Just a few hours ago, Manjaro released a new version (21.3). Manjaro has three main editions: (1) Xfce, (2) KDE Plasma, and (3) GNOME. I almost always look at the Xfce and Plasma editions of Manjaro, so I thought I would switch things up and look at their latest GNOME edition...

When a distro is "reviewed" and "demonstrated", it seems 80% of the video is spent on installation. Personally, I'd like to see how the "work flow" is like. How does the desktop/distro go about letting users customize settings, themes, icons, the panel, etc. What is it like to actually use the desktop, etc. What are the default applications and how do they look/feel.

Can someone please tell me what's up with the devs of Manjaro? Why is everyone hating on them? What they exactly did? I remember they made Vivaldi default in Manjaro instead of Firefox.
@xKB616
@xKB616 2 года назад
From what I remember, a couple years back one of the guys asked for approval from the treasurer for a laptop and it was denied so he did it anyway and I think they pushed the treasurer out if memory serves correct. They also switched some default apps from FOSS to proprietary, I think the browser and whatever office suite, then switched to well you can decide which ones when installing after the backlash. I’ve always wanted to like Manjaro every time I’ve installed to check it out, but in VMs and on bare metal, it’s always given me some kind of problems, and never the same ones twice. I’ve got a ryzen 7 5800x, Rtx 3060 to, with a midrange MSI x570, and 32gb ddr4 3600mhz. Pretty decent midrange or so PC in my opinion, Manjaro just hates my configuration of hardware I guess.

I've had a bad experience with Manjaro plasma 3 years ago. The GUI elements were buggy right from the start. Testing now the latest version. It's been 3 days, and I'm impressed so far. Being impressed with a Linux distro is a big thing from my perspective because in my experience, 9/10 distros failed right out of the box. There was always something not working as it should. At least the infamous screen tearing with Nvidia cards. This time no st with the default (minimal) installation. Menus and customizing options do what they supposed to, except 2 failures with system monitor customization and notifier from the systray (happened only once). Resources usage is actually quite conservative given the bells and whistles of a GUI it offers. That's a very difficult task to achieve. The CPU scheduler seems to be much more efficient than my daily driver Windows. Default setup drops the frequency of my 5600X below 3 GHz (2.2-2.4), which never happens on Windows where it is 3.6 at minimum. Setting up the min. value to 5% makes no difference whatsoever in Win. Man would think that these drops would have an impact on peak performance, but it's not the case. Geekbench showed expected scores. Monitor switch off on idle works without problems. Setting it up is like in Windows which was problematic in the most distros I've tested before. Watching RU-vid videos is not CPU intensive. Not sure if that's Mozilla to "blame" or Manjaro. Maybe both? So far, so good. I'll give it a month before choosing it as my daily driver.

Thanks for showing us what Manjaro is. I'd heard of it, but I hadn't actually seen it yet. So, watching DT, helps me feel so much more confident and knowledgeable (in an overview way) about Linux, its distros, and how to get started in some distro. Again, I'm still new to Linux, but I plan to move from Windows to Linux, or (let's say, better to be honest) start using Linux here & there until I feel comfortable enough to move away from all of Windows bugs, crashing, never fixed OS problems, etc. Even right now, my ALT+TAB doesn't work, and my taskbar won't pull-up in some situations -- because a prior update screwed shit up.

Looks like Manjaro has improved since I last used it. Previously, they had made so many modifications to their GNOME edition that they introduced many deteriorating UX breaking changes (that Arch doesn't struggle with). These were not fixed with updates, either. They'd simply not be present on a fresh install if you happened to reinstall. I might just chuck this back on my Surface Pro. Not sure yet, though.

I never understood how people can feel personally attacked when someone says something negative about something they like. Just because your personal experience is different than someone else’s doesn’t mean they hate you or anything buddy. So please, calm down, take a drink or toke or whatever you do to wind down, and wind on down buddy. Manjaro, much like every other Distro, is far from perfect. You can like it; That’s ok. It’s just not cool to come at everyone who’s ever had problems with it like they are lying or something. Wow bro, I’ve just always found it weird when people feel personally attacked over brand loyalty. No one was discounting your experience with Manjaro but you felt the need to attack everyone who’s ever said anything negative about it. Manjaro, Arch, Arcos, EndeavourOS, Garuda, Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin, Pop!_OS, Fedora, Suse, and every other OS, Linux or not, will have bugs and problems for some of or a lot of different people. I’m almost positive everyone who’s said anything negative or about bad experiences w/Manjaro isn’t just making it up. I doubt there’s an evil cabal trying it’s damnedest to discredit Manjaro, like it seems you’re alluding to. The devs have done some unpopular things at times and have had to walk some of it back, and if your ok with that like so many more Manjaro users, that’s OK too. There’s as many Distros for all the different ideologies in the FoSS world that if your views don’t align with what the devs are doing then cool, you can find one that (almost) fits your ideological needs. Some people don’t get that far or even care about the devs or Ideology, just if it works and does all the things I need, while it looks pretty. That’s an OK attitude too. Sorry bud, didn’t mean to offend or trigger anyone.

