A How-to video demonstrating some of the techniques used in manual edema mobilization (MEM): light skin-tractioning massage, clearing, flowing, and pump point stimulation. Do not use these techniques if the client has heart failure, kidney failure, or liver failure. See the literature for more information on these techniques, including precautions and contraindications.

question from OT student from FIU, why not go from distal to proximal when performing the mobilizations on the forearm?

Hey! I'm also an OT student. It is because if the proximal segments are full of lymph fluid, there is too much resistance for distal fluid to pass through. You can think of it like trying to pour water into a cup that is already full. Does that make sense?

pulls for edema unrelated to kidney, liver or heart disease

Correct - edema related to CHF or kidney failure is a different thing altogether. MEM is typically contraindicated in these situations, as you can overload the impaired organ(s).
