Many Models TRIP, FALL & REMOVE THEIR SHOES at Valentino Spring⧸Summer 2023 

It’s mind boggling that a huge fashion house like Valentino just can’t get the right size shoes for the models especially when they have to wear heels. It’s a safety issue. You have the money.

I knew it. The show was pretty messed up as soon as I saw the first girl in shimmer black hoodie walking on the runway so wobbly, but they did cut all these models falling off from the video. Thanks for sharing this one! I feel so bad for one particular model who was reaching out for help to one of the audience (obviously because of the extremely uncomfortable shoes) instead getting none, hundreds of cellphones recording her struggles. Painful to watch. Keeping the models safe on the runway is also important.

For everyone talking shit on the models, as a model who JUST walked this Paris Fashion Week, let me educate you on a few things: 1. The majority of shoes you see models walking in on the runway are prototype versions, meaning they aren’t what you end up buying in-store, and 95% of the time the design isn’t even finished. This means models are usually walking in shoes that aren’t actually walkable. 2. Everything in the runway industry comes in “standard sizes,” meaning the designer doesn’t give af what shoe size you are and oftentimes doesn’t even ask. Most of the shoes for any collection will come in a size 40 (US size 10) and if you want to be in the show, you have to walk in that size, regardless of whatever size you actually wear. (For example, I’m a size US 7, and I almost always walk the runway in a size US 10.) That’s THREE sizes too big, in a shoe that’s also not physically finished/designed for walkability, so it’s no shocker that a lot of models struggle to walk on the runway. 3. Designers give models ONE runway rehearsal (if you’re extra lucky, you might get two), and some designers don’t allow the models to walk the rehearsal in the actual shoes from their look, AND a lot of models’ looks get altered/switched around the day of the show, meaning it isn’t uncommon for a model to be walking the runway in shoes they’ve never been able to practice in, or even simply try on. On top of all of this, runways where you walk to the end and walk back are pretty much a thing of the past. If you look at the runways of today, designers believe that the more extravagant and difficult a runway is, the better the show becomes. So imagine only getting to practice the runway ONCE, but there are multiple rooms to go through, multiple turns and twists and zigzags, AND you’re walking in shoes that are way too big or small, and literally UNWALKABLE. Not to mention, you have to find the main camera to make sure you get your photo for Vogue Runway, which is one of the most important things to remember while walking. This particular show was not a “model problem,” it was a problem with the designer not designing shoes that were possible for the models to even walk in. It was dangerous and careless, and many of the models could have gotten seriously hurt.

I can’t believe this. It’s humiliating. Every damn fashion house should have a proper shoe sizes for every single model during fashion shows. What is wrong with this industry!

Absolutely maddening the models were put through that. They could’ve gotten seriously injured. No model should have to injure themselves for a fashion designer.

On a positive note, The shimmering hooded outfit & model wearing it were BEAUTIFUL! If they’d given the model her correct size I’m sure the look would have been the centerpiece of the show! 🤩

My heart goes out to the models. Clearly it's not their fault. They wouldn't book jobs if they were that bad. So it's the fashion house and whomever is in charge of shoes. These models can seriously injure themselves. One hard fall can roll your ankle and dislocate your hip.

And quite a few lost their way walking in between the rows with the audiences' backs faced to them ... what a mess of a show for such a pleasant collection ..

For those wondering, this is most likely bcuz the models are wearing shoes that are 2 sizes too small for them. It’s extremely painful and actually causes the feet to go numb, hence the wobbly ankles. Fashion designers generally do this bcuz the smaller sizes “look better” as opposed to a larger US women’s size 9 for example. This is also why the display shoes in stores will almost always be smaller sizes like a US women’s size 5 or 6. I don’t know for a fact that this is what is happening here, but this is my speculation based on info I’ve read in the past about other fashion shows.

From a marketing perspective, seems like it would make more sense for the models to wear the proper sized shoe, because from a consumer perspective, it just seems like the shoes are super uncomfortable.

It is not model fault. Designer gives random shoe size that can be too big or too small, so its impossible for a model to walk normally. Also, organisators should have prepared and check if everyone remember their path to walk. Again, not model problem, but management f* up.

