Join me for evening stroll around Marazion, reputedly Cornwall's oldest town. Perhaps best known for being home to the island castle of St Michael's Mount there is actually much more to the village and is well worth a couple of hours to explore.
In this video we start on the little section of promenade in front of Marazion's main car park. After a brief stroll along the sandy beach, with views of the Mount, we head towards the village.
It's always tricky to decide whether to call Marazion a village or a town. It isn't very big, but it was granted a charter of incorporation as a town by Henry III in 1257. The buildings around the town square are actually quite grand and not really what you would expect in a village. Also, in 2022, to mark the Queen's Jubilee, Marazion town council applied for city status. Funnily enough it wasn't granted!
After heading through the square we take a lane down to the pebbly beach in front of town. This is where you catch the boat to the Mount on medium tides. At the other end of the beach is Marazion's harbour, known as Top Teib. This used to be home to a small fishing fleet but is now where you catch the boat to the Mount on Spring high tides.
Following the coast around from the harbour takes us to Marazion's "secret" beach. Never busy and dog friendly, there is also a good stretch of sand at low tide.
From here it is just a short climb back up to Fore Street and back to the centre of the town...
