As part of the Farewell HST program, I have the honour of showing you all another drivers eye view video, this time filmed from an empty HST (head code 5M17) from London which runs over the Manton line. Our journey begins just south of Kettering, where we then turn towards Corby on the newest section of line that has been electrified.
The Manton line gives us the unique opportunity to see tunnels in real time, allowing us also to see inside the tunnels themselves and also the longest viaduct in the country! Joining the Leicester-Peterborough line at Manton, our train continuous on through Oakham and Melton Mowbray before joining the Midland Mainline at Syston for the final run down to the Leicester.
A pre-warning, unfortunetly on the day excess water from Corby Tunnel and actual rain itself around Melton Mowbray blurs the drivers eye view temporarialy which is shame. This was the only time I was able to film on the route prior to lockdown and sadly I don't think I'll get another opportunity. Nonetheless, narration and trackside shots provided by Darren Wetherall (MrDeltic15) are key to this film.
My thanks though to Darren Wetherall for allowing me to use his trackside shots to make this film, please go and subscribe to his channel: / mrdeltic15

What a line…5 tunnels, the longest viaduct in the land, largely unspoilt countryside and pretty much no OHLE; even the occasional semaphore. It’s a bit like revisiting the MML from 40 years ago, but with more heavy engineering. Obviously this line’s long-standing status as freight only has helped to maintain its ‘time warp’ feel. Enjoy it while it lasts.

One train was called The Thames-Clyde Express. It was usually hauled by a Thompson B1 and occasionally a Gresley A3.

Time marches on. My friends and I saw these HSTs when they were brand new in the late 1970s, however we preferred the loco hauled trains. It seems strange to me that the HST is now due to retire to be replaced by more generic high speed units. I feel old !

Did the return DMU journey between Corby and Kettering when Corby station first re-opened. Good to see its been electrified now. Surprised to see a diamond crossing survive at Manton Junction (thought that would be long gone).

The kettering sidings were always over grown in the 60s played down there but all so long ago housing has replaced all that now

Not mentioned, the signal box at Oakham was used by Airfix model kits to model their '00' gauge signal box on as one of their kit designers lived nearby.

I lived in Melton Mowbray in the 70s. You could have mentioned that the section approaching MM is dead straight and level and there were once water troughs here. I have seen photos of the two water towers, one on either side.

Shame about the rather unnerving sideways wiggle on the picture. I imagine the camera's image stabilisation is "fighting" with any sideways movement of the train and is actually making things worse rather than better. But apart from that it's interesting to see this indirect route from Kettering to Leicester.

Right, this was a tough one to watch and shows just how much work the other videos must have to get them to look right. That said, Paul's narration and history make up for it.

Great video but just a slight correction there are still 4 intercity trains a day, two in each direction Monday to Friday (Wednesday is just 2 trains a day 1 in each direction) that call at Corby which is the limited service from Melton Mowbray to London St Pancras. Oh and by the way it’s asfordby not Ashfordby don’t worry many locals get it wrong too 😀.

Fab video and a route I haven't travelled on as yet. Why is the 20mph speed limit in force for such a distance after Harringworth?

Despite the wiggle on the picture, this was an enjoyable video. I enjoyed it. The Harringworth / Welland viaduct is a phenomenal piece of engineering. Great commentary and great in cab banter too. Thank you very much.

I think Rutland is the only county in England which only has just one station. ALL other counties have numerous. I'm not sure about Wales - their counties are irregular in size and nature. Scotland - I think all mainland counties have at least one station.

Extremely interesting ride to Oakham through the tunnels and over the viaduct. I assume the camera was externally mounted. Would be great to view a repeat done on a fine sunny day.

Have you used the RU-vid image stabiliser? as it's more wobbly than it should be! turn it off if you can. I can't watch with that, it's making me sick, shame the driver didn't use the wipers also!

The Corby bypass that runs alongside is the A43 not the A45 mate. The A43 runs from Stamford to the M40 at Cherwell valley services via Corby, Kettering and Brackley the A45 runs from Birmingham to Thrapston via Coventry, Rugby and Northampton. They do run close to eachother though

Great video. I'm one of the signallers on the line, so it's nice to see the line from the drivers perspective. I've enjoyed seeing and signalling the 125's through the patch and will be sad to see them go. Just out of curiosity, when was the video shot? Just wondered if I was at work.

@@train_paul9478 - If it was December, I may well have been working Ashwell box that day! I'm a relief signaller, so will be covering all the boxes from Frisby through to Uffington along the Leicester to Stamford line.

Thanks for this, which I assume is the video promised in response to my comment on the St Pancras to Nottingham one. Did not the Thames Clyde Express to Glasgow also take this line? Were you on the red ex-Virgin HST or the blue East Midlands one? And what is the point of running non-stop by this circuitous route?
@train_paul9478
@train_paul9478 3 года назад
That is correct! I believe the Thames Clyde Express did go to Glasgow St. Enoch until 1966 when the station closed. On a red one at the time of filming. Im not 100% but I can only assume it’s for driver route knowledge and competency in case of issues on the MML

When St Enoch closed the TCE was moved to Glasgow Central. At one time the train stopped at Leicester, Trent, Chesterfield and Sheffield on its way to Leeds. I often caught it at Trent as there was a connection from Nottingham.
@grahamwhitworth9454
@grahamwhitworth9454 3 года назад
@@johnhopkinson695 That must have been after the route via Edwalton had also closed. I remember boarding the TCE at Nottingham on one occasion, to go to Sheffield, the train of BR Mk 1 coaches still with side corridors being hauled by a 'Peak' diesel. It was a very slow way to get from London to Glasgow, so I assume most passengers boarded or alighted at intermediate stations, as in the case of the 'Waverley'.
@johnhopkinson695
@johnhopkinson695 3 года назад
@@grahamwhitworth9454 Between 1964-67 I caught every week a train from Nottingham to Chesterfield in the late afternoon. In the early days it came in via Edwalton. We were all surprised when it came in via Trent (we surmised a blockage on the Manton line). The engine ran round and off we headed for Trowell. Thereafter it was always via Trent. BR was well-pleased as the train added a Leicester stop.

At the end of the journey at Leicester the driver had failed to clean the window, so became the dirtiest driver on all my trips, so soon could become impossible to see ahead and then he may actually use the wiper blade, though again he may not and drive blind

Enjoyable video - except for the drivers inane chatting - it would be far better without this. It adds absolutely nothing. I don't need to know about the TKMax store in Corby!
