Patients who have had a stroke often experience reduced arm and hand function. Occupational Therapists use a range of hands-on therapeutic techniques to restore these vital functional abilities.
It's when he breaths out at the end when you realise how hard he's been working through all of this. Simple movements we take for granted. That's some resilience.
I have the same problem and it's very very difficult n disappointing when you can't do something that you have done all your life n take for granted it's not easy at all. I work very, very hard just to lift my arm up to near vertical as possible n I still can't manage it easily it's flaming hard work 😪
Very nice video - I am an occupational therapist - worked with more than 800 stroke survivors over the past 6 years in London- all that I want to say - please do not stop using your hand after stroke, use every bit of movement that you have (it can be just flickers, means a muscle activity), rehabilitation should start day 1 after stroke, 'if you do not use it lose it' is the basic principle. There needs to be more education around role of hand in walking, and how foot placement influences outcome of hand exercises. Simply please do not give up. Wishing you all the best.
I am currently a massage therapist exploring a career in OT. It's nice to know that my massage techniques can still be of use when I become an OT! Thanks for the videos :)
Thanks for the video. I am working with my first stroke patient by now. I am a masseur and a nurse. I see to follow both the science and the instincts. I do body, limbs and facial massages, we train reading, talking, mimics, we excercise, and I have put some kinetapes on the foot, arm and hand. My client is improving so much, really. It has been 2 weeks, he can walk, slowly, but steadily, he articulates much better, the leg and glutes muscles are coming back, the palm starts to straighten. The client is 68, male. He is also my friend, so he trusts me and helps a lot. I come every day and he continues working after I leave. Guys, there is so much we can do! Don't give up on relatives and friends, it seems bad and scary at the beginning, but it is doable, we can do it! Btw, I work with him 30 to 60 minutes a day, also helping with showers and encouraging for occupational jobs like cooking, cutting apple, dressing on his own, and making sure he understands the progress in order to keep faith in recovery. Important point, and my friend knows, too. Strokes can repeat! So educate your clients to stay sensitive to sudden changes and to ask for assistance immediately if they feel like "it", in order to get help ASAP, and to preserve maximum of the gained. Lol to all.
I finally start therapy after 4 months of having a stroke that affected my right side and it has been very hard and not just on me but my husband as well now I can show him this video thank you

I had a stroke 10 months ago. I am affected on my right side which seems to be 90% paralyzed. I am hoping & praying therapy can help me walk and wash normally again.
Hello I’m new to OT and currently in my level 2 fieldwork...my question is that, how do you write all the techniques into OT documentation....thank you
Thanks doctor. I need to learn how to make right arm, hand, right leg and foot of my mother start moving. She had had a stroke in July last year. Physiotherapist is constantly working but it is not result oriented. She is nearly 68.
My wife had a rhs stroke 2 1/2 years ago. We've been doing all these exercises, and more, yet hardly any movement in her right arm and hand. It is so distressing and discouraging to see my sweetheart go through this. I don't know what to say.
If what happens to the scapula happens as you described it at the start of the video, getting you fingers between it and the ribcage to massage the rhomboids is a much better way of solving the problem than just trying to range of motion it free.
Can you guide to some video where therapy helps an old patient to be able to move or lift her hand ..it's been two month regular therapy and no results
Cor I wish she could work on my shoulder I have the exact same issues n I can't get this help here in the UK as there appears to be little to no follow up interest once you have been released from hospital. Im trying all these things myself by trial n error n I have no idea if I'm doing it right or causing more complications but I'll keep on trying to unlock my shoulder and fingers
Same here. My OT only worked with me a few times. My lower arm/hand is WAY behind. Almost a year now since the stroke. I'm trying to walk on my own. Can do so very short distances. But the arm, still difficult to raise and lower and it's swollen all the time.
I have a family member who had a mini stroke recently , spaciity has set in on the right side of patient, I try this procedure and it worked. Question I do have spaciity will set back in an hour later. Do I need to do this everyday?

I’m so very scared about my husbands future , my husband suffered s massive bleed on the brain two months ago , he’s just been transferred to the rehab ward today , he can’t talk well we have heard him say yes a couple of times and no , and a swear word came out the other day his right arm is still paralysed and his right leg was but I’ve seen him move his leg slightly now and then , I m hoping he gets something back cos he’s getting very agitated a lot
Ahh, I love your fetus Yoongi pfp!! My mom just had a light stroke on her right side less than a week ago now, and she's feeling hopeless because she can't afford physical therapy, in order to restore the muscle function on her right side (as well as general motor function). Hence why I'm looking at these types of videos. From one ARMY to another, I hope your dad is able to recover his mobility, I'm wishing you both the best!! 💜
@@shaleemichelle I am so sorry that happened to ya'll. I seriously pray that ya'll will get through this. I will tell you an exercise that I do is lifting my dad's arm up and he needs to look at it (15x) so maybe ya'll can try this. Nothing will recover immediately but give it a try! Another exercise I do with him is one hand holding his elbow and the other hand put pressure on his palm. Good luck and yay ARMY!
@@shaleemichelle Try grounding, you can DIY an earthing mat cheap and easy. It's a natural treatment for almost all health problems, your mom should try it.
There are many materials at home that can be used as therapy materials. Why not start crumpling a t-shirt for finger strength development. As well, let him start standing to develop his knee and leg power.
My sister says she feels pain in her right arm and shoulder when she trys to practice those movements. Are we doing more harm to the shoulder by keep working threw the pain?
Hi i have a few questions. Im in the OT program now and i dont see these types of techniques in our curriculum. I was wondering if this is something you learned outside of school. Also when doing this kind of therapy as an OT dont you always have to link it back to adls and such.
My father had a hemorrhagic stroke 3 years ago..his weakness at leftside..some therapist recommended to apply IRR Machine on affected side but some are saying no need for IRR for my father..only sports injured people can take IRR therary..now i want your advice can my father take it or not....plz...
Treatment varies by individual and diagnosis. We would advise that each patient’s treatment team look into the benefits of particular treatment options on a case-by-case basis.
Hi, If you are referring to a rehabilitation hospital I found Post Acute Medical inTulsa. postacutemedical.com/facilities/find-facility/rehabilitation-hospitals/pam-rehabilitation-hospital-tulsa
you probably dont give a shit but if you guys are stoned like me during the covid times then you can watch all of the latest series on InstaFlixxer. Have been streaming with my girlfriend for the last couple of months xD
Thingolness you cannot begin with functional activities before you mobilize the joints and stretch, make the movements easier when you are working on funtion
OTs also tend to deal with more fine motor skills than PT, though there are some therapies like behavioral occupational therapy that don't focus as much on that. But the fine motor practice of holding his arm up and moving it in a small circle would be considered occupational therapy fine motor practice
Induce movement by pressing the arm and fingers with good hand. This can be started by a relative and followed up by the stroke survivor. Press a stapler to introduce strength on the weak fingers.
