Triple wheeling throwing is back in this agateware pottery focused video. I'm using colored porcelain made with mason stains to show you 7 agateware techniques. They are mostly wedging, cutting, and stacking techniques before throwing on the wheel. What's cool is how the different preparations affect the outcome of the swirled marbleized look. Some would also call his process neriage. Marbled clay or rainbow clay pottery never gets old so if you haven't tried it yet you're missing out! This video also shows you 7 tips for how to throw and alter pottery followed by trimming and stamping. Enjoy!

Thank you for your videos. I just found them and I'm learning a lot. I just started marbling my clay and was curious about how to layer them. I'm excited to see how my clay mugs turn out but I did them all the same pattern. Very cool ideas! Thanks again!!!

I look forward to seeing how these look after glazing. The last couple appear to be a little muddy/over-mixed. Were the results what you expected?

The last one was nearing the limit. Eventually the colors blend. Up close you can see those last two. The lines are pretty fine but they are there. I like it when I get the over mix combined with more “open” areas though. It’s kind of a cool contrast. I much appreciate your comment Jeff!

How do you deal with the air bubbles that get trapped with all the stacking of layers? You could see some in there. If you wedge them out, you’d lose the marbling.

Jenny Caldwell You’re right, I would lose the marbling. I try to roll clay on when possible. I really don’t have issues with air bubbles in pieces. Centering and coming helps get most of not all of them out. Sometimes I find a few when I open but then they’re gone. If there are any left over I haven’t seen them. And I let the work dry really well so if there were any the air trapped inside isn’t an issue. Potter secret: Air bubbles are only problems because they trap moist air. If they work is totally dry it shouldn’t cause any poppy that.

I’m glad you said that about moist air! I tried to convince someone recently that you don’t have to put a hole in even an enclosed form if it’s fully dry and he was insistent that it would explode in the kiln and take out half the kiln load with it. It’s the steam that expands and causes explosions. Good to know you haven’t found them to be a problem in throwing. Thanks!

Jenny! You’re one of the few who know. Please spread the word! Ha. Maybe I’ve been lucky so far. Thanks Jenny!

At 1:28 they look like forbidden sandwiches forbidden because you shouldn't eat clay

Very nice video! Just wondering what you do with trimmings?
@CeramicJim
@CeramicJim 3 года назад
It depends. Sometimes I save them right away and soften/rewedge them. Other times I collect them all in a colored bin. Then I recycle that clay into a mystery batch... or i just throw it away later.

I really want to try stains, alas, its $26 for 100g here 😭. These look amazing!

Holy cow! That’s expensive! Even for stains. Try US Pigment Corporation in Elgin, IL. If you can order from them they should be cheaper. Thank you for your kind words 😁
