Thanks for another piece of audiophile history.That's a beauty. My son gave me a Marantz 2220b. The corner was bent, the lights were green but it sounded great. I replaced the lamps with cool blue LEDs, replaced the vellum paper and bought a new faceplate from vintage hifi and it looks like a museum piece. At first it had that purple look like yours and it was because I only had access to 24 lb vellum paper. I added another layer and it is now perfect. My son's good deed was rewarded. Somebody he barely knew gave him a 2285b black face European model in great cosmetic condition. I replaced the burned out lamps and the vellum, corrected the reversed polarity new AC plug and he has a nice looking unit that has a left channel hiss in the pre amp and power amp. He may sell it as is.

Thanks Mike! I'll need to check out the vellum.

Thanks for sharing this beauty with us. The wood case really completes the beautiful look of the receiver, as I have several early H.H. Scott vacuum tube components ('60s era) that are transformed visually in the same handsome way, especially those with a gold face. Looking forward to the videos mentioned coming down the pike.

Happy Anniversary! The one thing about Marantz is it is consistent. No too many really disappointing models. You don't expect receivers to compete with high end seperates, but they pretty much give yow what you can reasonably expect. Marantz I don't think ever had a house sound that was wild and inaccurate like where some other companies ventured in the 1980s like Pioneer and Technics (talking about their speakers back then mostly). Saul Marantz founded and headed the company for a long time. He bowed out around the time when transistors were taking over versus tube equipment. In his his swan song statement he said "I don't know anything about transistors, I think we have been making very good amplifiers and tuners for years using tubes. I think tubes have the better sound, but people want transistor."

He knew his strengths it seems. I would love to find some Marantz tube gear.

I heard the Marantz model 7 preamp and model 8 power amp (both tubed), around a handful of times at some guys house. The midrange was very smooth and natural, the bass was thunderous, when called on to be. His highs were a little rolled off because his speakers were that way. These Marantz tube models were re-released by Marantz not that many decades ago, and Sid Smith (the guy who designed the originals) over 6 decades ago, was the guy they let do his thing again. The re-releases were expensive, but the originals are very expensive on the used market, because they are legendary. Most of the used tube Marantz here, ends up in the hands of Asian buyers, I am told. The original Marantz tube models had a green colored cage, and shortly after they went to a brown color cage. One of the McIntosh preamps back then copied the Marantz 7, and one guy said the only difference inside between the two, were the bumble bee (black and yellow) parts inside the Marantz. I think the original Marantz came with Telefunken smooth plate tubes; which are very expensive on the secondary market, and themselves are legendary. More legendary still; the Marantz mode 9 mono tube amps.

My humble 2017 Rotel RB 1582MKII puts out 200W/channel into 8 ohms, 250 W/channel into 6 ohms and 300 W/channel into 4 ohms. It had it's 6th birthday last month. Those old 70's receivers were junk even when I recall them being new. Dream on mate. @@stereoniche

Very nice looking. It'd be good if you could add a factor for build quality, realizing it'd be a bit subjective. It'd also be nice to see the internals, with the case off.

That thing is gorgeous. Curious whether you could compare how it sounds in relation to the other receivers you have.......

It is a challenge because I rotate speakers around so often, but in general, I find Marantz to be somewhere between a Sansui and a Yamaha. Sansui being more warm on average and Yamaha being more clinical/accurate.

From a "visual collectible" nostalgic curiosity? Of course not. I in fact have two rooms full of these however they do NOT sound good even today with full recaps and restoration and didn't sound good in the 1970's. @@stereoniche

They have gotten rather expensive, but keep your eye out locally, you may find a deal. But Superscope is quite good as well, enjoy it.

That is a beautiful receiver. I have a question. When a receiver has an optional wood case, do you take the metal case off and put it in the case, or does the metal outer case stay on inside the case?
@stereoniche
@stereoniche 11 месяцев назад
In short, no, the metal case stays on. In the days of tubes, many manufacturers (like Fisher) sold them without cases as they were often put into cabinets that were sold separately. Barzilay, for example, is a well known cabinet company that sold beautiful cabinets (large consoles) that were designed to be "loaded" with audio gear and speakers. So the gear would slide into place and the internals were hidden from view (or touching). If the buyer did not plan to put them into a console type cabinet, they would then opt for the individual wood cabinet. Once the transition to Solid State completed around 1965, manufacturers more often included a metal cover, however, they continued providing the optional wood cabinets as most consumers probably still expected them to be displayed in their living rooms. So, to fully answer your question, if the unit came with a metal case and an optional wood cabinet, the metal cabinet typically would stay on and then slid into the wood cab where it was secured from the bottom with screws. This is the case for Marantz models, for example.

@@stereoniche Thank you so much for this answer. Back in the day I saved up all my money as a teenager and got a stereo set up... I got a Kenwood KA-3700 amp and a Sony PS-T1 turntable and some house branded "Sonic" 2 way speakers. I always wanted to have the wood sides/or case for my amp, but back in the day- I could not afford the extra $30. Those Items that I bought back then were the least expensive models, but the turntable had a strobe and pitch control, and the whole thing sounded great. I felt like a millionaire when I got that. Thanks for this channel.
