In this vintage audio video I will show the repair and restoration of my Marantz 2385 solid state stereo receiver. This receiver had several different issues to fix and is more then 40 years old. Like so many older pieces of stereo equipment this Marantz 2385 had been put aside many years ago and was in need of both repair and restoration.

I restored one of these awhile back -good points about the cleaning. I'm restoring a different marantz now and come across an issue that I wanted to mention for anyone restoring a Marantz. The one I'm restoring the previous tech put in the wrong transistors in the preamp and not suprising they are now leaking. Some transistors such as 2sa2911 have different versions with different gain characteristics . They have R,S and T under the 2sa2911 number as per data sheet. Use the ones mentioned in service manual. The tech probably thought they were all the same and put in R's which are lower gain and now I'm having to replace all those with S versions.

I like the way how you do the restoration of a vintage receiver. I hope we have somebody here in the Philippines who is good enough to restore my old Pioneer A-9 amplifier which first came out in 1981 and I bought it in Philadelphia on the same year. It broke down in 2014 and since then I have not brought it to the repairman for restoration. I believe there's a lot to do with my amplifier cause it burnt out while I was playing music in 2014. I did turn off my amplifier immediately when the music stop cause I smelled burning inside it.

Thank you for your kind words. Your A-9 can probably be repaired. google "vintage stereo repair" or "vintage audio repair" in your area. There is probably someone in the Philippines that can help you. Good Luck!

Roger Dopp came to the same conclusion you did about separated, active crossovers, and tube buffer stages/preamps. NAD 1600/1700 do it for me as far as pre amps go and don’t get hot!

Nice video. One thing I've round that works very well for cleaning face plates and knobs, especially on the brown gunk these get, is a paste made of baking soda and a bit of water. Just rub it on with your fingers or use a tooth brush. Just rinse it well.

Is there a course or apprenticeship kind of thing where people can learn the ins and outs of this? I'm in the Los Angeles area, and thinking about trying to do a restoration business here because of the hit or miss restoration guys here charging minimum 3x of what I would think is fair. I get it, leases on buildings have to be paid and so do house notes and all the other usual bills, but more than once did I pay a pretty penny and my problems not get fixed. Your channel is inspiring, and I'm pretty sure I can do this stuff... have recapped a board or two in my Marantz 2240 (with no prior knowledge) and it came out good. Thanks for your channel.

Your welcome and thank you for watching. There just are not very many techs still around working on vintage equipment. The techs are getting older and the younger folks are not that interested in learning this trade. More and more folks are left on their own to repair or restore their old vintage audio gear. The good news is that most of the parts and knowledge is out there on the internet, if you do enough research.
@Gabrielishere

@@vintageaudioaddict Yes, i wish I knew someone close by who could maybe shorten my learning curve a bit... I'm definitely interested in keeping this skill set alive. Thanks for replying!

Can someone watching here give me a remote diagnosis? :) I have 30 yo Infinity Modulus speakers and matching sub. The other day our neighbour suggested he does not mind if we crank it up a little bit - and so I did :) I am powering these poor little bookshelves with 2x Audiolab 8200 MB monos (250W continuous, 750W peak each). After some time, one of the speakers sounded scratchy/grainy I I thought ok well done, now it's fucked. The next day, it seemed fine again, but it is not - as soon as the volume gets above a certain threshold, it starts scratching again. The ribbon (?) tweeter looks undamaged, the woofer of the speaker as well, so I am guessing it is old caps on the way out. I am saying this knowing next to nothing about it though. Any opinions? I don't think it is the amps because they are fairly new and have infinite power for these speakers... any suggestions appreciated.
@johnnyg1700
@johnnyg1700 4 года назад
Sounds like you've damaged the speakers by driving them too hard fella. If you hear popping sound more than likely the bass/mid driver gone. If distorted then likely damaged the tweeter.
@Baerchenization