set up btrfs as file system for root during installation. It will create automatic snapshots with timeshift, which are like more powerful system restore of windows. Snapshots are created automatically before updates so if an update does botch it up, you can simply select a snapshot from grub menu and use computer as normal pre-update. Also since they use btrfs's inherent features, they don't take any additional space unlike backups. Manjaro and maybe fedora are the only distros that do this with btrfs. I liked some of the features of Manjaro like the easy kernel updater which was nice as a Linux gamer, and the easy to use AUR software compiler in Pamac, but you are right if you don't update every time Manjaro puts out a notice to do so, you can risk breaking a system, or even if you do it every time you risk breaking a system. That happened to me when I was running the community Budgie edition, all 7 of my machines at the time broke down to the grub menus over a simple update because the Manjaro team pushed out overall system updates, but the Budgie community dev. did not get there updates out in time which caused conflicts, this, among a few other things is why I switched to Solus w/Budgie, and have not looked back.

I found the GNOME edition was a little buggy for my tastes, though I admit it was the live media installation that gave me trouble specifically. I think it looks way better than Pop!, and has many other benefits such as the software it ships with, but Pop! felt really stable if more barebones. If it gets some spit and shine like the KDE flavour I'm sure I'll be even more tempted to switch :) I'd love to get access to the Pacman/AUR software!

I love Manjaro, it's pretty much my goto distribution nowadays. Unfortunately it's still a little hit or miss with Nvidia drivers (Ubuntu works better in my experience), but otherwise Manjaro is rock-solid.
@shauryakalia3296
@shauryakalia3296 2 года назад
You should stick with LTS kernel releases with nvidia proprietary drivers. That is why manjaro comes with LTS kernels as default even though it has more recent versions in repo (that can be easily installed with a click from kernel manager). That is also why ubuntu feels more stable with nvidia as it too comes with LTS and no one bothers to update them manually in ubuntu
@photoniccannon2117
@photoniccannon2117 2 года назад
@@shauryakalia3296 I use the LTS kernels. It’s the hybrid graphics I have issues with, even on the LTS kernel. My card is a little bit older (2018), which might explain it. Usually Manjaro works better than Ubuntu on exotic hardware (and I use it by default on most devices), but it doesn’t agree with my gaming laptop for some reason. I’d like to fix it eventually. There are people who have gotten it working in the past, but I wasn’t able to get it fixed on my attempts of setup. Perhaps I’ll give it another shot eventually, but for now Ubuntu works well on it.

With manjaro breaking more than regular arch and having some extra overhead and delay, i really don't see the reason to use it anymore over endeavourOS aside from the latter not having a built-in GUI frontend for the package manager (that's notoriously buggy not to mention)

I really liked Manjaro but the problem was that it broke my 3 monitor setup continuously. And sometimes it would happen a week later or an hour later I would lose my ability to have all screens show up. I switched to popOS! And so far I haven't been disappointed. I actually like it so much I quit Windows on the spot haven't booted into it in weeks. WTG PopOS! I've been really impressed with it.

This has been my favorite distro so far, but when my Hackintosh performs better on a 6600xt compared to Manjaro on my 3060ti with proprietary drivers as far as the GPU utilization goes, they still have work to do with gnome and plasma. Plasma was a good start in the right direction, but even the stock gnome themes feel janky at times and smooth the other 85%. I'd like to think I have my distro configured properly, just giving the benefit of the doubt. Gnome still lacks consistency in the smoothness efficiency department. My Windows and Hackintosh OSs just run so much smoother consistently, rarely do I notice any jankiness.. The other thing is, I've read that many theme developers have complained how challenging it is to make themes for gnome/manjaro. So couple incorrectly developed themes with the existing inconsistencies. Hope to see the GUI improved on.

I use Manjaro as a daily driver on my PC and laptop. I will be honest the only time it "broke" on me was A) when it crashed because time shift filled my drive cause it was too small and B) when I improperly shut the PC down during an update. It is great otherwise. The dev "untrustworthiness" hype is overplayed just read the comments and the one ytber video it's he-said she-said.

Tried the "full" iso and... looks a very decent gnome experience on Arch. However, like most distros, its bloated with junk I don't need. Then tried the "minimal" version and it felts a great gnome vanilla experience until getting issues due to missing gnome dependencies. Meanwhile, my time quota for arch based distro hopping for 2022 is over... no strong arguments to move yet.
