I totally understand the vibe of being surrounded by random objects that have meaning to you. I'm flanked by all sorts of weird (mostly old) stuff, including a Cylon (Battlestar Gallactica) figure, a Vectrex videogame console, tarot cards, brain posters, native American pottery and carvings, butterfly knives, a 1979 rotary telephone, comic books, and a lot more. Thanks to Warren and MDN for this great tour! Sending good vibes without phase cancellation to you up the 5 from Carlsbad!

I remember coming across a video of MDN talking about making tracks sound huge and full using Mid-Side EQ and ever since then, been captivated by his approaches. This video was extremely entertaining and insightful into his workflow and taste. As a drummer, we sometimes paint ourselves into a corner by focusing on the 'lick of the day' or how many plies our drum kits have, but I promised myself I would branch out and absorb all I could about actually recording and mixing ourselves so that if one day I found myself doing it on my own or with a grammy-nominated engineer, I would be miles ahead of the guy who could only just play. Thank you so much Warren for putting this content out there - it makes all of us better ARTISTS, MUSICIANS, and CREATORS which at the end of the day, is what we are!!

A lot of my gear was inconsistent until we finally burned up one leg of the underground main and the electric company came out and repaired it. That pretty much solved all of those weird issues I was having, but further conditioning etc only made life easier. Of course I really enjoy Marc’s content. A lot of dreamy equipment in there, and I now get a better picture of what he meant when he said the 10% rule so many videos ago. He elaborated, it’s a little here, a little there, and it all adds up to create his final sound… that he eventually tires of. ;) Now about that Rickenbacker…

Funny, the minute I saw those old cameras I knew it was because of JFK/Zapruder. I also was fascinated by that for a while and love the look of that 60's hardware. The 60's seemed like a cool time. Everyone was well dressed and smoking and drinking everywhere lol. Really enjoyed this studio tour. Seems to me more and more that money is best spent on hardware compressors and one or two good bus EQ. Everything else can really be done in the box now.

Big props to Marc for keeping the old 388 rolling! ;:-) Love those things!, and always kick myself for not buying one back in the day. They're also a decent PA mixer in a pinch ;:-) I know a couple people that have a Fairchild(or remake) or the Shadow Hills, and like Marc they don't really use them so much for compression. They barely kiss the gain reduction and instead use them for tone. I got to borrow the 500 series version of the Optograph many years ago. Really cool piece!. I always dig these really creative home spaces with all the goodies........high level candy store nerd out joy! :-)

I love the fact (and a little jealous) that he still has his 4 track cassette recorder. I wish I had kept my Tascam Portastudio 1 and 2. Try changing the op amps in the 5500 for none potted ones if you're getting noise. You can get them from CAPI. I had the 5500 for a while and I occasionally got some weird noise like wind coming out of it. Sent it to HHB in the UK who changed a load of stuff, charged me a load of money and didn't solve the problem. I had some CAPI pres so I tried swapping the op amps myself and it sorted it. I also felt like it improved the top end on the eq. In the end I sold it because it gave me some other intemittent problems with the power supply and I didn't trust HHB if it went down. At some point I'm going to get a pair of discrete 550 modules so I can just fix them myself if issues arise. I do miss the sound

There are plenty of pros using plug-ins exclusively that get some phenomenal mixes. Andrew Scheps would explain it as neither is better, their just different. Just the same as no two 1176's sound the same. Michael Brauer has been putting out mixes with almost exclusive use of plug-ins, and has verified with his mastering engineers that they are every bit as excellent as his hardware mixes.

I found this out after spending too many hours in front of a screen with my online Berklee Pro tools courses on top of working on mu own sessions… don’t set for longer than 30 min before a body a body movement break. Super important for your health.

I wouldnt mind hearing more about the Trinnov sometime Marc. There are some other much cheaper options, for example I have SoundID Reference but tbh I am have gone back to mixing with it off. I find that I just trust my monitors without it a bit more and I use EQ's (e.g. a low pass on the master bus) for tuning midrange and low-end instead of the "flat" setting on SoundID. I have a feeling its very difficult to do accurate measurement without that 3-d microphone) all I know for sure is that my mixes dont automatically translate just because they sound good on the flat setting. Curious to hear a no bs talk about to good bad and the ugly of room correction.

@@spikewilliamz8803 Perhaps, I'm not 100% sure but I've never had the opportunity to A/B their stuff - or experience it myself at all actually. MEGA nerd alert... crazy nerd stuff follows: I did some research on their algorithms last year and they do have some very slick stuff and some patents on a good bit of it, but they also use a fairly old school method of room measurement (pseudo-random sequences) and I believe that the modern scientific literature (at least my read of it) shows that freq sweeps (used by REQ Wizard and SoundID etc) are at least as good. The correction itself is a relatively straightforward DSP operation once its calculated from the measured room response, done by applying an optimized set of parametric phase and amplitude "equalizers" using a fixed number of parameters so it can be computed in near real time. Typically the low-mids are corrected using whats called an FIR filter that gets slower the lower the frequency (because it needs to cover an entire cycle of the waveform in real time). Due the lag required to process lower frequencies, they are typically done with separate filters (IIR filters) that are faster to compute. This combo filter DSP setup is basically the "Mixed" filter mode in SoundID. The thing that is really special about their system, I *think** is that microphone. Using that they get time information as the sound passes over the three sensors that enables them to reconstruct a 3-d wave _field_ (e.g. what it looks like in the entire room roughly speaking) as opposed to just a single mic than only captures a wave form at a single point. I believe that Sound ID attempts to do the same thing using the many measurements. This is highly likely to be less accurate, using averaging or something. What is not clear to me so far is whether or not that inaccuracy results in audibly worse correction or not. All that said, I believe their device itself is pretty much a PC with cards for I/O, maybe DSP. It is very likely in my estimation that its possible to build that device for $100, think about how cheap a killer reverb pedal is today. So anyway as far as I can tell, they have some sauce for sure. I am super super interested to hear if a pro feels its worth the $$ and when its on and when its not. If Trinnov made a unit for $500 and I could rent the microphone I would buy one TOMORROW even just to try it out.

Out of all the incredibly cool kit in the video I have the most boring question of all: What are you using for you monitor over the desk? About to go with a similar setup and move my small monitor off to the side. Pros/cons? Love your setup and overall vibe.. and the toys!

Such an inspiring video. Are those custom reels Marc is using in his TASCAM 388? If so, where'd he have them made? I love how the colors match the colors used on the machine - very clean.

I noticed the Analog tube at-101(not sure if that is correct). I have seen something like that in a photo in Abbey Road Studio many many years ago. I also saw it in Mix magazine that was a copy of the original, (in the 90"s or early 2000"s)which was selling new @ $20,000.00. So when Marc said, just the sound of it, I knew what he was talking about.
