"Manufactured" Home Renovation Nightmare | Holmes on Homes 701

At the base of the Rocky Mountains in Alberta is the home of Yvonne and Tadashi. Their home is refer to as “manufactured”- a house that is built in a factory and then transported in sections to the site and placed on a ready-made foundation.
They decided to add a small addition- Mudroom and covered front porch- and had blueprints drawn and hired a local contracting company.
Everything seemed to be going to plan, until the day the roof went on. The homeowners noticed that the new roof and the old roof didn’t lineup. The homeowners found themselves in a stalemate with the builder, who was demanding the substantial completion payment, when there were obvious major structural flaws still-to-be-addressed. Yvonne and Tadashi offered to let a lawyer hold the payment ‘in trust’ until the work was completed. This was unacceptable to the contractor, who walked away from the job.
Our homeowners found that no other contractor in the area wanted to touch another contractor’s unfinished mess, and so they called the one person they knew who would, Mike Holmes.

Original contractor should be liable, but the city inspector had to have signed-off on the job. If no permits were pulled, then the contractor should be in prison. The homeowner should not have to know what permits and/or inspections are required for a renovation. That's part of the "contractor" agreement. As a side note, if I was a close friend or a relative of our homeowner, the "contractor" would no longer be a problem.............................

This is what keeps me believing in people. When a whole lot of people come together to help someone who has been wronged. Its a shame that contractors can get away with bad work that can harm people and no one is doing anything about the bad work they get away with. And then Mike Holmes and crew coming along, overbuild a deck that will not go anywhere. As well as all the other projects that got tackled, with this house. This is the worst episode that has been uploaded and not because of Mike whatsoever. This almost killed 4 people which is why Mike never believes in minimum code. The fact that this deck was installed so poorly yet lasted 3 years is absolutely unbelievable. To whoever installed this seriously come forward and pay the price for your terrible work. If you seriously don't feel any remorse may god have mercy on your soul which in my opinion that isn't even deserving. Mike and crew all of you did an amazing job. As others have said, contractors generally form separate companies with little assets to go after. Prison time is very rare even in blatant cases. It's buyer beware and doing due diligence. Difficult for the layperson when it comes to structural issues, which often may not be visible without in-depth inspection like Mike Homes does.

This is why I never would trust a deck that is more than 3 ft off the ground. I had 2 pressure treated boards rot 4 years after my contractor built our deck. The boards looked fine and I had sealed them. My foot went through the rotted board. Thankfully I didn't get hurt badly. Twisted my knee. Mike built a deck that should hold a dozen people. Nice job.

This is also why you get at least 3 quotes, ask lots n lots of questions and make sure you only pay 20% to start, don’t pay the rest until job is done. Aldo make sure on the contract there is a start date and a completion date. Never sign contract without those dates…:

Stick built homes on a location are obsolete and too expensive. Plus how much of that home is wasted space that needs to be heated and cooled? For what! Bugs and animals. Even Habitat for Humanity is going with other types of homes that are cheaper to build and more energy efficient. How many people are involved in building a stick built home on a location? Too many. Too many ways to cut corners, and to drive up prices.
