Bought a Subaru hatchback Impreza (5 speed manual) in Sept 2022. I love it! I had been driving a 2007 Legacy wagon-great car. I bought the new Impreza because in the future Subaru will not offer manual transmission. I will only drive a 5-speed! Old school and proud of it!

@@mrwhips3623 I factory ordered the car with the manual transmission via a Subaru dealer which took about 5 months. I live in Montana and there are a number of Subaru dealers because of the demand for AWD vehicles given the icy roads during the long winter. The car was delivered to my house which was really convenient since the dealer is 120 miles away. At least for now, Subaru is offering manual transmission; however, not every dealer has one in stock, so I think a factory order is required.

I pick up my base 2022 Impreza hatchback with a manual on Monday. Needed something practical with AWD, and inventory everywhere seems to be slim pickings, across all makes. Today, I happened to find one in a neighboring state that someone ordered in, but opted to not take delivery. Going to grab that stick shift while I still can!

My 2021 manual Impreza gives me 6.5 litres/100 km (35 MPG) in the highway with the a/c on, and I am happy with this. The car is not particularly fast compared to a Civic, on dry conditions. But when winter comes here in Canada the opposite is true. And on slippery roads the Subaru's full time AWD is far better than the "grip & slip" Haldex system used by Toyota, Nissan, Mazda, Hyundai, etc. Also, the base model doesn’t have a push button start... my niece calls this and the stick shift “the best millennial antitheft devices”

I just bought an used Impreza sport in Manual. Could you tell me "Please" what you usually run the RPM at for cruising in gear. I have been shifting at 3,000 rpm and generally cruise at 2,500. Would you agree with my normal operating treatment as i want this car to last me a long time. Thank you and great video.
@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich Год назад
Those are certainly good shift points, but you should know that revving the engine is not the same as abusing it. As long as the oil changes are done on time and the oil level is topped up and the engine is warmed up to normal operating temperature, it won't hurt it to rev it higher sometimes. Subarus can burn oil in the course of normal operation so I recommend checking the oil every 1,000 miles and topping it off if it needs it, oil change every 6,000 miles and change the spark plugs every 60,000 miles per factory recommendation.

@@CarDietrich Thank you for the info. I've decided that if I hit 2'000rpm (slowing down) it's time to downshift. Likewise if I hit 3,000rpm it is time to up shift. I want this engine to last an long time.
@barryg.709
@barryg.709 10 месяцев назад
Smaller engines usually require more revs at the lower gears to get the car moving quickly. Because this car is All wheel drive, I think it needs more revs than say a Honda Civic. I've been driving this car for a year and I generally upshift at 2,500-3,500 rpm when driving on 35-40 mph roads. The "control" part of the manual is that you're allowed to rev the car high in the lower gears. It's not bad to redline it in 1st gear, it just uses more gas than needed (per drivers manual the Impreza max speed at 1st gear is 30mph). I'd say it's more important to listen to the engine instead of focusing on the RPMs

The problem with selling Subaru is that the 2000 model cars still feel new, they are reliable, take a beating, look like space craft, still win races, so it's tough to buy new ones, you end up with a pile of Legacies and Outbacks the look like you're doing a museum exhibit to show to evolution of the Subaru

I would LOVE to "save" Manuals, but the only problem is I'm addicted to "Cruise Control".... It's a MUST have for me now. (LOL, didn't realize manuals also had Cruise Control) Really I think Manuals only should exist on "small sports" type cars anymore... So, people who want the sport effect with their car, they can get a manual on it and have fun. If I ever get a fun sports car as an extra car, I WILL want the Manual for sure... So, FYI for the Manufacturers....
@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 2 года назад
I have become addicted to Adaptive Cruise Control, which is really only practical on an automatic transmission. But yes for a fun second car Manual is preferable. Luckily some "fun" cars (WRX, MX-5, Mustangs, etc) are typically still available with manuals because the demand is there for those.

Subaru doesn't allow their dealers to order cars for inventory, they just build them and ship them out. So your dealer didn't specify the cars that way, Subaru did. I'd be curious if the hatchback SPORT models shifting is noticeably better. I understand it comes standard with the "STi short shifter" option. I also wonder how close to a fun "WRX"-like experience (minus the new one's cladding and iPad and lack of hatch) you can get if you order the Impreza Sport trim then and add the STi strut tower brace accessory, plus, maybe the STi wheels with some fun/sticky tires. Still down on power, but maybe still fun to drive?
@CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 2 года назад
The STI short throw shifter does make a difference but its not huge. The car you are describing (Sport Hatch with all the STI bits and some sticky tires) would be fun to drive, it would handle very well, but in my opinion what you would miss the most from the WRX (besides the power, obviously) is the steering feel. I haven't driven the newest WRX, but all those that came before had very communicative steering, and the Impreza just doesn't. The Impreza handles well, better than you might expect actually, you just don't get much information from the steering wheel.

Did you view the TOP GEAR Episode where they installed every Boy Racer modification-- suspension lowered-fancy shocks--expensive sticky tires-free flow exhaust etc.etc.The thing was slower around the test track--some times a car can perform better if it leans a bit on its softer suspension-- and can slide in a controlled manner on slightly less sticky tires-- as a further comment-- with a longer stroke engine--change sooner (lower revs) drive it on the torque-- my 6 speed stick Corolla will pull away from as low as 1000 revs. without protest--When in the mood-- flat to the floor- but change at only 4000revs or do and ride the Torque-- like a big rig-- keep it in the Torque band-- this even applies to short stroke motors-- 427 short stroke V8-- absolutely no point in revving past the maximum torque area 👍

I won't comment on anyone's economic status, but I will say that as a rule of thumb, people who have their hearts set on a manual transmission are much more likely to be looking at used cars. @CarDietrich
@CarDietrich 2 года назад
That is a fun car, and I also imagine it could be a money pit. It's funny because I have had so many comments from people wishing manufacturers built more cars with manual transmissions, which I totally understand as a car enthusiast. BUT, I have also worked as a car salesman for 15 years, so I see it from the manufacturer's point of view too. There are lots of reasons for them not to build manual transmissions anymore, the primary reason being the damn things just sit there on the lot like this one did. So I had an idea: I want to buy a car (I'd really love a 4th Gen F-Body or an SN95 Mustang with a V8) that has a manual transmission but needs a lot of work, and be like "Ok folks, the only way we're gonna keep stick shifts around is take care of the ones that have already been built. So I'm gonna take this pile and fix it on up." And then take the car and do what needs to be done to it: tune up, body work, paint job, clutch, tires whatever. And make videos about that whole process, and then when the car is done auction it off on eBay motors. I would surely lose money on this process, but the question is would I make enough money back from ad revenue, gained subscribers, and tax write offs to make it make sense? At the beginning of this year I was actually searching for a car to do this with, but the car market is so screwed up right now that you can't even buy a clunker for cheap. So I took the money that I was going to spend on that and rented new cars off of Turo to review them instead. But that idea is still in my mind.. Do you think its a good one? Because I go back and fourth on it. It feels like a risk.
