is why I am trying to keep it simple and do at home. Anna, your advice and knowledge is wonderful! I will send you a picture soon. Also, I am familiar with that sheep breed because I am a spinner, weaver/ fiber artist. Her breed is the cutest to me!! That's exactly the same reason I decided to learn doing mine at home as well! Although my nails look much better than when I was actively biting I was worried of going to a tech who would just cut off my overgrown proximal fold instead of treating it.

Thank you for this video Anna. I've been following your advice for the passed couple of weeks after years of trimming what I thought was cuticle. I have stretched skin on some of my nails which I have been gently pushing back every other day but they are dry & ragged and the urge to trim them is strong! I am resisting it though and moisturising frequently. I am already seeing improvements but have found today's video reassuring and motivating that the slow & steady approach will work given time.
Hi Julie! Yes I know it’s very difficult! Urea based cream like Karasal will help to smooth that skin. It needs time to get elastic and bounce back. The more protection you give it the softer it will get. It will happen. Be patient. Take some pictures and see the progress. It’s motivating :) If you ever want to send us the pictures we would be delighted! I love seeing people’s progress!

I recently found your channel and have to say you are a wealth of information ! I now understand the difference between the cuticle and skin around the nail. Pat B. I pick at my nails AND the skin around them, too! From my doing that for a long time, I also ended up, starting cutting my, what I thought were my cuticles but, is instead, the living skin/edge! What a terrible cycle! The nippers have become my worst enemy! I’m addicted to using them, to cut the skin on & around each & every nail on my fingers! My nails look so horrible, now! I am very, grateful that I’ve found Anna’s You Tube page!! I’m now, stopping the cutting! But, the picking of my nails is going to be tough! I must admit…!
So amazing!!! I used to have nails that looked exactly like that when I was still an active biter. I've managed to break that habit now but was still struggling to care for the overgrown skin that happened because of the biting. Your videos have been so helpful for me!!! I love that you don't advocate for just cutting them like others do, I tried that and it did not last or work well at all for me.

I bit my nails since i was 4 my nails looked just like that,it was my biggest insecurity,i would hite my hands aaalll the time. Now im 20,I stopped biting them after years of builting a habit and now i grow them long and square,they were 2 cm before i cut them this summer!I was so proud of myself!I'm growing them again now for winter Your cannel taught me a lot about nailcare and polishes I love these videos especialy❤️thank you so much for your videos
Your videos are so helpful. I have also hard and overgrown/streched skin around my nails - result of many years with wrong manicure and cutting this skin away, and now finally it starts to look better. It takes time and a lot of effort to keep them moist and oiled but it is worth it

I like using a small short-bristled brush for pushing back the skin. You can't hurt the nail with it and there is no danger of tearing the dried-out skin which often happened to me when I used instruments like pushers or sticks. I use it with a thick cream. By the way, a big thanks to Anna! I bought a urea cream and it really made a huge impact on the state of my feet. much more effective than regular moisturisers and oils

I go rock climbing a lot and this is very helpful for me. I do strike my nails on holds and surfaces often, so this is helping me with my nails while I recover from my gel nail polish allergy
How is that working for you? This is also my issue. I'm trying to keep healthy nails but they are always chipped and so dry because of the rocks and chalk. My climbing partner also has issues with his cuticles cracking pretty severely.
Im a nails tech. I have customers with that kind of bitten damaged short nails come in asking for long tips. They expect me to make it look good and last at least 3 weeks. I also have that same type of customer asking me to cut all their living skin. My explanation to why they shouldn’t do neither doesn’t matter because they are the “paying customer” and I’m suppose to deliver the impossible.
I feel you 100%. This is why I stopped doing gels. People get these things done for the wrong reasons. Our industry became very unprofessional. As a professional you should be able to determine if a client is a right candidate for the procedure or not. Doing as you are told is not professional. Expecting to be able to tell a professional to do what you want is wrong. Imagine hiring a plumber and telling him how to do his job. If they tell you installing something is dangerous or impossible you listen. This is why I think calling our industry a “service” industry is incorrect. I think it’s a bit worse in North America due to tipping. You don’t do exactly what you are told? No tip. And you can’t even question anything. I never get tips here (Spain) and I charge what I have to charge to pay for all the expenses and get paid at the end of the month. I don’t have to rely on people’s “generosity”
I recently discovered your videos and have begun a new regimen. Everything you advise for the living skin nail fold is so true. I used a V cutter for years on my “cuticles”, not understanding that I was damaging living skin. I’ve been using oil on my nails which helps a lot and in a couple of weeks I should have sufficient nail growth in order to clip off all the surface damage. I plan to start regular IBX treatments, and stop all polish forever. My question is should I continue using nail oil along with IBX or do the treatments stop the oil from absorbing? Thanks.
She may also benefit from a lanolin based heavy hand cream during the day to help her skin in general on her hands, like Cutemol, it used to need to be ordered through a pharmacy (without prescription, but it was a special order thing) but now they sell it on Amazon. That stuff will last through tons of handwashing and working with your hands. She works with sheep so probably isn't sensitive to lanolin.
I have never bite my nails, I like to keep my hands clean and use hand creams and still get this skin on my nails. Even if I push it back still short, it stans up and gets dry. On my toes is really thick, so I am cutting chunks off. My nails look kind of nice and clean, but I have to take of them ever few days, which is time consuming.
Have you tried nudging the skin back every 2 days and using the creams I recommended for 2-3 months? It is normal to have "skin on your nails". But when the skin is stretched because it's stuck it can look not so good. So the nudging will "unstick" the skin, so the skin has a chance to shrink (this takes time) and the creams will keep the skin elastic so it has the ability to shrink. This is not gonna happen over night.

