Many Toronto asylum seekers relocated to churches and hotel rooms

Many asylum seekers in Toronto that have been stranded on the streets of Toronto for weeks have been relocated, some going to two churches and others to temporary hotel rooms. Some have decided to continue staying outside citing hygiene and comfortability concerns in the churches.

Woke socialist policies are destroying the middle classes. This is why there is mass migration from liberal strongholds and where are they going?? To red states texas, Florida, alberta and midwest where there are less taxes, less regulations and a cheaper cost of living. I wouldn't say this is a capitalist system if the gains are privatized and the losses are socialized. Crony capitalism at best.

torontocharlz, Canada should not have extended the invitation if there's no room at the INN. Others came and were given housing, well recieved and welcome as part of the Canadian community. I do agree Canada needs to first take care of Candians before immigrants but who's to blame?

I support housing and welcoming immigrants. However, we as a country need to make sure born and raised Canadians including the poor, neurodivergent and disabled are able to afford housing, food etc too. If you serve newcomers a lot more while neglecting everyone else, you’ll build resentment. Disabled and working poor Canadians in particular are struggling to get by. Disabled people can’t even get married without losing benefits and they don’t even get paid liveable amounts while they have to jump through a million hoops to get barely any benefits. Just to say, Canada has its own issues that need to he addressed.

@piku5637, I totally agree. Charity begins at home. Take care of your own first! As an immigrant myself, I have nothing against immigration and refugees, but I do believe that the first bite on an ever shrinking pie should be given to local born Canadians and long time Canadian citizens, those who yes, may have fallen on hard times, but have contributed to the Canadian economy in the past, paid taxes and paid their dues to Canadian society. If there are not even enough resources for our own Canadian citizens who are in dire need of help, why keep taking in others, only to subject them to more misery and despair, and where they will feel poorer and neglected even more than from where they came from. Canada should not bite more than it can chew just to pretend to be generous and to look good in the international community.

If you've actually MET some of them, you may ACTUALLY find out that some of them don't WANT that support/help because many times, the kind of support and help that is available to them, comes with caveats and strings; whereas, if they CHOOSE to remain homeless, they can enjoy "pure and absolute freedom". You can't claim to be FOR freedom but then want to confine those who are homeless to the strings and caveats that support comes with.

There is a reason for that. These new arrivals are under the jurisdiction of the federal government and they tend to act. The more long term homeless often struggling with other things are under the jurisdiction of the provincial government and they dont care. It is a bit of a double standard though.

Surprisingly a lot. I was a young teacher early in my career when I taught in Nigeria for two years many moons ago. People were so kind...I was in northeast Nigeria...pretty dangerous nowadays but the people were beautiful...I got malaria...people really checked in...very kind. In fairness it might be different now but I have good memories.

Look around at other countries… especially in Europe.. look what the policies on refugees, and asylum seekers has done to their cities… Paris, Stockholm, London, and more, are now dealing with violence, no go zones, grooming gangs… no respect for law enforcement… WAKE UP!!! I recently looked into booking a hotel room in the gta. There were barely any rooms, they tried putting me 1 to 1.5 hours outside the city. I looked one holiday Inn that was 200 a night, and the entire lobby is full of families living in it because of a lack of rooms. The rooms apparently have been destroyed over n over again, so they have to make them unavailable to fix them. Who is paying for that? I found that despicable.

Because it's different funding streams and different needs. There's money for homeless, shelters, services to find housing and enjoyment, mental health and addiction treatment, a self care allowance, welfare, etc. Asylum seekers get different funding and need different services like language services, work permit assistance, etc.

Canada needs a definitive long term plan for refugees and asylum seekers. We simply can't keep taking people in willy nilly without allocated funds and prebuilt infrastructure to support them. Considering that Canadians are suffering from a severe lack of affordable housing and food prices keep increasing I wonder why non citizens are prioritized over our elderly and vulnerable? I personally believe that basic housing is a human right however that right has to apply to everyone or not at all. When you start giving our poor and vulnerable free hotel rooms, food, and post secondary education then you can worry about helping non Canadians.

Why ? They are already helping homeless people. Where will they sleep on benches and only two to 4 bathrooms, no showers or place to eat . Why not gvt land and put tents like they do in others countries called Refugees camp ?

Or why not empty cruise ships , maybe some would wish to go back home as no money you know in Canada , no appts . We Canad6are out if we don't pay rent and Rental board are fast in that in Quebec

From reading through some of the comments, it is quite evident how many of you have ACTUALLY met and talked to homeless people and/or people who are in homeless shelters and how many of you haven't. Y'all need to spend more of your time, volunteering at said homeless shelters, serving a hot meal for the homeless, etc., and talking to them, and getting to know at least SOME of them. Then you will learn why some of our homeless Canadians CHOOSE to be and REMAIN homeless as they have "pure and absolute freedom". You can't tell me that you are FOR freedom without you having gotten to know who some of these homeless Canadians are.
