Maple Leaf Rag - Scott Joplin

This video and the other I'm posting is for my wonderful online friends who have encouraged me to put more of my own playing out there. You'll hear a lot of trip-ups and some of the keys on my piano do not play, but I definitely think I got in the mood for playing these two. I hope you enjoy it and please go easy on me, it's not meant to be a professional/representative performance.

Very nice performance! My Beckwith looks a lot like your piano though yours is in far worse shape, I hope you'll be able to get it restored at some point because I imagine it would sound wonderful! I like the octave runs you did in this, based on Scott Joplin's 1916 Connorized piano roll I assume? Also I didn't get this in my notifications weirdly enough.
@rowanbelt3612
@rowanbelt3612 2 месяца назад
Thank you! Unfortunately chances are it will never get restored for several reasons, but I might have the ability to do some minor repairs to get all the notes playing at least. Some of the hammers are so loose that they do not hit the right strings. I wanted to at least document the piano online in case it is destroyed or otherwise lost in the future. Yes I did get some inspiration from the Connorized roll, and also a lot from Eubie Blake and Richard Zimmerman, as well as a few of my own inventions (although of course my own creativity derives from that of others!) Sorry I forgot to reply to your email. I will soon.
@PiotrBarcz
@PiotrBarcz 2 месяца назад
@@rowanbelt3612 It is reallllllly far gone. Though repairs like at least regulating the action, tuning it, leveling the keys and other things that are all part of normal piano maintenance will do a real number on the quality of the music you can produce with it ;) Also no worries about the email!
@rowanbelt3612
@rowanbelt3612 2 месяца назад
You're right. My primary goal is to get some of the hammers repinned. I can live with all sorts of problems but when you play a C and the hammer hits C# it makes everything sound awful. This sort of problem has started to become very serious in the range of notes Bb4-F#5. I think it is partially because as the hammers get loose, they start to hit the neighboring hammers which loosens them as well.
@PiotrBarcz
@PiotrBarcz 2 месяца назад
@@rowanbelt3612 Yeah, the center pins are walking out and the hammers are bobbling side to side. It's a very irritating problem, especially when the hammer moves sideways and gets stuck between strings of neighboring notes.

@rowanbelt3612
@rowanbelt3612 19 дней назад
Thank you so much for your kind words :) My piano says on the plate "Henricks Piano Co. Pittsburgh PA", but I find this confusing as to my knowledge Henricks was just a retailer and didn't make their own pianos. Also, I know that they went out of business in the early years of the Depression. My best guess is around 1926 or so. How about yours?

This is so cool! I play the maple leaf rag all the time, but without those cool embellishments. I was wondering though how did you learn to do those? Like is it based in music theory or just fiddling around? Sorry I know I sound stupid but I was just curious
@rowanbelt3612
@rowanbelt3612 18 дней назад
Thanks so much! You don't sound stupid at all, that's a great question. To be honest, I am not the greatest at improvisation. I easily get lost and mess up if I try and play things too far outside of the box. Pretty much, I just know the song very well so that I can make embellishments and get back on track without thinking about it too hard. You want to have a very good sense of where you are rhythmically and harmonically so you can stay solid. After that, having good hand-ear coordination is very helpful. I think experimentation is too. A lot of the ornaments I play similarly every time because one time I did something randomly and liked how it sounded. I've played this piece for about 13 years at this point! Finally, I'd recommend checking out Richard Zimmerman's performances...he was a great inspiration to me. I hope this rambling response is helpful...let me know if you have any other questions!
