This is why Carson will always be the greatest. His sincere appreciation for all disciplines of the performance arts. And his respect for all types of performers.
@jesusranch34 Yes. And his appreciation for his viewers, as well. Never, ever foisted his personal feelings about religion or politics on his audience. So cool.
I enjoyed Marcel Marceau’s ironic cameo in Mel Brooks’ film, Silent Movie. Edit: Ironic, because he speaks in the film. A mime speaking, for the first time on film, in a movie that is completely silent. Brilliant.
When ever Marcel or other mimes or clowns appeared on any show - Ed Sullivan, Carson - I would change the channel and then turn back to the show when their act was over. Just entertainments that were not my cup of tea. Thanks so much for posting Carson!
I've been blessed to have seen Marcel Marceau live in the 70's at St Louis Powell Hall. Thoroughly captivating. "The Alchemist " act was otherworldly. Always a Marcel Marceau fan. A true Legend of the Arts 💜
love how Johnny steps into mime . We ought remember how he climbed into the business from being a magician to being one of the greatest entertainers of all time. He eventually not only took time off but had the network pay for it . Brilliant!
Marcel Marceau was Johnny's guest many times. Johnny always came across as fascinated with Marcel's skill which drew me in. Two legends that were always great.
Oh that was brilliant! I loved Johnny C learning from the genius Marcel! It has to be one of my favourite uploads so far! Thank you so much for sharing it with us so everyone can learn about the art of mime from the Master!
Fun stuff... I have to comment though regarding The video portion where Johnny is asked to lift Marcel and at first he can and then Marcel tells Johnny to lift him again and Johnny can't lift him. Marcel's claim is that energy is pulling him towards the floor - what Marcel does is one of the oldest tricks in the world. You can make the same claim to a friend that you have the ability of using your energy to draw you toward the ground. Here's what you do and it's exactly what Marcel did:. In the same manner as shown on the show ask someone to lift you from behind but stiffen your body. They'll be able to lift you up. Then have them release their hold and slump and loosen your body, If they can even get you a quarter of an inch off the floor it's quite a feat. This is exactly what Marcel does in this demonstration. First he stiffens his body making it easy for Johnny to lift him then on the second try he simply totally relaxes body and Johnny has difficulty. No magic or mysterious energy is here just basic physics. But I agree with the others Johnny was an absolute treasure at what he did Jay Leno was too. Best of all both Johnny and Jay when you watched them on The Tonight show, you had no idea what their political beliefs were or their political party; they were there to entertain everybody, All of us who were watching, as one big family. Something that is sorely missed in today's late night talk shows - they could learn a lot from Johnny and Jay.
As you're uploading these new excellent videos, might you please in the description say who the other guest(s) are please, especially for those a little younger who can't recognise who are on the chairs! Thanks so much for these incredible uploads. I've rediscovered my love of Buddy Hackett!
The 1970’s was perhaps the prime of The Tonight Show. Edgy enough because the times allowed it. Brave enough because people were allowed to talk about social issues without censorship. Funny enough because people could take a joke and not get easily offended. The talk shows today are a joke, doesn’t matter if they’re late night, early morning or afternoon. Celebrities like Kylie Jenner are cardboard, they are so one dimensional and boring it’s probably better if the host didn’t have anybody. What happened in this Tonight Show clip could never happen again. America has two younger generations that are extremely sensitive and the controlling of everything by big corporations ensures that money is all that matters.
@@jpc2470 Thing is, most people didn’t know that. I know Kylie Jenner is full of crap because she is always on her social media profiles and she has done little besides being a socialite. It’s so painfully obvious. Johnny Carson and his generation were more subtle. I don’t even like John Wayne, largely for his conservative politics. Nobody is saying these old Hollywood entertainers were perfect behind the scenes, because they weren’t. People are too wrapped up in learning about celebrities outside of their show business persona and modern Hollywood culture today is a joke. I’ve been there several times over the past 10 - 15 years. In conclusion, Hollywood did a lot of stuff behind the curtain, but because technology was limited to a small television and only reading newspapers and magazines, most people didn’t know about the bad things.
I may be the rebel in this bunch here. But pantomime always seemed silly to me. I understand it was a fad back in the 60s and 70s, but today…? When something is popular everyone seems to become interested in someway. I understand that.
No disrespect, but... I don't get it. I know what mimes do, but is this really all that impressive? He was far more interesting during the interview than performing.
