It's absolutely astounding to see a fully operational workshop like that these days. The finished engine looks spectacular! A credit to all of your engineers!
It is good to keep the engineering skills alive, and to pass them on to the next generation. A lot of the skills used on steam locomotives are still used today.

It's truly a golden feather in the Platinum Cap of Golden Rock, a Workshop of many capabilities. This is nothing short of creation of history in the annals of heritage Railway in India as the X class locomotive comes alive in a new patent by GoC. NMR and Heritage Lovers would be forever grateful to GOC for this monumental work. Hats off to the entire team of GOC for this stupendous achievement!! 👏👏👏

Golden Rock workshop is a great asset to tamilnadu and all the technicians contributed a lot for the manufacturing of an engine of age old technology.its rather difficult to make such engines.most of the technicians who had handled such x class engines would have got their retirement. Yet the team of engineers and technicians made a remarkable achievement by the drawings preserved till date..! Kudos to our engineering team who realised the dream.in future such engines are possible for tourist attractions at various places...!

Good work!, These are by no means simple engines, but rather complicated. It had a reason that all the earlier X class were built by SLM of Switzerland while the majority of other locomotives came from the UK or were later locally produced.

A brand new steam loco built to mostly century old specs, that too a complex rack type climber! That's quite a feat of dedication & research, & now the skills have been passed on to another generation. Steam tech lives on. Now if only someone could sit down with drawings for audio cassette transport & head remanufacturing....
Nice to see the Royal steam engines still manufactured in India... very good 👍👍👍🙏 and I request Indian railways all the mountain railway engines should run in this kind of steam engines it gives Royal touch to railways and will be highlighted in tourism.
Superb, but what a shame that Golden Rock staff wasted so much effort on 'doing their own thing' with those hideous oil fired monsters. If you have a World Heritage Railway, this kind of engineering is what is needed. Well done on a 'death bed conversion'!

It always gives me goosebumps when ever I get to see such great effort from indian railway especially from GOC, the same place where my grandfather worked for almost 40 years. The achievements of GOC and it's staffs are highly commendable

You made all Mechanical Engineers and Indians proud in manufacturing the iconic X -Class Loco of original Swiss Locomotive & Machine Works by reverse engineering and added braking systems for NMR. Proud of you all involved in this effort. One day you may think of Oil fired X - class too.
Unbelievable Ponmalai work shop has done it again. They are Mechanical marvel. Indian Railways should seriously consider for export of these Steam Locomotives . Wish Ponmalai work shop for many more miracles in due course.

I am also confident that this re engineering can be carried out for constructing a metre guage YP class steam locomotive. Over 2000 units were manufactured by Tata Motors jamshedpur under German collaboration till 1970. About 20 units survive to this date despite phasing out of MG lines. The NMR line is a heritage MG line
Having been a summer student trainee in several Indian steel plants and having worked in a steel plant in Canada and aluminum & copper smelters in Canada, the US, and Australia, it is flabbergasting to see that people working with extremely hot and sometimes molten steel and other metals in the video to not have enough safety gears. They are NOT wearing safety helmets, safety glasses, or smocks to cover their bodies. Not sure if the shoes they are wearing are steel-toed or have steel insoles. They don't have metatarsal coverings either!! The manufacturing of such a locomotive is very commendable nevertheless!!
In South America, Chile, when they changed from steam engines to diesel engine, they did not produce same power on high altitude. Steam engines produce same power irrespective of altitude where as diesel engines go out of breath on high altitude so can't produce same power on high altitude. So they had to use bigger diesel engines.
"Maintaing correct clearance and geometry while press fitting" Some guy with a sledge hammer beating the part in to place. Just shows how loose the actual tolerances really are on an old style steam locomotive
