Hi, this is PART 3 of a job lot of faulty game consoles purchased from Marcel in the Netherlands. In this video I attempt to repair a faulty Sony PlayStation Portable 2000 model (PSP).
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince.

This video brought be memories of me taking apart my PS1, Dual Shock 1, Sony CD Walkman and Disc Player apart. I found out they all used the same motor/CD holder. My PS1 motor and disc holder broke, and I was desperate so I took the Dual Shock motor and my (sister's) disc holder so I can get the PS1 working again. lol

It was probably the horizontal motor. What you should measure is how much resistance it presents, if it is above 60 ohms, the motor surely has corrosion between the collector and the brushes. It can be opened and cleaned, but often the brushes are damaged when placed in their original position.

Another great video! I did want to mention: Pot modding laser devices is a way to kill their lifespan. The output is increased at a cost to device lifespan. It's almost never worthwhile because the device will fail sooner, or sometimes immediately. Take it from a years-long laser enthusiast. The lasers are configured to work within a small level of tolerance (to save on costs), and moving beyond the tolerance will cause heat issues, often catastrophic. Manufacturers cover the potentiometer in Loctite, which is that reddish substance blocking the dial from turning. Also, optical media drives read the disc starting from the center of the disc. So every time a device is booted up, the laser carriage (a functioning one) will reset itself to the position where it is closest to the center of the disc. I hope this helps, and if you are already aware of this, I apologize. I'm just trying to help. I was mega impressed with your skills when you changed over those capacitors on the PS3 (fat, non-slim edition) and got it working!

At least you got it working =D It's a shame you couldn't adjust that pot, but maybe that wasn't the issue. I initially suspected the stepper motor - the get jammed up and stop moving properly. Although it could have been the laser as you did prove the carriage was free after taking it to bits. You need to get a super small jewlers screwdriver set for that pot adjustment! I've just bought a PSP-2000 earlier this year in excellent condition even with its original battery still holding charge, though I haven't tested the UMD drive and you may have got me wanting to now. I had a first gen years ago (in bits now as it had various faults so I did a you and fixed it beyond repair) and even though it's a dated console now I thought I'd like to have one again, and bonus when I got it, I realised with a bit of work I could access all my old PS1 Classics I bought on the PlayStation Store years ago. It's a nice console. I may have to buy something cheapo from Cash Converters and give it a go.

Hi Vince, Really enjoying the channel, I have a suggestion! How about some "how to" videos on how to solder, basic electronics, electronic components, how to use the tools that you use i.e. multimeter, what are the essential tools and consumables in your toolbox, basic fault finding and troubleshooting. I'm thinking electronics here but this could be expanded to other areas i.e.household, car, mechanical etc. I think that you would be able to explain all this really well and that it would make a/some great videos and would be a good place for someone to start. Best regards Alan

Thanks for your uploads mate always very interesting Sadly I got called out halfway through the video on a repair job so not sure if you got it fixed But I wanted to drop my view in I don't believe there was any issue with the laser itself as that would not stop the laser unit from moving back and forth If you moved the laser unit had way or even to the outer side of where the disk would be the moment you close the door even without a disk the laser unit should automatically move back to park Lasers have a little button or sensor in them that would make contact while in park it's white possible the sensor / button may have an issue and making the controller think it's already parked Other likely reasons for the laser not to move is possibly the door and the button isn't correctly making contact Or very likely the motor and or gears have suffered a problem maybe a weak motor

we actually do not need the UMD we can just remove that optical drive just install the custom firmware first update it version 6.61 then install either LME or PRO 661 and modify the psp battery by opening the plastic cover of the battery (not the battery cover from psp case) and cut that small battery connected to the circuitboard with positive and negative 2 terminal (not on the 3 pin terminal) and next get a new battery like high miliamp that fits into umd slot making sure to just cut plastic on umd door that sticks out so it won't push the umd switch on the side and not the middle switch. Next solder the new battery on original circuit board by connecting positive and negative terminal then put it the battery plastic cover that you just cut and tape it off. next insert the battery back to the psp making sure if fits nicely and your done.

I have PSP 2000 with similiar problem. Mine just like yours didn't read any game discs. I've checked curiosly what's going on, and with mine case i think there are no "reaction" from the rails of the laser. Disc spins, laser maybe try to read, but all laser assembly is doesn't moving on the rails. As you see on first minutes of your video, yours maybe have same issue, because if you insert game disc in your 3000 PSP you hear the laser moving after a few seconds from starting spining the disc. If you put game in 2000 PSP it's just spinning over and over, so it doesn't move the laser assembly.

