Today, we're continuing a multi-video journey on which we will be building historically accurate and authentic city designs in Manor lords, a highly anticipated city-building game! I will explain how the game works as I play and explain some historical details as we go!
Manor Lords on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/13...
Manor Lords is a strategy game that allows you to experience the life of a medieval lord. Grow your starting village into a bustling city, manage resources and production chains, and expand your lands through conquest.
Inspired by the art and architecture of late 14th century Franconia, Manor Lords prioritizes historical accuracy wherever possible, using it to inform gameplay mechanics and visuals alike. Common medieval tropes are avoided in favor of historical accuracy, in order to make the world feel more authentic, colorful, and believable.

Hey! From other Manor Lords videos, it seems like if you don't have the retinue (or get rid of it) you can get more normal army units and then get (or re-get) the retinue on top of that --> therefore allowing you to have more than 6 units.

Regarding the name, some people suggested iron or "Eisen" to be included, which could be fine, but I think there should be something more to it. This region came under the jurisdiction because of a battle; the banner in this battle included St. George, who protected the men, blessed the new inhabitants and gave a holy justification on top of our legal right. Also the literal centre of this town (and probably soon city) is the church. I suggest for this settlement to include this, to name it something like: *_"Sankt Georg am Eisenwerk"_*

Charcoal kilns were indeed often built in remote places in the woods, often along streams so there was easy access to water (essential in the manufacturing process). The fact that they lived so far from civilization meant that (as was often the case with outsiders) charcoal burners were regarded with suspicion and were often accused of theft, conspiracies and evil practices.

34:10 Charcoal kilns were absolutely built next to logging facilities, due to the simple reason that it made economic sense: Charcoal is a lot lighter than solid wood, while also being more valuable per weight because of its higher burn temperature (for example used in smithing or glassmaking). Therefore, it would be pretty stupid to carry heavy logs all the way out of a forest to only then turn them into charcoal, when you can just transport the lighter charcoal and make more profit for the same effort. Here's a german documentary about modern-day charcoal makers: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-db2heXRuOUU.html

I'd recommend the name "Eisenstadt" for the new settlement. Eisenstadt is a real city in Austria, near the border with Hungary. The area was first settled in the Hallstadtzeit (~800 b.C.) and grew over time. The layout of the real place sort of reminded me of the road network you built and well "Eisenstadt" - "Iron City" would also fit thematically with the economy based around iron you're planning for. On a separate note, I'm really enjoying the series thus far. I can't wait to get my hands on the game and that's largely due to your excellent series. I can't wait to see what you'll do in the version we'll get on release.

The word you are looking for, instead of 'random,' might be 'emergent.' I.e., not centrally planned, but spawning according to naturally preferences of the individual actors. Town and road designs, market phenomena, etc. can all be examples of emergent behavior.

Beeswax was used for good quality candles (cheap ones were tallow, but they burned smokily with a tendency to spit). The finest quality of all comes from the honeycomb's wax cappings, as that newly made wax was never reused, so was the whitest (beeswax ages with continued use in the hive to a dark yellow), and was often reserved for the church. This is one reason that monks famously kept bees and used the honey (which was originally their by-product) as a sweetener and for making mead.

This town reminded me a lot of the English Chester/Cester/Caster town plan - based around an old Roman town or fort. There is usually a round or rectangular centre where the old Roman town used to be, with a north/south/east/west cross-shaped road network inside. Then outside is a bit more higgledy-piggledy where people put up houses and services wherever they could find room outside the walls in the "vicus". Castrum was the name for a Roman fortified place, so if you see a British place name like Manchester or Cirencester or Chichester or Lancaster it's usually built around a Roman core.

So according to other creators: if you don't have manors, you don't have retinues yet. You can then build up to 6 militia units first-- and then build your manors to get retinues. So if you were up for it, try razing a manor, creating your archer militia, and placing back down a manor. (You'll probably need to raze all manors until you've got the 6 militias, if you want to max out military.) You should also be able to expand your 5-man retinue, might need some more castle towers etc to expand its max size.

11:41 Bees wax was used in _all_ sorts of crafts and industries. The first thing that should spring to mind is candlemaking; especially liturgical candles for the church. It's used to make glues and in waterproofing of sailcloth and canvas. Wax is used extensively in fine metalworking (lost wax casting). Waxcloth is commonly used to wrap food goods for storage or transport. It's used in leatherworking and tailoring to lubricant thred while sewing. That's just what I could think of off the top of my head. There are dozens more uses. Plus, honey would be the only major source of sugar at this time and was used medically for its antimicrobial (though they didn't understand that part) properties.

