I retired last year at 55, after 27 years of working 10-12 hours 6.5 days/week. At some point, time and freedom become more important than earning more money. I haven’t had a single day of boredom and I am so much more healthy. Life is good. 😁

Definitely! It’s sad so many people end up working so long out of fear they don’t have enough money that they never really get to fully enjoy the fruits of their labors when they are healthy enough to really enjoy it as they should! This often seems to be a big problem for those who have saved aggressively and lived well below their means for decades! Many of them have never really taken a close look and just stick with conventional thought and advice on retirement.

God willing (stay healthy), I am retiring next year at age 55. So blessed to be able to do so. I work for a very large Corp and today the CEO was telling us why we should all put the pronouns we identify with in our contact info so we can show we are allies to that community. I fully support what anyone "identifies" with, but I was like "really?...that's what we need to be concerned about right now in the age of Covid and a tough business environment?". I won't look back.

I was 48 and my Board if Directions forced me out. I had debated early retirement for several years. It has been the best year of my life with family, hiking, running, road tripping etc. screw the pandemic I have seen more in the last year than I had in the last 30 years of working. I was one who tolerated a extremely high stress job, glad I got out when I did.

I don't think age is so much the thing but personal HEALTH. My husband is a 36 yr old disabled vet with a multitude of health issues and was forced into retirement 2 years ago. I am 35 with a probable MS diagnosis. All the things we dreamed of doing before our health took a turn are unlikely to happen or impossible. Now we face raising two children while trying to maintain as much of our mobility and health as we can. Never count on being healthy in the future. Enjoy life now, save for the future and retire when you can/want to.

If you are diagnosed with MS ask your Dr about Capaxone. My sister (now 60) was diagnosed 20 years ago at 40 years old and that drug has drastically slowed the advance of MS damage. They started as daily injection, now 3 per week. Very little MS related degradation overthe years. My sister has great quality of life and very happy with the results of treatment with that drug. Hope this helps.

There is nothing sadder to me than the person who is lost without their 9-5 grind! My father-in-law worked for many years as a VP of Sales for Coca-Cola and was given a “golden parachute” to take his toys and go home in his late fifties when his local bottler was sold to corporate. The man spent the next 15-years rattling around his house with a beer in his hand and lost as could be! The only thing he knew was the daily corporate battle and had no outlet of any kind to fulfill his life once he left work! What a shame - what a waste of your time on this earth......😕

It's not a matter of retiring when you can afford it, but rather making sure you can afford to do it when you retire. Remember this important thing, It's not as important how much money you have. It a matters more how much you owe. Pick your date and set your plan to be debt free by that date. If you do that your operational budget should be handled easily with just your Social Security. That way you can spend your savings on fun stuff. Anybody who retires and gets bored that only means you doing "retired" wrong. The only good reason to work is because you need the money. You don't need the work, you need the money. Quit working when you no longer need the money. It's just that simple. 5 years retired and I'm having the time of my life. That said, knowing what I know now, I would have retired at age 55 instead of age 62.

Josh, It is hard to pull that retirement trigger and easy to fall into the “One more year syndrome “ - just keep working because it doesn’t require you to take any action. What people need to realize is TIME becomes the limiting factor, not how much money you need for retirement. If you are in your 60’s you only have 10 to 15 “active years” left when you can travel and do all the highly physical things on your bucket list. Every year you put off retirement is taking away a year from your active years.... Many people continue working thinking they have plenty of TIME left, and never have any “active years” for their retirement....

You know, when I first met my financial advisor a little over 10 years ago, he told me I could retire at 55 based on what my financial situation was at the time. (I'm in my late 40's now). I didn't believe him back then because I thought he didn't factor in certain things like the uncertainty of social security or the possibility of living 30+ years in retirement with a possible nursing home stay at some point. Today, retiring at 55 seems like a realistic possibility based on my current financial situation. I'm also more motivated to retire earlier than I originally planned for many of the same reasons that you covered in this video (i.e. politics, realistic life expectancy and quality of life). We don't know how long we are going to live or how long we will remain healthy enough to enjoy life. These are things that I didn't really think about until recently. Thanks for the video!
@serom1021
@serom1021 3 года назад
I actually think this is also speaking to the 35 year old. I'll be that age this year and I find that things like this motivate me to save a bit more now to be able to afford to retire a bit younger say more the 55-59 age range and be able to still enjoy a bit more of retirement life before hitting the age where people tend to slow down and not be able to do as much.

They were making so many changes at work, which were not in the long term employees favor, that it was no longer worth the effort. When I evaluated everything, I came to realize that all of our accomplishments were being chipped away, little by little with every new manager that they brought on board. Just this year, I heard from some of my former co-workers, that they stopped matching the employees retirement fund, and eliminated all rate increases, all of while they are going ahead with new construction. Well now the employees know where they are getting the money to proceed with the new construction. But they continue to complain about 'not having any money.' Ms. L. Churchill

The problem I see is that gap between 62 and 65. You can retire early SS at 62 but you can't get Medicare coverage until 65. So for that 3 years if you need good health care it will be expensive because you may well have to pay out more for health care coverage until you can get that Medicare coverage. For me that's what I worry most about. I can continue to keep my employer's health care plan, which is better than most anything else I can find (its far better than Obama Care and Trump Care), for the wife and I but at a cost of $1200 a month. That's a lot. $14,400 a year and over three years $43,200 out of pocket just for coverage. I got to figure out how to bridge that gap (62-65) inexpensively. The wife and I have health problems so going without health coverage is not an option.

That’s 1K a month or 12K a year, that extra 12K puts me in Europe for at least a month every winter. Why o why would I pull the pin now? What, short of getting hit by a bus, is going to stop me from enjoying Europe if I wait 2 years? If I am able to walk, I’m still good to go.
