Maplewood is an animated film that blends 2D and 3D art together by bringing hand-drawn 2D characters and backgrounds into a vibrant and colorful 3D world.
In a forest of animals with everyday lives just like humans, a humble bear’s peaceful cabin life is disturbed by a hyperactive human girl that needs help finding her way home.

Thanks! This short has some of the first rigs I've ever did by myself from scratch! They were super jank and not terribly pleasant to animate with, but I made them work.

@@joshuafountain Nope! Way too much work would be involved with that and I'm happy with what's here, warts and all. It represents a very specific, special time in my life. But if an opportunity ever presented itself to turn what I have here into something new, I wouldn't be opposed.

your style brought back some amazing memories. it reminds me of a pop-up book my dad had when he was younger and used to read it to me. it was my favorite book. I absolutely loved this.

I really like the art style! The hunter's walk could've had some more weightiness to it. Perhaps a bit of harshness to his movement could've served to distinguish him from the otherwise bouncy happy world, and make him stand out narratively as a disruption to that. The posing and composition is very effective though, especially 5:05 is very powerful!

I thought it was gonna be a cute story of a little girl looking for her "human" dad. (The plot twist would be that the bear is her father but he sometimes acts like one: big, hairy, gruffy etc.) Either way, this was a cute story, I love how smooth the animation is. 😊🧡

Thanks! It's not Blender though, this was made in Maya using Maya's default Toon outlines and the Hardware Renderer.

A really good work of art. Seems like a lot of work and soul was put into it. But there is a general lack of technical polish everyone here overlooks. I hope You will make a refined version of this someday. I'm sure Your talent grew up in 3 years.

I’ve never seen such a unique use of animation. It’s simply amazing to me! I love the mixture of 3D and 2D and just how everything looks so thick and warm. I love just how pleasant it all just feels. Keep up the amazing work!^^

If you like the 3D and 2D blend, I would recommend checking out Bigtop Burger, its really funny and beautifully animated. There are 3 episodes out as of riding this and I love them more and more as time passes.

The turtle scene isn't just a fun comedy shot, but is actually a demonstration of her sheer prowess. The big guy at the end stopped not out of the kindness of his heart. He is simply aware of that fact, and feared for his dear life lest he suffered the same fate as the turtle had he continued his aggression. Truly a subtle masterpiece.

I remember seeing this exhibited at MAST and going to check for it on youtube only to see that it had 6 views. I'm so glad this got the attention it deserved because it was easily one of my favorites in the same exhibition where everyone was floored by Satina. Easily one of the best nights I spent in cambridge.

This is absolutely amazing! I love the story and the animation, I really enjoy how fluid the animation is and how well you can see the expressions of the characters through not only their facial expressions but their body language as well. My only question is whatever happened to the child's dad at the end? Other than that though, well done!!!

Lots of coordination with my composer. Use timecodes, scratch tracks, and decide on a "picture lock" in terms of timing so the final score can be made while you're still working.

I love when animators are able to convey a touching story without any dialogue, speech is usually a minor factor in any story, and it’s interesting to see someone figure out how to make it work without that major element.