As a longwinded suggestion for a full title (Akin to 'Frankfurt-an-der-Oder' as opposed to just 'Frankfurt') from some assorted suggestions: Schmedesburg Sankt Georg ins Grunevelt Meaning the 'Smiths' Borough of Sankt George in the green field', derived from the ironworkers, that it is partially militarised as it's intended to make plate armour to equip the Lord's retinue, Saint George is on their banners and so may be a patron saint or just preferred saint of their Lord, and it sits in shallow dip in a wide, open green plain which presumably also gave rise to the existing Slavic place name (An irl town called Selbitz in Oberfranken arose from an existing Slavic place name of "[the] green one" or possibly '[the] turtle one' but I feel like that one is less likely (Wie viele Schildkröten sind in Oberfranken endemisch?)) Edit: A singular typo in the first line 😅

You can raise militia in the other town, you just set your rally point in the larger town hence the closest militia capable individuals with available war bows is called upon. If you set the rally point as the town to be raided it would call upon the people there. As for the gambesons and armour of militia as well it depends on your burgage plot levels, you can see that the higher level it is the better armour it can be allowed to don. With tier three housing creating a demand for helmets and plate armour even, that can be worn by the lucky few that are in those houses. I'm supposing the idea being that they are expected to bring their own supplies beyond what the lord gives them as basic weaponry.

The game definitely needs to increase the unit limit as you acquire more regions, because six units is not enough to cover three regions, let alone four or more. Maybe a starting limit of six, then 2-3 more per region, with towns being able to support an additional 1-2 units on top of that.

6 units is the cap so far. To get around this create 6 units of militia early on, the minimum weapon amount to create a unit is 5. Then once you have 6 militia build your manor for the retinues. Then you have 6 + retinue for each land you control + mercenaries.

Charcoal kilns are very very dangers. some people would fall in through the layer of earth. you also had to worry about the whole thing exploding from the wood gases being generated.

FYI - In English, the word route (as in trade route) is most commonly pronounced as "root" not "rout". A rout means something that is running away chaotically.

In British English yes but in US English and Australian English (and probably others, too) it is pronounced "rout". In fact, in Australian English "root" is slang for sex, or so I've been told.

During the middle ages Serbia invited a lot of Germans to come and work mines predominantly silver ones, they had their own quarters and were allowed to have a catholic church and of course guilds. This along with those Germans "Going native" and becoming Serbianized meant that Serbia had a massive wealth boom and could spend money on what really mattered. More churches and war. There was also the fact that the ruling Vlastela (Magnates) and the Emperor himself relied on foreign mercenaries to act as bodyguards because they had no loyalties to anyone else. For example Tsar Dusan the mighty who was immensely tall decided he was going to have a retinue of knights that were near his height 2.14m (At that time people were shorter because starvation) so he gathered landless knights that were at least 2m tall from all round Europe and had a German mercenary Captain Palman Bracht (Extremely fascinating person) lead his retinue as a sort of WH 40k Astartes death squad of fully armored knights. He subdued cities in Epirus with just 100 knights because people would look at them and say "Hell no" His grandfather for example used Cumans who he had convert into Christianity and give land as his personal army. Because Serbs staying true to proper Roman statemaking valued that which the Romans themselves loved above all else. Civil wars.

Also fun fact when talking about migrating policies is the Fortified city of Novo Brdo. It was a literal village, completely unimportant and then in a span of 70 years became one of the most rich and fortified cities in all of Serbia because of the silver mixed with gold found there. They were also the last city to be taken by the Ottomans after several series of failed sieges. The city itself is special because it had four different groups in it. 1. Local Serbs who made up the majority, nobility and workers. 2. Ragusans who had a trade outpost in the city and had preferential treatment as traders. 3. Germans who oversee and work and smelting of the mines. 4. Kotoran's (City of Kotor in Montenegro) who were rivals of the Ragusans in trade and unlike the Ragusans were Serbian subjects, they were also famous for importing Italian armor.

I'm not an expert, and i now bees won't hurt anyone if not threaten, baut i suggest you should put the bee-houses near the fields so that the bees are coloser to flowers and not people, i think there isn't a mechanic like a productivity rate of bees but i think it would be mpre realistic

Would a town actually be built on that plain part? I feel like the bowl shape would actually mean the rain water would flow to the middle of the village.

Hello! Would you mind suggesting some reading material (english please!) about all the Dorfs? Angerdorf, Haufendorf, etc. I was trying to find some information but I'm having difficulty! I suspect I'm just not privy to what the magic word I need to search for is. German Settlement Patterns doesn't seem sufficiently clear or specific
