Marc-André Hamelin has a marvelous, curious mind. While we chatted before his Tiny Desk concert, he snooped around the CD shelves near my desk, commenting on a few rarities and sharing his own eclectic tastes, including a crazy RU-vid mashup of all 15 Shostakovich symphonies stacked on top of each other.
The Boston-based Montreal native is regarded as one of his generation’s most technically astounding pianists, but he’s no empty virtuoso. His interpretations are probing, precise and warm - keen to bring out humor when necessary. He routinely performs the world’s most treacherous repertoire with his characteristic ease. I’ve witnessed him practically reduce a concert grand to matchsticks, and I’ve heard him tenderly caress a late Schubert sonata.
Hamelin’s colossal breadth of repertoire is on display in this smart set of pieces. He begins in the 18th century with the off-kilter antics of C.P.E. Bach - a rondo that stops, starts and swerves with the spirit of improvisation. His limpid rendition of William Bolcom’s “Graceful Ghost Rag” (from 1970) emphasizes the bittersweet harmonies with unhurried elegance.
Hamelin saves the rock and roll for last - a piece of his own based on what he calls “possibly the oldest popular song in existence.” Filtered through his lightning-fast fingers, the medieval tune “L’homme armé” struts mischievously, cascades swiftly and expands to a thunderhead of glorious sound.
SET LIST:
C.P.E. Bach: Rondo in C Minor
William Bolcom: “Graceful Ghost Rag”
Marc-André Hamelin: Toccata on “L’homme armé”

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

That concert was the most incredible and emotional performance I've ever seen in my life, he finished the Dukas sonata and he had tears pouring out of him- it's the only time I've ever seen a pianist so emotional after a performance... The fact that it was Marc-Andre Hamelin sharing such a personal performance in such a small venue, performing one of the most incredible solo piano works ever written- it was truly a transcendental experience.

I think it’s preferred by some due to the cut overtones and it gives it a much crisper sound, but as a pianist I can certainly say it makes early French music such as rameau rlly hard cuz of repeated notes and the different mechanism of action on uprights

That 3rd piece (the one he wrote) has (to me) lots of Ravel qualities to it and maybe just a tiny hint of Gershwin. His mastery of so many different genres is amazing and I'm sure it all contributes to his own compositions. He started off with baroque precision and clarity, followed up with romantic-tinged ragtime, and ended with an impressionistic bombastic soundscape. I've just discovered him with this tiny desk concert and am thankful to the youtube algorithms.

More of this, please! Classical musicians who write their own music are my favorite. Hamelin has been my most beloved musician for so long, and I love his original compositions. The love for the classical tradition he was brought up in is still there in his music, while the undeniable influence of the contemporary sound world permeates the whole. There is a similar quality to Bolcom's piece. I get the impression from Bolcom's and Hamelin's piece here of watchmakers- meticulous ordering of complex webs of sound and fusions of genre to create something personal to them as individuals.