Hi Susana! Thank you so much for your kind words. All polishes are safe to be used as directed. The “no toxic” trend is taking it too far. Toxicity is about amount of exposure too. Certainly some ingredients might be toxic but not when they are applied on a (dead) nail. For example. You can safely wipe your nail with 99% isopropyl alcohol but if you drink 5 litres of it, it would be a toxic amount. I really like Dazzle Dry because it’s very gentle on the nails and it doesn’t yellow the nails. The yellowing is not really “unhealthy”. It’s more of a cosmetic issue.
Found this super helpful , my nails are really looking good now, but I have noticed that my two small fingernails are starting to bend over my finger tips. Is there any thing I can do to stop this happening

Yes totally. You mean a cream containing glycolic acid? Because of course not pure glycolic acid. I would not use any acids though if there is broken skin. If they’re is broken skin just a Vaseline. When the skin heals adding acids.
Bitter varnish.its not just disgusting,the bitterness reminds you that you were not supposed to suck on your fingers.it helped me a lot but more than anything I wanted to get over myself.good luck to everyone struggling 😚💝🍀
La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Mains is a miracle product! I've been using it for years on my hands. A few years ago, I had lichen planus on my feet and ankles during summer, and it was a nightmare! I couldn't sleep from the itchiness. I couldn't wear socks or any shoes. I visited a dermatologist and we included corticosteroids, antihistamines, and gentle medical soap. However, the cream and lotion she had recommended didn't help enough with leftover scaling even though I was very disciplined and persistent. That was until I started using my La Roche-Posay hand cream every morning and night. I could see the difference in just a few days. The skin completely recovered, all the discolourations were gone. When I look at the photos, I just cannot believe how awful it looked. This cream is worth every cent. CeraVe also has similar cream (similar consistency, no smell, quick absorption), but it is not nearly as good as this one.
Do you have any advice for overgrown hyponyichium? I think i injured it with something going under the nail a few weeks ago. I keep it short but The skin underneath has extended and it hurts to cut any shorter. How can i make it recede.

Hi Maria! My sister (also nail tech) uses cuticle remover before gel application and she has good results. I honestly prefer 100% dry manicure before gel or gel polish.
I think this happens when people are mail biters. It happened to me too. But mine never stop growing. It gets dead and dry and rips. I push it back regularly but i I have to still clip the dead parts. My son and my brother have this too on their toes. Many people have an over growth of skin like this. There is no way to leave that
Yes there is totally a way to soften the skin by caring for it. I’ve seen it many many times. But yes biting hardens the skin because of the trauma and the enzymes in the saliva irritate the skin so the skin hardens in response
I am so annoyed. I have never really had nice nails but years ago I spent quite a bit of money having a professional manicure. She cut my eponychiums!!! I'd never done it. I should ask for my money back.
Why shouldn't this person cut the skin a bit off after pushing it back to start with at the beginning of the treatment to make the nails look better? - not as a long-term solution to repeat but just as a start.

Because when you cut the skin the skin is going to grow more (trying to protect itself) and it will start peeling etc. It's not a fresh start, the skin just needs time to shrink. Just like after pregnancy belly is not going to look flat right away. It takes time. Yes. It’s a quick fix which clients often expect but it doesn’t fix anything and in fact usually makes things worse. Also risky. But everyone has their ways. I’m just showing another way. That you can get beautiful and healthy nails without cutting any skin.
