Many thanks to Dhruv Rathi for recommending this beautiful piece of art. Now I can say, Amul is not only the Taste but also the Pride of India and one of the most important bone of our Indian economy.
I saw Manthan soon after it was released in theatres. I am not sure of the year but I was in college. It was the late-Seventies, a glorious decade for the Arts. When you are young, you are impressionable and full of idealism. I was impressed, not to say floored, by Manthan. Three things stuck in my mind. The first was Smita Patil. Of that genre of actress, of someone of her raw acting genius, where the line between acting and the real are blurred, there conceivably won't be another actress to grace Indian cinema. I became a lifelong devotee of Smita's cinema after Manthan . She left the world too soon. Number two was Naseeruddin Shah. What brilliance. And, finally, there was the dignity of Girish Karnad, loosely based on the great Dr Kurien. Mostly, I have been appalled revisiting the movies I liked in my youth. It is, therefore, with trepidation that I watched Manthan just now. I was pulled to it again by its restoration which was recently appreciated in Cannes. I must say the movie has stood the test of time. Smita still comes across as a force of nature. Naseer is very good. But I must appreciate the script of the remarkable Vijay Tendulkar which provides the backbone to this picture. The script is taut and pacy, it never wavers from its position that a cooperative is one of the grassroots instruments of a democratic society, and the end is fashioned to support this all-important truth. I am glad that the bulk of Manthan's present viewers are young. We need more of such cinema, and actresses and actors of the integrity and possessed of the talent of Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah.
How many of you came here directly by searching for this movie without any recommendations? I saw this movie when I was a kid and then I read the book "I too had a dream" by Verghese Kurien about a year back. So decided to revisit the movie again :)
I came here directly because I am Naseeruddin Shah's fan that's why now in my free time watching all his movies.Watched Paar movie loved it then watched Nishant movie and now I am here watching Manthan!!!
May Dr Kurien be remembered always for his unmatchable vision, perseverance and the 50 odd years he dedicated for his country's self sustainability in the dairy sector. That's almost equivalent to freedom fighters grit ..... What a visionary he was! It was almost a single handed effort Thanks to Benegal for creating a movie showcasing the co-operative movement.
By watching this movie, I got an idea of the lifestyle of my paternal grandparents, how they lived in India. I miss them terribly. And I have grown fond of visiting their villages. And I want to come to India. If Indians don't mind. Pray may Allah help me Ameen
Watching in 2022 1st time. How can i miss this masterpiece. What an excellent drama and acting of every actors. Nasaruddin shah's acting is just amazing. No words !

@@ShivkumarJhadr I was reading the novel( I too had a dream) at that time. So I don't remember about benefits going back but all farmers are kind of owners of amul so benefits from film don't much to farmers of ANAND.
@@ShivkumarJhadr you know these type of films are not for profit making rather message giving movies and at least these days people are watching meaningful films along with commercial crap so i doubt it would have made any profit but for sure the benefit of the message might have gone to the public that is why there was a white revolution in our country and not just the farmers but the whole country benefitted from that, now you need to judge which is a bigger and better benefit the film making profit and it reaching the farmers or this white revolution which has benefitted the nation and it is also well known and studied in international universities curriculum too.
I saw this movie first time at Regal Cinema in Delhi in 1977. I was really moved by this movie. I always thought weakest link in the movie was Amrish Puri as he used Punjabi or Haryanvi dialect in a movie with Gujarat as background. Priti Sagar’s song was a great hit and she sang on TV shows many times. Black & white TVs those days with only DD channel. Watched it after so many years and it still feels fresh!!
A legendary movie. It shows how much difficulties AMUL would have faced before standing up to become a Brand. It wasn't easy. AMUL just didn't rose as a company, standard of living of millions milk producers rose along. Amul is not just the taste of India, it's Pride of India. India needs several such societies in farming also.
What a movie. This shows how our nation is built upto what it is today. Loved this work. I bet 99.99% of movies made recently would never reach 0.01% of this masterpiece. Jai Hind Jai Bharat
@@dhirajsharma3227dhruv rathi is a youtuber who made a detailed vdo on the success story of AMUL.. He link and recommend this movie for better understanding😊
Today I knew about this movie while reading news paper of BBC that 5 lakhs farmers sponsored Rs.2 each for make this movie. Internationally appreciated this movie. I downloaded will watch in my travel time.
My father is retired from milk cooperatives...he did the same job as Girish Karnaad did in this film back then in 80s 😊😊😊...with these efforts now india is the highest milk producer in the world...intersting to note that milk value ( 200 MT / year) is greater than the combined value of Rice (115 MT) and Wheat ( 100MT) in india 😊😊😊...with no loan waiver...no no free electricity...no overexploitation of ground water 😊😊😊😊
Girish Karnad (Dr.Rao) was the main hero of this movie. I really admire his character the way he played his character in this Movie 🎥 ❤❤👐🏻 Love to watched 😊
I am from Gujarat, rajkot district I know very well of this co-operative dairy system.....and today it is in every village ...our farmers and I also a farmer, we have two income one is from farm and second is from milk..started this type of co-operative societies is very appreciated..I support it.👍
Dr. Kurien was awarded the Nobel in 1989 for his work with Anand Milk Union Limited. China Russia and many African countries lined up at the Dr.'s office and replicated this in their countries....
Thanks to dhruv Rathee 👍🧡...for recommending this... masterpiece 💝.... it's being pleasure to me watching such.... iconic and... inspirational movie Amul...is such an iconic.... successful pride of our India.....❤️💝😌... I'm so... heartful by watching this..... valuable content 🤩
This is one of the greatest Indian movies I ever saw. The acting is very good, also the music is beautiful. I am sorry I cannot understand Hindi, but fortunately there is a copy on youtube with subtitles. Greetings from the Netherlands.
@@zoharizvi1627 to produce and market the movie . No sufficient funds was there and also they planned the movie should be completely in the name of the farmers.
Everyone here is thanking Dhruv Rathi, But I thank my father who recommended this movie to me since childhood. He first watched it during 80s when he visited Anand, Gujrat and it left lasting impact on him. He used to work for NDDB.
Inspired by Dr. Kurien and operation Flood, noted film maker SHYAM BENGEL made the MANTHAN (the churning of the 'milk ocean ') in 1976. Bengal made the film with the contribution of two rupees each, from over half a million farmers who were involved in operation Flood. The film was a big success. 🤓Later, the United Nations Development Programme used the film to start similar cooperatives in Latin America as well ☺😳
A huge thank you to Amul's social media team for making this piece of art available in the public domain. Even via a simple RU-vid channel, you're still doing a service to the country
