Sea Glass and textile Art of St Michael's Mount, Cornwall

I love art and find inspiration from my surroundings here in Cornwall. I have collected sea glass from our local beaches for a while and I wanted to find some way to use some of it, showing off the wonderful patina and colours. There is a huge diversity in shape, texture and colour on our beaches. Some of it is really well-weathered, maybe in the sea for over 40 years!
This project used sea glass as well as Bondaweb (sorry - spelt wrong in the video!), acrylic paint, curtain lining, embroidery threads in many colour, and beads.
To view a St Michael's Mount piece for sale visit our Esty shop: www.etsy.com/u...
Music: 'Manhattan' by Dyalla, 'Lullaby' by Yung Logos both from the RU-vid Audio Library.

Hi Sarah. This is Ms. Toby in Santa Barbara.I love your St. Michaels Mt. It is great.And it's really neat the way you iron it on so you can sew French knots and stuff.Ive done all that kinda piecemeal in my life.But since Im older and can't walk, needing a new hip and knee " you have inspired me to practice, practice , practice.Its Like playing an instrument you gotta practice. I will take my scooter and my art things and go concentrate on my art. Everybody always asks me to but I get lost in feeling sorry for myself.so I WILL CARRY ON . Thank you honey . lots o' love

What a beautiful piece, Sarah! It was fascinating to watch you work and fun to hear you describe the process from conception to finished product. Thank you for sharing. You're making such good use of your time in quarantine! Now I'm curious to know how you will display your work of art. My mom started the tradition of collecting sea glass, and now her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren have all taken up the hobby. We display it around our homes in glass vases to add a bit of color and whimsy. After Covid, when our postponed trip to Cornwall finally happens, I will be collecting sea glass from beaches in Cornwall to bring home and display. Perhaps it'll be from the very beaches you've mentioned. Thanks again for another great video. Bettina from Connecticut

A lovely surprise Sarah. I think you've started something now! Don't be surprised if you get requests for more. There are so many beautiful places from your walks to choose from and with your imagination, well who knows? I also love art and crafty things. My teacher was a Sri Lankan lady who taught me Gold work and stump work. I know what you mean about doing the French knots, very satisfying. (not weird!). Couching is another one I like to do. Its strange as only last night I was going through my threads and beads. Maybe this is a prompt for me to start again. I'm currently into knitting socks which is very addictive, especially with all the different coloured yarns. So Sarah, carry on doing what you are doing - your work is both imaginative and beautiful. PS: I love where Andrew came in and tempted you with that lovely CP and the cheeky smile to go with it.💕

Your work is inspiring me Sarah! Combining painting with embroidery and surface embellishments is such a great idea. I came home from Cornwall with smallish finger shaped stones from Pentire’s rocky shore. They’re calling me now. I think you may have started something for like minded artists. Amazing what you can find buried in the sand on the shore from long lost times. If you are interested there is a YG channel with Nicola White & Sci-finds. Amazing stuff they discover! At the moment though can't discover much at all apart from what's on TV!! Lovely depiction of The Mount. Does this method only work with acrylic paints?
@CornishWalkingTrails
@CornishWalkingTrails 4 года назад
I believe so because the glue on the Bondweb adheres well to the plastic nature of acrylics when it is heated by the iron, maybe gouache would work but I have not tried it. The fabric with the painting applied to it is quite stiff in character. My daughter is doing a textile course and I will ask her! Sarah :)
@kernowarty
@kernowarty 4 года назад
@@CornishWalkingTrails Yes, I can see how acrylics would be best. I mainly use them for my art and I can peel them off my palette after they have dried and they are just a lump of plastic. I know sea glass is quite hard to find down here in West Cornwall because there are so many artists who look for it, along with driftwood. I was wondering if you could make your own in a gem tumbler, not sure if it would smooth out glass like it does stones though.

Hello my fellow walking enthusiasts, sorry I’ve not messaged you in a while I’ve been very unwell for the past six months or so and hence offline. Looking forward to catching up on your vids and releasing a few of my own too! How are things with you?

Cornish Walking Trails Thanks Sarah, it’s left me with disabilities so the nature of our holidays and leisure activities has changed. I can’t walk very well so watching your vids is awesome because I get the experience vicariously through you :)
