By the way, the size of abrasive contained inside slurry is called "grit". Each country has different grit specification so I'm not sure if below grit size suit to your country's spec. #4000(grit size 4000) 3 to 6 micron : usually used just before the final #8000 2 to 4 micron : For diamond pads, this grit size will be the final process #14000 0 to 2 micron : Seldom see in diamond pads, only used for slurry. #60000 0 to 1/2 micron : Same to above.

Would this process work without water and instead using car wax or something similar? I have a marble bathroom floor that has etching and water spots and I'd like to polish it before re-applying sealer. Thanks!

Here in the U.K. we use 240 volt electricity... I just tried this and blew my hat off....

That sander better be plugged into a GFCI outlet.

Great demonstration. What "slurry" did you use? I found some Diamond Slurry Compounds on the internet which had 1/2 micron, 1 micron, 3 micron, and 6 micron. Which would you recommend for repairing light etching and lightly polishing travertine?

Yeah, I agree. Air polisher might be safe in a wet condition, especially if you are going to use much water in this video. We took care not to wet the machine's motor part. (Although this machine said to be waterproof) I've tried not to make crispy surface but it did by this condition and pads. Do you know any good method not to make the marble surface crispy? I think Bianco Carrara tend to be crispy easily.

Before we see any more comments about mixing water and electricity, let's assume he was using a GFCI breaker.

Congratulations and thanks for sharing !. One question: Is it safe to apply water with electric sander? What precautions should be taken to make it work with water safely? Thank You VM!

Most of the orbital sander is designed for dry polishing. Please make sure to confirm the specification for your safety.

You may find a forced rotation dual action polisher more effective such as the FLEX VRG machine
@stonepolishing
@stonepolishing 7 лет назад
Using dual action polisher is interesting idea. At the point I made this experiment, I couldn't find wet polisher with dual action.

Be careful..power tools are useful but we need to follow the safety precautions. I too had dangerous experience with larger polishing machines.

one more think to discuss is what happens with the water suctioned by the sander, if it has one tu suction the dust when sanding wood.? I suppose it goes rhe same path dust goes but that is also a dangerous way for water to get into the machine.

Good point. In many countries, there are regulations not to harm the natural resource by this kind of sludge. In Japan, for home use, we do not have regulation, but for professional use in factory, we need to install filtration system before it discharge to drainageway. This kind of sludge need to dispose as industrial waste and must be collected by qualified operator. As you can imagine, sludge contain diamond, resin , particle of stones, other ingredient consist "abrasive bond". These do not melt into water and won't return to nature.

Thanks for the demo, very useful. Your link is too vague, could not find the machine you used specifically for video. I just bought a Dewalt Variable Speed 5 inch Random Orbit (Orbital) Sander, which is corded. I did not think I could use this with water like you were doing. Would I not get a shock from water mixing with electricity? Are you using a special 'Wet Sander'? I have several white marble tables that got damaged in a house fire. All sooty and stained. Need to polish them up. What sander do I need? What polish do I need? What disk do I need? Diamond? What grit? How many grits total to get a 100% fine polish? Dry or wet sanding? Any special techniques to grind out the soot? Many thanks!

where do you get the abrasive pads that are 220 grit and above? I have never seen anything above 220 at local Home Depot

These days you can buy professional pads through many online store.

I hope you have time and patience to help with my dilemma - I have a really beautiful and now antique marble top table - was my Mother's - the only thing I have from our past - I learned to pull up and walk around this - as did grandchildren to follow. It needs a restoration of - what you demonstrated. Mercy - I can not afford to have a Craftsmand do this and I do not have an Oscellating or Wet Sander - nor the muscles to lift the marble. I use to be able to move one end at a time - not any more :-) - ehhh that age thing! Is there a process - that hand craftsmen used prior to electric sanders? And - even if it takes me days - and a hand sprayer to keep it wet - Could this be accomplished! I have a sander - but I am thinking - at least an orbital sandee (correct - circles - not a sander for up/down wood grain use?) Appreciate any recommendations. Am overwhelmed with projects - long story - would like to accomplish - but - will wait if necessary - to get it right - Oh and I am in a rural area now, w no access to precision craftsmen - Thanks for sharing your work.

Beth Bartlett Thank you for watching my video. Generally, by mechanical polishing, hand polishing machine and diamond polishing pad is used for making shiny surface for marble. Using orbital sander for stone polishing is quite unusual for stone industries. Wet polishing would be easy but these days, dry polishing become popular too. There are several options to restore your marble. 1. Using chemical method 2. Using polishing agent or liquid 3. Using diamond polishing pad To make flat and glossy shiny surface for large area like marble countertop, it would be difficult to achieve without practicing. I would like to recommend to practice before you try out for your precious antique marble top table by other marble pieces. I have uploaded several videos for marble polishing either by hand polishing machine or just by hand. You can also find other video on youtube using chemical method to clean the marble surface. If you prefer mechanical polishing like I've demonstrated, you can purchase hand polishing machine and diamond polsihing pad(resin bond) by online too.

Hi. I have some kind of stone conglomerate window sills that I'd like to restore. You mention, chemical cleaners. What could I use to clean the these (could be marble or even limestone)? And should I use my random orbital sander to polish it? Regards
@stonepolishing
@stonepolishing 7 лет назад
First you need to specify the type of stones. After that, best solution depends on the condition of that stone. For example: Scratches, spot mark, depth of that spot mark, etc These days, most of the problem can be approached both from mechanical polishing way and chemical way. If you are trying for mechanical orbital sander, you need to purchase several abrasive "grit" to make good surface.

i washed my limestone/marble floor with a solution of half vinegar/water. There are spots. How do I remedy this? Thank you
@stonepolishing
@stonepolishing 7 лет назад
Acid like vinegar harm marble/lime stones. So when cleaning your marble floor, just polishing with water or use chemical especially designed for this purpose will be better solution.

Thanks for watching. #220 is quite rough one and I though this kind of rough pad is rather difficult to find. Almost all kind of diamond pad manufacturing company produce higher grit than #220. You also can find them at Amazon or other online store.

Thanks for watching my video. Actually, I didn't use slurry for this video. Just plenty of water and diamond pads. Of course, travertine is soft compared to granite so you can polish using slurry like alumina powder. Size of the slurry abrasive depends on the marble surface condition. If your travertine has no scratches on its surface and just need to re-polish, slurry for finishing for just before the finishing process will fulfill your purpose.
