Mar. 13: Talking about Deer Sign - How to Use it | Bowhunting Whitetails w/ Bill Winke

Jordan and I went for a shed hunt and decided to combine our walk with some discussions about deer hunting. We got off on a few topics, but the main points were related to various kinds of deer sign and which ones were most useful when trying to pattern a specific buck. We talked about a lot of other stuff that we couldn't fit into this episode, so we will likely come up with another "Walking & Talking" episode very soon.

Hard to believe it's been that long ago Bill, but it's been fun watching your kids grow up through the years. That beginning at Midwest Whitetail was what I will say revolutionary and that current conditions and semi-live approach was really ground breaking. Thanks for the humility and great insights, not trend based, but truth from the ground. Thanks for all you provide.

I was never able to connect my hunting passion to any of my 3 kids. Fortunately My 13 year old grandson has taken to it like crazy. We are spending time together in the woods like you and your daughter. It is such a wonderful thing to share with kids. Similar to what has already been said. There is not a single deer on earth that I would prefer over the time I get with my grandson. Keep your daughter close and hopefully she will carry on your legacy.

Hello Bill. Your comments about the knowledge and lore we grew up with, really struck a chord with me. I started hunting whitetails in 1966 with my father and uncles in the swamps of Jackson County WI. The stories and knowledge they passed on to me helped but may have led me in the wrong direction. I learned by walking and reading the land as you have. Whitetails are mysterious and I agree that putting yourself in a position where they exit and enter works. Looking for funnels are great spots for tree stands. Putting out ground blinds in the spring/ summer makes them invisible to the deer. Shot last years buck at 10 yds and they had no clue I was there. Not running an atv and being very careful on entering and exiting the property is gold. I really enjoy your conversations with your daughter. Keep up the good work.

Love the reference to" midwest whitetail " days. I was fortunate to spend years hunting and scouting with my daughters so I know you have to be cherishing the days spent afield. It seems as if your grooming her to be the next female role model for all the young women coming in to our sport., like Candy Kiske and Tiffany Lakosky, look forward to your posts every week and learn a little from each episode. Tell Jordon to look to Prana for pants designed mainly for hikers but are flexible fabric and very comfortable. made right on par with Sitka and Kuiu. Thanks again for all the content

Jordan, regarding your pants issues: you will have to buy men's sizes, but buy Propper brand BDU ripstop trousers. They have pull tabs on each side to cinch the waist tight, or you can use a belt. Light enough to wear all summer with the legs bloused in the boot tops to keep out ticks, and in hunting season just wear whatever base layers you need under them to keep warm. I have lots of multiflora rose to walk thru & they hold up pretty well. Dont buy any other brand the quality isn't all that good as most of the BDUs are now made for the "surplus" market & the quality isn't all that great.

Lol Bill I too remember the days that rub size was a big thing. Now I look at the height of a rub as somewhat of an indicator of the age of the buck using it. I’ve seen sign post rubs with heavy wear from 16” off the ground to 4’ off the ground. This year I’m going to use ted millers horizontal rub strategy with scotch pine. Dan

I still love big rubs BUT I really get excited about big tracks near them and how far up the tree the tines are hitting. Yes, small bucks will rub an existing big rub but I’d lean to at least a mature if not one with an attitude doing the initial tree damage. Also, I usually see these rubs in areas where I know a big buck frequents along with all the other sign that lets me know something interesting is going on. All pieces of the puzzle. Post season scouting is my second fav time of the year add in a few found sheds and you’ve got yourself a party. I believe the comment was from the late 80’s Midwest Whitetail days. ??

@bill-winke
@bill-winke 4 месяца назад
Good point. Yes, I have also read studies that if you shoot the doe when he was a fawn, he is much less likely to leave the next fall (as if she starts the dispersal process - or nature just knows). I am not 100% sure that research has been verified, however.

Joking aside, how I would have benefited from walking and talking in the woods with an experienced hunter like Bill. My hunting took just as long to figure it out, maybe we learned more, not sure. I agree, its the terrain that matters. I know we are talking deer hunting but learn from your Dad Jordan, some day you will look back at these and tell your kids all about grandpa.

