So this was one of the first videos I ever made... Hit that subscribe button to check out the new stuff (40+ videos)! (Also we've got more than 50 new videos coming this year on a huge variety of different subjects)
This was Absolutely Brilliant! Too many times when people talk about “African History “ They solely speak on Egyptian and North African history, as if Sub-Saharan Africa had no history at all! Glad to see more people taken an interest and discussing more Sub-Saharan Africa! Subscribed :)! P.s Also if you get the Chance, I’d love to hear your thoughts on other pre-Colonial Sub-Saharan African Empires/City-States, such as Great Zimbabwe, the Swahili coast, Dhar Tichitt, Djenné, and Great Benin home to the longest man made walls in history! Cheers mate!
Thanks man. Great Zimbabwe is one of my favourites. Video coming some time this year. Going to try and do as much African history as possible. Its a heinously underrepresented topic. It's so tragic that so many people assume there were no great African civilisations. Hopefully I can change that perception a little.
Samuel Appiah it has done little in the time of history it was a flash in the pan, the fact that Mali is a third world nation that almost no one goes to except to bring relief supplies is a shame for a Empires End ,slavery and desert is all Mali means to most of the world Timbuktu is ancient history and it ain't coming back.
Roy Perkins What does the Modern day Nation of Mali , have to do with the Mali Empire? Sparta was once an enormous city with a population of 140,000, now it’s nothing but a humble farming village of 16,000 . Yet it’s still discussed extensively. I think it’s simply a western double standard, to not discuss African history...,
Jason Strom You’re Conflating the Nation if Mali with The Mali Empire. The Malian Empire is *entirely* Sub-Sahran as they lie in the Sahel. Timbuktu, Gao, Djenné are all Sabelian cities. Sahel is Arabic for shore, as the Sahara desert was as an ocean to cross.
They need to make a Netflix series based in The Malian Empire as well as The Ashanti, Zulu, Nubian, Benin, Edo, And other Empires of Sub Saharan Africa
Unfortunately he never met Philip IV of France, with all that amount of gold, he could have solve all his problems of debt lmao Seriously i find African history really interesting. We really underestimate the rich and long history of that old continent.
good books here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PCMJPsNNnYQ.html also the Ivan van sertima, Cheikh anta diop, general history of africa from the UNESCO...
Is it racist to point out this kingdom was the height of West African civilization and after it there was only stangation at best? It is racist look at the differences between West, East and South African culture and compere them to the rest of the world?
appreciate the details and info not in the TED video

Which Museum in the U.K. is the tapestry with MANSA MUSA of Mali's picture ? You have shown it in this great video (The tapestry that is). Is it held in a castle or church ? Just doing some research on the matter !! Looking forward to your response.
The sad thing about Africa is that they were conquered by the Europeans last. All the lessons learned were applied, wiping out the cultures and replacing it with their own. Advanced weaponry was key, but once they got control, they worked to replace the locals for the long haul of ownership. There hasn't been enough time to recover from the decimation.
Joe Blow Seeing Joe Blow Triggered in the comments because people don’t buy into his White Supremacist rhetoric, and actually want an honest discussion on African history, is hilarious
Instead of Hollywood making 12 Years a Slave movies we need more movies being made about our true Black heritage of African Kings and Queens along with the Mali Empire! This history is our real Wakanda!
@@aidansumner8364 A lot of people adopted different religions that didn't originate in their native land. Europeans adopted Christianity from The Middle East, Chinese Buddhism from India.
if you dont mention the 13000 slaves he brought as a present on his pilgrimage(300 years before atlantic slave trade) and then end the vid with the evil euro sob story, you are being completely dishonest
@@aidansumner8364 its magintude and context that matters. everyone had slaves. frpm china to mexico. but africans did it large way before whites came and instead of magnifying mansa musa, africans should be ashamed of him.
@@SuperMrFriendly So why do people glorify people like Churchill Ghandi the Ceasars the Pharaohs who would sleep with their sisters etc etc. Mansa Musa is actually not well loved in actual Mali itself. He's an interesting historical figure and considering the usual stereotypes of Africa being a place without civilizations it kind of obvious why people are fascinated by him despite his flaws.
@@WilliamGarrow here he is always put forward as the shining example for wakanda basically. richest man ever etc and if it whasnt for whitey then wakanda basically. and white virtue signallers are in on it too. its just stupid and destructive to feed this narrative. also for blacks, because the narrative is directed at blaming others and meanwhile nothing is done to reflect on one self or even be thankfull about things generally.
@@SuperMrFriendly You sound triggered. Mansa Musa was a man of his times. During his time period Genghis khan was killing and raping over Asia. Europeans lords were fighting each other. He wasn't that different to any other leader of his time.
When did using numbers for time actually be used by these ancient peoples ? Anyone know? Like at what year AD or Bc people start saying at that time ya it’s 621 or hey no it’s -425 lol pls someone answer me
I don’t understand how could he cripple the economies by doing trading. I presume he would be purchasing goods with gold, that should increase the gold supply and have positive effects on the economies he had been trading with.
Left anti pc He was throwing gold left and right to poor people distruping the economy if you have so much off a valuable meterial and so do same people shit becomes worthless
I mean, you conclude by stating that African history is "as rich and diverse" as anywhere else's but this is your only video about African History (centered around one man) and it's also one of your shortest. Let's be honest, broooooo.
Jovanovic you dont know much about history do you? Carthage was African. They gave Rome a run for its money. The Nubians rivaled the Egyptians for over a thousand years of history. Ethiopia once held an area greater than the size of western europe. Ever hear of the Songhai empire? The Numidian empire was famed for its cavalry and was so important to the Romans that it survived as an independent power well into the imperial age. The Zulu gave the much more advanced British Empire a royal bloody nose....need I go on?
@Erik Johnson "Carthage was African" "Egypt was African" I do hope you know the difference between sub Saharan Africa and northern Africa. Northern Africa is a lot more like Arabia then sub Saharan Africa.
you always ask for suggestions on what we'd like to see in your channel. How about the origins of humankind in Africa, what happened with those who stayed in this continent and also how they migrated? And a lot more about America, too, the far east and the Pacific
My income is barely taxable and I am richer than that miserable beggar Mansa Musa, because I can buy (or even enjoy free of charge) luxuries that he could not have even imagined. For example, good dentistry.
@@saeedboynes7129 I have as many gold bars as would be useful: none. On the other hand, small, standardized, certified pieces of gold can be useful in the case of currency collapse. I am convinced that the US dollar is being set up (unintentionally, by its own arrogant managers) for collapse. If I weren't paralyzed with dread I would build up a reserve of universally negotiable money or wealth of some kind. That could be precious-metal coinage and/or some indispensable skill. For the moment, however, my point stands. I'm sure Mansa Musa had more cavities than I have gold bars.
no way he was the richest, that goes to gilgamesh who is said to have owned every original artifact in the known world... which outmaches any currency!
