Manuel & The Music of the Mountains - Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto de Aranjuez [1971]

Track 9 from the 15th album by Manuel & The Music of the Mountains, "Carnival", released in 1971. The full title of the track is Rodrigo's Guitar Concerto de Aranjuez (Theme From The Second Movement).The album reached No. 3 in the UK album chart in March 1976.
This track was released in the UK as a single at the end of 1975, backed with "Mirage" (also uploaded). It entered the UK singles chart on 31 January 1976 and, when the chart for 28 February was announced, this was declared as the new UK No. 1 selling single.
However, as soon as the track had been played on BBC radio as the No. 1, it was announced that there had been an error in the chart calculation. Three hours later, the revised chart was published, and Manuel was now at No. 3 - the highest "official"position it reached. However,this track was the UK's No. 1 single for three hours, the shortest ever time spent there by a song. A record breaker for Manuel!

Its strange the way only music can evoke such memories of the past and take you back to where something memorable happened in your life. To me, this music is a stage of my life when I started to feel what love was all about, such strong moving music tearing at your heartstrings, yet you still want to continue to listen. Music of the Mountains was a favourite of mine, as soon as I listened to it and it still can do the same to my heartstrings, even now.

The circumstances quoted herein . . . "This track . . . entered the UK singles chart on 31 January 1976 and, when the chart for 28 February was announced, this was declared as the new UK No. 1 selling single. A record breaker for Manuel!" . . . almost ties him with Gerry Rafferty in the U.S. for the shortest time ever spent on the Billboard Hot 100 at #1 for his 1978 hit "Baker Street," no? It was known that their chart compilation department had that as #1 one week, dethroning Andy Gibb's "Shadow Dancing" after a multi-week run, but once RSO and Gibb's management got wind of that, they promptly got on the phone with the head of BB's chart department, the infamous Bill Wardlow (and essentially pulled blackmail tactics on him), and thereafter Andy spent another week at #1 while keeping Rafferty cooped up at #2 where he'd been for the longest time up to then. ("Baker Street," however, was a #1 on the Cash Box chart, similar to this song being #1 in Melody Maker.)

My Late Mum and I used to love listening to it together, it was one of our favourites!!!!! I decided a long time ago that I'd like to have it played at my funeral. Years later my late father in law had it played at his funeral, so very touching indeed.

This magnificent piece reminds me of huge, grey, snow-splashed mountains against a brilliant blue winter sky; and also of a very moving portrayal of the Crucifixion of Christ once acted out to it by a Christian theatre company. No matter how world-weary I'm feeling, it never fails to stir.

The No1 that never was! Due to a technical error this record was announced as the new No1 in the UK charts by DJ Johnnie Walker during the weekly chart update at Tuesday lunchtime in March 1976. However this was soon rectified, it transpired that data returns from a number of record retailers hadn't been included and the organisation responsible for compiling the charts very quickly rectified the situation. Red faces all around. Therefore, the No1 that never was.

@@wmbrown6 The Melody Maker Chart had zero clout beyond Melody Maker. The BBC carried the officially recognised charts for the UK and were published in Music Week the UK music industry's weekly publication. These are the go to reference for any chart facts when researching the period.
@wmbrown6
@wmbrown6 2 года назад
@@knockshinnoch1950 - You sound like many an American who totally discounts Cash Box' or Record World's chart positions, only taking stock in Billboard (thanks, Joel Whitburn and "American Top 40" for that whole "if it wasn't #1 in Billboard, it wasn't #1, period" attitude). Melody Maker was very highly influential (as was New Musical Express) up to the point when the BBC and Record Retailer (which became Music Week in 1972) first contracted with BMRB in 1969 to compile their 'official' chart. I've come to believe in the big picture, not just what went to #1 officially but also in all the other UK charts that existed between 1955 and 1988. To only go by one chart to the exclusion of others is the ultimate distortion. Even the BBC itself, prior to 1969, had an 'averaged' chart, sampling all music charts except Top Pops.

In the late eighties I was on holiday in Majorca with a girlfriend. This was being played over the pool music system. It was hot and sunny, I just lay there in a daze. I didn't have a clue what it was, but could not understand why I had never heard it before. When we got home I heard it again on the Alan Freeman show, but missed the title. I wrote to the BBC and asked him what he played on xxx date and time. To my amazement he replied and told me.

The British Market Research Bureau used a punch card computer system to compile the charts and an error caused this single to be announced as the new number 1 by Johnnie Walker during the Tuesday lunchtime chart rundown on BBC Radio 1 in late February 1976. Later during the drive time programme presented by Dave Lee Travis it was demoted to number four and ‘December 63’ by the Four Seasons was actually the new number one. Although it went up to number three the following week this single never did make it to number one.
