We visited Mantic games as part of Orbtoberfest. We dropped in unannounced and they were really busy, and they still took the time to show us around and chat to us. I can't express how nice and welcoming they all were.
I loved how they basically had it ready and we’re just going to hit print and wanted to know the print run. I hope more companies use Kickstarter this way
I can testify that the game was not "done" when the kickstarter was run. The core game was well along but not done and the expansions were still very much works in progress. The retail core box is supposed to be very inexpensive. Competing with Jaws of the Lion on price point compared to Heroquest.
I backed this one and the original. The problems weren't too bad with the original, just what you'd expect. You were not wrong to be skeptical of the Christmas deadline as they were skeptical themselves at times. But they pulled it off. I LOVE the storage trays they give you, to the point I gushed about it for weeks. You get four expansions in there, btw. Their mini quality has gone up, and I think they may be able to compete with GW in that regard (I haven't seem all of the newer Firefight and KoW stuff yet, but if it's similar they should be sitting pretty, especially with GW minis being oversculpted many times). Original game bases were square, they were fixed to the bases after manufacture, and that posed some problems. Molded on square bases with dungeon texture would have been cool, but I think the round ones were a bit sturdier, but I agree with that criticism. Also, still need baggies for the tokens despite organizer trays. This is not a criticism, just a heads up. We haven't played it yet, as I thought it would be nice to go back and play through the original again first. And all the expansions. With my kids on winter break, it's not ludicrous, and would keep me from needing to run D&D for awhile so I can recover from burnout and get some ideas, lol. I did pledge at the Ultimate level, terrain looks great, and the deluxe Overlord screen has pockets, like a customizable dm screen, so you can use it for rpgs, too. Also has a play mat and dice tray. Looking forward to the retail release, which I'll have to keep an eye on. While the first couple of expansions I'll already own that will give my wallet a break, so I can get into King's of War.
Huge fan of Mantic and impressed of their improvements over the years. Coming out as an affordable alternative to a big brand expansive mini game, their tabletop wargames systems are accessible, minis affordable and great quality and these new board games are a show of love for a genuine gaming company doing it right
Personally I was very disappointed with the terrain. Much of it was warped. And no open doors were included!!! How are their other terrain sets? The game sure is fun. Monolith did the same this year with OrcQuest. Great deal, included all expansions and delivered in about 8 months. So far OrcQuest is good fun. (rules need some clean up). Monolith's upcoming Conan KS, I think will also all deliver same year. Agree with the square bases. OrcQuest has square bases and it makes a difference.