The NE trackers Maine, NH, Vt etc. drag marks are akey, also the width of the body based on tracks, some can even guesstimate the weight of the deer. Many have been pretty close! It’s impressive, but that’s how they hunt their deer so they learn that over time. Pretty cool stuff.

You are right Bill, a lot of mis information out there that trends the typical hunter's way of hunting. I guess, I'm just not that typical hunter. I use trail cams for inventory prior to my limited bowhunting season, not for patterning deer. I do this on purpose as I really enjoy the chase and the anticipation of that chase and all the unknowns this type of hunting entails. I tend to place cameras in pinch points pre my hunt, review the photos the day before my first hunt and hunt the pinch spots I know preferred deer travel especially during the pre rut and the rut. While I have shot some decent bucks, truth be told, I have never shot "the big one" that I got on camera, or hunted a specific buck but I have seen them on the hoof, and and I like it this way. To each his own. To me whatever it takes to keep hunting interesting, exciting and fun like when I was a kid, the better. Regardless of what information used or style of hunting, I say dream big!!
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 4 месяца назад
I agree 100%. I normally only know which part of the property a shooter buck is living in and little more than that. Sometimes I can get a feel for his bedding areas based on the direction he approaches the cameras, but I don't want to know too much because I still want to be excited and surprised when he shows up. But I have had good luck shooting the bucks I am after hunting that way. However, and this is the great equalizer, I can hunt 50 straight days too if I want to. That makes a huge difference. Good luck.

Thanks good video Bill .Also the MSU Deer Lab TV just put a new Buck bedding / Rut timing study out that very much throws in the face of what most think bucks bed like and specifically what hunters think of as same spot / bedding . They seem to not use the same beds or small area such as a specific point or place on the map . Good watch as it will change the reasonings and what hunters think they are hunting as beds or bedding areas.
@bill-winke
@bill-winke 4 месяца назад
I saw that but there are many variables that will skew their results. Age being one of them. I am going to get some cell cameras and do my own study this fall. I bet I find different results. Again age is a huge factor in buck behavior as older bucks act way different from younger bucks.

@bill-winke 4 месяца назад
We need to hunt it, but it is right below two big bedding areas and up the draw from a primary feeding area. It would be an awesome spot for an afternoon or morning hunt during the rut, but sneaking out would be tough following an afternoon hunt. Well, last year it wouldn't have been because the deer never left the timber with all the acorns. If I had it to do again, I would have hunted it last year given how easy it would have been to sneak out through that standing cornfield in the bottom that the deer weren't using.

We have a lot of routes we take depending on where we are going, but in general, access is hard (physically) in this country. We don't see many beds along the roads. Most are up on the ridges and the points. Good luck.

The old Midwest Whitetail’s from like 2011, 2012. Wasn’t that Drew that said that? “It’s time to watch Midwest Whittail!”

Midwest whitetails intro like everyone else said? lol I think height of rub does have to do with age. As long as it's not a tree they can bend and they're standing level or lower. Really high rubs, in those situations, have to be taller body and/or large rack. Of course really big bucks don't have to rub high, but little bucks just can't. When the top of the rub is chin high, there's a good one around (or you have elk lol). That water hole looks ultra prime! Did you guys ever get a sit over it?

We never sat over that. We need to this year. It does look like the perfect rut spot. Chin high?! I have never seen one more than about sternum high. You do have elk! Good luck.

I think it is well beyond that point. They never fixed the roof when it caved so all the wood is now rotten (and stinks of raccoon).

Only thing that comes to mind is "Its time to watch the Muppets" and the song at the start of the show but I don't think your daughter would have ever seen that at least not on TV.

High rubs are still a thing. Makes sense for an older bigger buck would make those vs a 1 or 2 year old.
@bill-winke

Yes, but far from foolproof as some bucks rub with their heads more upright and others rub with their heads down so you have to take the sign with a grain of salt. Good luck.
