So many interesting characteristics here. I've been considering a wagon vice, but I like the versatility of the twin screws model you've employed, and Veritas makes great stuff (e.g. those Bench Pups)! I also like the thought put into the middle insert. Very functional in a number of different ways. And your mallet holder! Well played! My only issue is the level of shop envy you trigger in this video. Beautiful space.
@999Eikes
@999Eikes Год назад
Ah thanks for the kind words! Honestly, I chose the twin screw vise partly due to the intimidation factor of installing a wagon vise, haha… that and the twin screw allows for stock to be clamped along its width for easy sawing off the side of the bench, which has been awesome 🤘

BTW, I, for one, would love to see anything regarding your work with the axe, including technique, maintenance, etc. As I get older, I foresee doing smaller work more often, including spoons and other utensils. I know little about how to use them, so if you're ever so inclined, you'd have at least one guaranteed LIKE.

Fist video, first project. Well you are far better as a beginner than myself and many others with some years on us. Beautiful work and a very inspiring workbench. Build by you, for you and more of us should do that instead of following the norm. Again, great job and I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Lovely job mate. I'm about to embark on my own Moravian workbench out of reclaimed Merbau from some decks we removed at home. Very exciting and I can't wait to get started! Cheers and thanks for sharing, Dave (Sydney, Aust)

Dude! I’ve just finished mine here in Melbourne from reclaimed merbau and jarrah decking. Got an oak slab for the bench top, some Oregon and meranti found it’s way into it and a couple of cherry bow ties. Been the best thing I’ve ever made, I fumed it so it’s dark and substantial, finished it off with BLO and shellac…..it’s a love affair, me, the Moravian and a golden dawn.
@deldridg
@deldridg 2 месяца назад
@@rossmcleod7983 Well done Ross! It sounds beautiful - almost too nice to use. You have certainly chosen some lovely timbers and the cherry bow ties must really set it off. Now I really am jealous and would love to see it. I have to admit that I've been distracted of late, by trivial matters such as completing our house renovation, driving kids to endless sporting fixtures and starting up a new business etc. However, our newly renovated house has a 100 sq m garage which I'm setting up to be what will hopefully be an effective woodworking space (may even house a couple of vehicles and a motorbike). Making this workbench remains in my plan (though unlikely to be anywhere near as special as yours) and I'm glad you reminded me how much I need one. If you find yourself wanting to make another workbench (can you have too many??), have a look at the "Pedulla Studio - A new style of workbench" on YT. That should get the heart rate up. Cheers from Sydney - Dave

This isn't a workbench, this is high end furniture. Gently used(one of a kind character), you could get a fortune for this bench. Designers would kill for this bench! You should get pics out to the home designers in your area and beyond. You may have to crate it and ship it, but somebody out there will be glad to pay for the opportunity to provide this (gently used) workbench to their client.

Nice. I, too, have have recently built a Moravian style workbench. Mine doesn't look nearly as good as yours, as it's built from glued up construction lumber. It serves it's purpose well, though, as a lathe stand. The modular design does fit the needs of an apartment dweller, doesn't it?

Oh nice! Post a video of it, I'd love to check it out!
@karlio3368
@karlio3368 Год назад
I didn't even take build photos. Built on the cheap, constrained by the lengths of dimensional construction SPF lumber. Basically scrounged materials. Only dollars spent were on glue and a Harbor Freight pull-saw. Found a set of Aldi chisels for the joinery. Made a mallet, also from scrounged material.

Nice workbench really enjoyed ur video! Do u have the criss cross support on your face vise? If so how have you found it being on the slight angle? You seem to be the only guy on RU-vid to do this and was wanting to do the same thing. All the best and keep those videos coming!
@999Eikes
@999Eikes 7 месяцев назад
The criss-cross at a slight 15 degree angle has not been an issue at all for me. It bogs down a bit when the jaws are open past 6”, but I rarely do that

Beautiful work! I am also working on a Moravian style bench of similar size (small shop). Quick question. The legs look like they are at different angles. You mentioned that the leg vise end is pitched at 15 degrees. Is it the same angle on the tail vise end? It could be that the appearance of a different pitch is just camera perspective. Hoping I can make something that is 10% of the quality and beauty of your work. Thanks.
@999Eikes
@999Eikes Год назад
Good eye, it looks slightly different because the chop of the leg vise is not quite 15 degrees. However, the leg set behind the chop it is at a mirrored angle with the tail vise leg set (or should be darn close)

Hi, it looks v nice . I do have a question though, would you have preferred to move the legs further apart? (I do realise you may have do this at one end for the twin screw end vice)😊
@999Eikes
@999Eikes 7 месяцев назад
Yea, I tried my best to push the legs out as far as possible. Currently the right leg is almost right up against the twin screw vise screw when closed. Ideally the workbench would have been a bit longer and that would help a bit more with stability, but I couldn’t afford the space.. it’s not a bad size as is, but I’d prefer a bit longer for sure
@benconstruct
@benconstruct 6 месяцев назад
Hi Sean-only just realised you Ve left out the cross mortise & tenon, (short ways on the bench), any reason or did you think it unnecessary with the strong maple 🍁 worktop?
@999Eikes
@999Eikes 6 месяцев назад
@@benconstruct good question. I’ve actually got a mahogany through tenon at the top of the legs that runs perpendicular to the table length that the tabletop rests on, and I’ve also got a dovetailed stretcher right at the bottom of the legs under the shelf that also runs perpendicular. Not too bad for stability, but should have probably done another in the middle for extra rigidity.
@benconstruct
@benconstruct 6 месяцев назад
@@999Eikes oh so you didn’t do the bridle joint & turned it into a full mortise. With hard wood legs, should work 👍. I Ve also wondered if that would n’t improve things, but was thinking more along the lines of adding shoulders to each side to give it more strength. (The one I am working on is only out of spruce -yellow pine type wood, but was going to use oak for that. )

Ok I found this interesting... but I don't find a $5 lamp sold by idea cheap at $18. It doesn't matter if it's nothing to your budget, it's a rip off. Don't misconstrued this as an insult to your, I just hope people begin to see corporate greed and price gouging. If we all take action then they will either stop it or suffer the consequences. This isn't about us that can afford these things, it's about the poor that are increasingly shut out of a standard lifestyle.
