I agree. It's really the only way to make sure that the quality stays up. When you own a company, you realize that even with great workers, nobody will ever care as much as you do.
This video was such a hoot. If I ever build my own real studio, I'll be going back through all of these for gear recommendations. I'll watch this one twice just for the smile factor. Just tremendous. There. I said it.
David's humor and brilliance are unforgotten. He would have been so proud to have been here. EveAnna has done this task with great dedication. A thousand thanks to Warren for this incredible insight into the product world of this fantastic company. What a magnificent day!
I've tried all 3 reference mics at AES! They sound like a dream :) When I earn the money from recording, I'll purchase the cardioid model. Also have the Voxbox plugin which sounds great.
20 years ago, I worked as studio assistant in France and the studio had the dual mono pre-amp and the variable compressor. I'm no longer in the industry but remember these as great pieces of kit. Used them on everything but mostly on bass/guitars and vocals. I also remember the mastering studio David designed in Paris (La Source Mastering) : it was a real Manley showroom :-) .. Thanks for all the videos you post . It brings back fond memories of my time working in studios
I’ve only used the uad Manley plugins... but I’m thinking of buying a manley reference gold mic .... because it’s a beast ... good vid warren... how do you go about winning the mic maid 🤔
I haven't but now will sell something else and buy some. Amazing interview and tour with an amazing lady. Thanks again for giving us faces and personalities. They are no longer just names and brands but are more like loved ones in our big, wonderful, musical family. Thank you Warren for bringing us all together.
Man, if I only had the budget for a real Massive Passive, what a beautiful product. Thick thick, machined aluminum plates, plus the magic that goes on inside ..just awesome! Wow ..an amazing amount of information she has her thumb on... & on top of it all! awesome!
I love how dedicated she is. I also do very appreciate, that there are still companies, which produce in countries like USA, Germany, France, Canada, etc. But as long as the working conditions are alright, I'm also ok with India, China or Singapore. And as much as I would like to buy Manley, Tegeler, etc, gear, as much I appreciate, that there are companies I can afford. I'm already better off, than most musicians I know, cause I make at least some money with music, but it would be impossible / irresponsible to spend these amounts of money. Irresponsible, because I have a family and other duties to pay, not because the gear isn't maybe worth it. Anyway, great episode and who knows, maybe someday...
I love these videos. Sometimes they introduce me to companies I am not familiar with and others like this one, re-introduces me to Manley and I had no idea the quality they put inside their products. Will be on my top shopping list when new equipment shopping comes around.
We’ve been using esoteric mono block amps and pre amps and AD/DA for decades. I remember hearing a high voltage VTL rig in Chicago in the middle 1990s. It was the highest voltage audio system around. I ran into Evanna at that Stereophile show as she overheard me talking to my friend about her products. I had no idea it was her. She was so cool. I never understood why there was a separation between high-end audiophile gear and recording gear. I swear the lines are going to be blurred; mastering gear and recording gear will amalgamate along with this audiophile stuff because it makes sense and will increase the quality for less money. It’s about time recording folks learn about single-ended triode ancient tech and using phonon-stage equipment for recording. These are great times to be alive. I suggest you go to a stereophile type show. The one in Germany will change you forever and you’ll fall in love with speakers you never knew existed.
I live less than an hour from Chino, CA! Thanks so much for such an enlightening presentation. This is a major American success story and example of hard work to lifetime achievement awards. My favorite studio in Hollywood use their products. I really love their sound. Thanks so much for awesome video! :) Thanks Warren!
Thanks for the tour! The most glorious sounding listening setup I ever had were the massive Manley Neo-Classic 250 EL34 mono amps driving my Thiel speakers! They kept the room warm too in our cold Colorado winters. Tubes Rule!
EveAnna is a legend, as is the Manley operation. Check out her youtube channel, she posts little behind the scenes clips from time to time. Someday I hope to try a slam > massive passive front end [mastering versions] married to a pair of whichever reference mikes I can (not) afford for a hobby/project.
Thank you, Warren.. She is so passionate about her work and work life. A wealth of knowledge and history. Totally enjoyed this. Wish manufacturers would all have this knowledge and work ethic. Would bring more joy to what we do in this industry. And to the people we do it for. ]80)
Warren, Congrats on your BEST tour vid to date. Over an hour seemed like just a few minuites. Thanks for taking us there. I'll definitely be looking at Manley products from now on. These are beautiful works of electronic art.