It’s common for models to have to wear shoes down the runway that aren’t their size and despite that they’re still able to successfully walk. This makes me wonder why this show was so catastrophically bad in terms of shoes/walking. I feel like the only reason why this was so bad is because Valentino shoes must be shitty or it was just poor planning by the brand, you could blame it on inexperienced models who don’t know how to walk in a different shoe size but even then the rehearsal walk before the show should’ve weeded out any models who struggled to walk. This is a major mess on the fault of the brand and is just embarrassing for them.

When you have that many mishaps with models, that's on the designer

It's funny how the designs that represent the brand are beautiful and so are the models wearing them only to be damaging and hurtful which in turn actually ruins the image of the brand. I hope this doesn't get swept under the carpet

Management of clothing had not even strapped the shoes on properly to the girls before going on Runway. They did not stand a chance of walking well without them being attached to their feet in the first place. I am glad no one hurt themselves. X

You would think that the designers would give more thought into the shoes because I was so distracted by the poor girl wobbling down the runway that I didn't really see all the lovely details in the clothes.

Damn, within the last couple of seasons there have been big screw up from major fashion houses. There was that disaster Balenciaga show where the finale dress couldn't even walk and had to slowly waddle and had to take steps backward to recover. Then this, the most humiliating thing to ever happen at a Valentino show. It's been a hard year for runways.

Valentino thought they were being clever by bothering to get the correct shoe size for their model’s feet, and as a result they’ve created the best “don’t buy Valentino shoes” warning montage.

Sorry but that girl in pink at 0:34 or any of the others sat around could have used their common sense to know to help when the model clearly needed someone to hold onto for a second to get her balance. No it’s not the audience’s responsibility but damn when you see someone struggling how can you not help. I would have just said hun let’s get these silly shoes off. The models aren’t newbies and have walked many shows. I’ve worked backstage on shows before and they really don’t care about correct shoes sizes etc and it’s usually all a rush

A lot of these European designers make shoes for European women with narrow feet and high arches (not saying they’re the only ones with narrow feet with high arches) but it is common. Just look at Louboutin. So many women say that they are very uncomfortable and hard to walk in due to how narrow the shoe is and how high the heel is.

I strongly believe that they give them really absurd tight shoes (or undersized) to the point where walking is just agony. All for aesthetic purposes.

The model’s comment here is really enlightening. And, you know, if you’re like me and don’t know any of this, I see these images and think, why are women expected to buy and wear these shoes? They look like torture.

During the show many models where struggling to walk in their stilettos and Plattform heels - several of them removed them while two of them even fall.

Valentino Garavani might be furious and devastated to the production and the designer. As he always said before “I don’t want crazy looking model!!”. The shoes really are the devil😅

so what did we learn today? about valentino shoes as items for purchase. about the goal of fashion shows to showcase items for purchase. about the job responsibilities of runway models. about standards of beauty and fashion.

This is workplace abuse. Can you even fathom the pain you would feel breaking your ankle because you had no choice but to wear those heels or potentially not get paid? Then your out of work for possibly months because of the injury, and on top of that you might need surgery. This is disgusting.

So many designers do this and it’s messed up. I had a girl fall in front of me once because they gave her broken shoes to wear. I learnt that day to bring my own shoes to a show (closest to the ones used) and put my shoes on backstage right before going onto the runway. I would advise any young models to keep black, grey, tan or other neutral colour heels in their model bag permanently. It’s the only way to avoid these situations. Trust me, designers do not care

EVERY designer no matter how big typically has sample shoes that are made well before they even start thinking about casting models. Those are typically a size 10 US. It’s unfortunate but either models walk(or try to) in them or they don’t walk at all

Models should demand the fashion industry to guarantee their safety under any situation. They must imagine a fashion show without models wearing their clothes... that's how important models are for designers AND owners to keep making money. There are hundreds of shows where models can't walk or look hopelessly uncomfortable and unhappy but I've never seen a customer looking like that. If customers look great in those super expensive clothes...why do designers make models look that terrible on the shows?? They deserve better working circunstances.
