Marble Tile Installation | Master Bath Remodel (Part 6)

In this video, I install 1,700 pounds of Carrara Marble tile in my new master bathroom. The shower walls, ceiling, and bathroom walls are 4x8, the bathroom floor is 8x20, and the shower pan and niches are 12x12 mosaic sheets. The grout is Whisper Gray.
Over the Winter of 2018, I gutted my tiny master bathroom, moved a wall to double the useable space, and completely rebuilt it from the ground up with high-end finishes like Carrara Marble and a smart shower.

Hello, I just got the same laser. I think is great but I have a question for you. No matter the setting I have it on my laser blinks. In some settings in blink quite often and the far away setting it blinks every 30 ( I think) seconds. Dos yours do that? I don't know if this is normal. It’s Carrera Marble tile from a local tile store. But I don’t recommend natural marble. It’s beautiful when new, but you can’t use “normal” bleach based cleaners so it’s a pain to maintain. I recommend you look for a ceramic tile that looks like marble.

I got them from a local tile store. Not online. I don’t recommend using natural marble, though. It’s too fragile and hard to clean because you can’t use bleach. It’s better to use a ceramic tile that looks like marble, if you want that look. I also recommend dark grout. It’s really hard to keep white grout clean.

@handydadtv

We bought it at The Tile Shop on Rt 35 in Oakhurst. But I wouldn’t recommend natural marble. Granted, it’s beautiful, but you can’t clean the grout with normal detergents or bleach because it could damage the marble. If I could do it again, I would get a ceramic tile that looks like marble.

I looked through the videos you posted regarding the master bath remodel and didn’t see one around the shower glass work. Is there not a video because it’s not that big of a deal😀? Did you have to do custom glass or were you able to find some pre-fabricated glass that fit what you were targeting? Thanks for your work.

Doing my own shower too. Did you use caulk in the shower corners and changes of plane or grout? Any thoughts? Thanks
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 4 года назад
No, I didn't caulk. Two reasons. First, I find it very difficult to keep grout out of the corners. Second, in my experience, caulk never matches the color of the grout so it doesn't look good. With Redgard behind it, I'm not worried about leaks, even if it cracks.

Oh, and you did a beautiful job on your bathroom.
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 4 года назад
The marble is fine, but the grout is discoloring even though I sealed everything twice. And I have a LOT of grout! The real downside is you need to use mild cleaners with marble. No bleach. So it’s hard to get the grout clean. If you use a ceramic tile with a marble look, you can use bleach-based cleaners to keep your grout clean.

Please help. My contractor just installed a beautiful marble tile shower almost exactly like this one, but then he put caulking everywhere. He caulked the whole corner from ceiling to pan (I used a shower pan not tile on the floor), he caulked along the pan inside the shower, he caulked along the ceiling, again on the marble, and along the glass door. Basically he caulked wherever marble is touching glass, acrylic, ceiling, and even marble (the corner). It looks terrible because he chose a gray caulking. At first I thought he should have used white, but now I'm even wondering if this makes sense at all? I don't see caulking in any of the pictures online. Thank you!
@johnnyboy3563
@johnnyboy3563 5 лет назад
I did a bit more research and now I'm not sure if he shouldn't caulk at all or if he just didn't do it properly. His caulking is thick! He said he couldn't cut the hole less than 1/8 of an inch. Except I just saw a vid where the guy uses a caulking tool and scrapes off the excess. Should the caulk just look like grout? Because mine doesn't. It's thick and terrible.
@handydadtv
@handydadtv 5 лет назад
Caulk is often used where two surfaces meet because grout can crack in those areas. I prefer to use it as a last resort, ie. AFTER grout begins to crack, because caulk doesn’t last forever. Water will leech under it and cause mildew so it needs to be replaced periodically (it’s not “one and done”). That said, it’s not necessarily WRONG for your contractor to caulk those high risk areas. It just sounds like a bad caulking job. You can either get him to come back to replace it and do it right, replace it yourself, or live with it. If you decide to do it yourself, DO NOT USE ANYTHING METAL against your marble. It is soft and will scratch. Get a plastic grout removal tool from a paint store.