In this modern world, where everything is fast and furious, Mass produced, everything governed by the "bean counters", and products are here today gone tomorrow. It's nice to see, that there are still companies surviving purely on Quality first. By the way, it's not surprising there aren't any 10" DC Tannoy drivers around, they're all at Manley ;0)
This is an awesome tour & she is special.. I always wanted a ref c but could never get over the chinese capsule.. she keeps saying made in chino not China but her most purchased product, the ref c, it’s heart, the capsule, is chinese. I appreciate her transparency but knowing the capsule is from a $20-50 ( I’m guessing) mic really makes not want to spend the $2800 on it 😢 She knows every part of everything & her passion is still growing after 30+ yrs!!! Great video
Yes man I own the Manley reference c and after watching this I'm disappointed it sounds good but it makes me wonder what it could sound like if it had a high end capsule, also they must make a huge mark up on the reference c
I`ve always loved Manley but watching this I have a new level of respect for Eveanna and her company. Her attitude and approach to gear design and manufacturing is incredible. Imagine a CEO of the company knowing every little nuance that goes into making each project.... here she is.
Wonderful video. I have been looking at the Force preamp for a while. It has definitely moved up to the top of the list with that info about the power supply. I would also like to add add some Manley compressors and eq to my rack too, maybe not all in the same year! ha ha. Great to see good quality work being done, making long-lasting gear in these days of planned obsolescence.
Manley is an awesome company and EveAnna is a very cool person. I own a Massive Passive and I am looking forward to buying more Manley gear! Top notch stuff. Thanks for the video Warren!
Yes! We love the romanticism and nostalgia of our youth! Magazines laying around your house was such a wonderful memory! Personally I still buy them of course!
Wow I never owned any piece of Manley gear. That’s going to change soon. I like her knowledge and work ethic. She keeps it real and doesn’t hide why they’re selling a product cheaper then previous models. I want to buy a pair of their Pultec style Eq’s. At the 1:01:12 mark that Langevin Mic is a piece of sh!t. Hahaha
I met EveAnna at Sunset Sound. She's awesome. So are her products. When I have some Manley in my rack I'll know I've made it! I've been eying a Core for a while.
Sorry to be offtopic but does anybody know of a method to log back into an instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the login password. I love any assistance you can give me!
@Trey Jimmy thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and Im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
EveAnne is the best! I have a few Manley pieces and I love them. I have visited the facility a few times and have always been received by EveAnne, I think she is the only audio company owner I have personally met. Manley gear will always be part of my studio and the more the merrier. And as always Warren, you are a great host, musician, producer, and communicator/educator. Now let me go enter to win the MicMAID, Good luck to me.
First I had the fear seeing a part of production depending on an Apple II from 1982.... Then I had fear when she showed the "Modern PC" running Windows XP... Then I died when she said the "Modern Program" was Corel Designer... Just... wow...
I agree with you. While it might seem off-putting to some outside of America, it does imply that these people are getting a living wage (and from the looks of it) good working conditions which I think everyone can relate to.
It's another world. You've looked at some incredible equipment manufacturers recently, but this stuff is in it's own league. I had to enter, partly because we know it's quality gear, but mainly because, as far as my studio equipment is concerned - and when you see the Manley stuff, I'm embarassed to call it a studio - I'd love to win something I could use, but also something that is more expensive that everything in my studio combined. That would be incredible
I understand why!! I have half million dollars worth of gear, guitars, amps, pedals, mic press, DAW, plug ins, so much gear to make an album! Pink Floyd, The Beatles, all the great would spend weeks or months, sometimes years to make masterpieces and I definitely understand why someone would want to hear what they did accurately!
Tremendous video! There you go Warren, I used your superlative for you. LOL EveAnna is a wonderfully knowledgeable lady, and very funny and down to earth.
Surprisingly engrossing video. Love the handiwork - and personal testing on the components of the Manley equipment. Are any of my plugins individually tested?
Dude that was so terrifically awesome. Transfixed on a work night. EveAnna is a force. I am impressed with the dedication to creating something of real value not just products but as a company with solid values. I remember that Ipod deck from wallpaper magazine the height of style. I think I just became an Audiophile.
Warren, there is a Canadian TV show called "How Its Made". It is a great show, but for a music nerd, this is the best! Great idea for a broadcast and also, great that a proud local business can blow its own horn. Well Done!
I've got the langevin dual vocal combo. It's excellent. Their opto compression is very fast. The shelving eqs are really transparent. All of their gear is high headroom. Top notch unique preamps. Tech support is very helpful on the phone as well.
