This should never happen to anyone ever, it can happen to anyone. I had a medical emergency and went to the emergency room with good insurance. The insurance company ended up claiming there was no medical necessity even though I was literally choking to death. I received a bill of $16K, and eventually the hospital negotiated with the insurance company and brought it down to $1,500. However, this was 6 months after the event while I'm sitting around trying to appeal their decision worried that I was on the hook. I am a Republican, but when it comes to health insurance the free market has failed miserably. This is one issue I believe should be socialized even at the cost of increased taxes.

I’m sorry this happened to this lady. Sadly it happens to thousands of people every day. Our laws need to be changed and more specific. There needs to be real transparency and accountability. Yes, hospitals typically offer a cash price for you to pay at the time of service but you typically don’t know what that price will be until you are billed. You can ask to make arrangements to be billed and make a payment plan which in some hospitals is at least half of what the typically charged price is. Ask when you go in and keep detailed records. Ask in writing while you’re there to be put into your records or if someone is working from the finance office maybe you can speak with them. Sadly, if it’s an ER visit, you typically don’t feel well enough to do all of this especially if you think your insurance will cover it. The bill can be negotiated. Do it all in writing. Also, the 2 biggest companies for lab tests have a cash price list also- not for labs done at the hospital but if you go to one of their blood draw facilities, you can get lab tests with a Dr’s order for at least 50% off if it’s paid in cash and up front.

Here in the U.S., everyone's paying for health insurance and yet they also don't want to see a doctor or go to a hospital even if they feel like they're dying because they're afraid they'll go bankrupt simply from the visit. Meanwhile, in other countries, people have no problems going to visit a doctor for a minor cut or cold because they're free or a small charge. We pay more for worse care than any other first world country all while they have universal healthcare. I would rather pay a bit more in taxes than be stuck with tens of thousands of dollars in health care debt. We need to realize that these companies cannot hold themselves accountable because almost every time they will refuse to do the right thing. There needs to be steep penalties for medical facilities who aren’t compliant. At the billion dollar company that I work at, our health insurance is expensive to the point where it’s over 500 dollars a month for 2 people all while giving you terrible coverages. No where in the United States should needing medical care bankrupt you or be the reason that you die. only medicare insurance is required to disclose an advanced beneficiary notice of non coverage, sadly it's not required for commercial insurances. the patient should have been notified of insurance not covering. She can potentially appeal the claim if she is still a US resident. Pricing is not widely available because in the states we operate under a prospective payment system so the patient is seeking care from the hospital for pps. If anything she can give the hospital a bad rating and give a complaint. Most hospitals have incentive based care. If the management and patient care quality is subpar they can easily go under.

Healthcare has gone the way of a business like buying a car instead of a public good like police and fire fighters that’s where the flaw is.

This is what happens when you allow corporations to pay to play in politics. If you're daft to what's going on, look into campaign finance.

READ YOUR EVIDENCE OF COVERAGE. The lady at the end says it’s a lot of “work” . Well duh - it’s a YOUR insurance. Read your insurance copays, be knowledgeable instead of complaining what you initially signed up for or ask. Information is all there. Be educated before a medical emergency 🚨

Eh, I have a relative who works as an insurance specialist in a large health center. I've lost count of all the times she's told us about how an insurance company basically denied coverage that the policy provided. I've even had a procedure pre-approved (both verbally to me by a rep and documentation sent to the dr office), but then later received a claim denial letter after the procedure was done. Insurance rep couldn't tell me anything. The dr office pulled up the pre-approval. It was confusing as hell. Eventually I got a partial payment and the dr office cut me a break. But the dr office basically said they see it all the time now. They're even seeing small print at the bottom of pre-approvals that say something along the lines of, "Pre-approval does not constitute approval. Claims may be denied for cause at any time." You can be proactive and educated about your policy and still get hosed.