Hi Vince, well, I don't know very much about drives like this, but what I noticed is the scraping noise in ocasions where the faulty drive's laser was actually moving. That same scraping noise was not there when you tried a fully working drive; instead I heard a smooth motor and gearing. So I wonder: could it be something mechanical? Maybe the motor (as some other people suggest), or maybe some gears that transfer the turning of the motor into the movement of the laser. Anyway, I think it is something mechanical rather than electronical; and it causes too much friction to allow it to work every time (when it ocasionally works, it was, one way or antother, able to overcome the friction for a second). Anyway, nice video again!

In the future if the resistance goes down the voltage goes down but the current goes up(up to the limit of the supply current). And if the resistance goes up the voltage goes up(up to the limit of the supply voltage) and the current goes down. The maths is volts ÷ current = resistance, volts ÷ resistance = current, resistance x current = voltage. If you want to look it up your self it's called Ohms Law. LEDs which a laser is a type of can only handle a certain voltage and current. So you may want to look at the data sheet for the laser if you can find it online. The supply voltage would be on input of the potentiometer. When you turned the potentiometer and it went to 2 meg ohms there wouldn't of been enough current to power it even though the voltage would of been high.
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 4 года назад
Thanks PDS, so if a laser was starting to die and was failing to read discs. Let's say you wanted to get some more life out of it by giving it more power. Am I correct in thinking you would need to up the current, so reduce the resistance to up the current. So going from 1.48K Ohm to for example 1.05K Ohm would give it more current which may work. But then if you went to far and went down to 500 Ohm (0.5K Ohm) there might not be enough voltage to make it work. Am I completely missing the mark here????
@pds8475
@pds8475 4 года назад
@@Mymatevince if the laser was weakening then upping the current would make it brighter but in doing makes it fail faster. So you would get a bit more life out of it, but it is only a short term solution. obviously the more you have to raise the current/ lower the resistance the shorter life expectancy.
@Mymatevince
@Mymatevince 4 года назад
@@pds8475 That makes sense. Thanks PDS. I suppose it could be useful for fault finding because then you could definitely prove the fault onto the laser by making it work if only just for a short time :-)
@pds8475
@pds8475 4 года назад
@@Mymatevince Yeah but like I said before try to find the maximum current rating of the laser then you can work out what resistance to not go below in order to not blow the laser with the formula volts ÷ the max current = the lowest resistance you can set the potentiometer at. So as an example say there is a 5 volt supply the max current rating of the laser is 200mA, then 5 ÷ 0.2 = 25 so the lowest you could set the potentiometer is at 25Ω
@michaelmcdonald2348
@michaelmcdonald2348 4 года назад
I don't believe the laser was the problem, it might have been worth removing the laser then cleaning and lubricating the sled mechanism the laser rides along, and possibly seeing if you could get some contact cleaner into the motor. It could be that the motor is faulty, I've had that on CD players. Adjusting the potentiometer should always be a last resort as it is more than likely to either damage the delicate laser diode, or shorten it's life. Good result in the end in any case. By the way I always sneeze in three's, usually while holding a cup of coffee. The first 2 sneezes are fine and the third always results in spilled coffee.

i don't know for sure but i think your assumption that the motor wasn't working right at the end seems the most likely it was moving much slower and it didn't sound the same as other 2 motors even when it was spinning up. either way good to see a working psp, personally i think sony has made the best handhelds out there but it's been impossible for anyone to make any real impact on the portable market vs nintendo. the gamegear was technically speaking years ahead of the gameboy but it failed to compete and sony hit the same wall the power of the psp and vita was miles ahead of the DS versions but games like pokemon, kirby and mario have kept nintendo top dog no matter what.

Oh and by the way, is there a possibility you could replace the defective potentiometer with a resistor of a nearby value? (sorry, this may be a stupid question, but I cannot see the board as I am blind) Ok, that way you will never ever be able to change the value again by turning a potentiometer, but it may be an option to get the drive working again if you are of course able to solve the problem with the laser that is not consistantly moving.

I ran into a similar problem on a PS3 before where the laser wouldn't move along the track. The problem in that case was a bad stepper motor in the laser assembly. Might be the same problem with that PSP. The Ebay link below gives you a picture of which part I'm referring to. Not sure how hard it'd be to find that part for a PSP. www.ebay.com/itm/Laser-Worm-Slide-Motor-For-Sony-PlayStation-3-Slim-KEM-450AAA-Blu-ray-Drive/231725676601?hash=item35f3ed3839:g:2nsAAOSw~bFWJRBY:sc:USPSFirstClass!85021!US!-1

Just wanted to say when using a umd movie it loads on the video menu part and not the game menu part. You can see what I mean when it autoloads the movie it switched to the video menu.

Can anyone recommend a decent replacement battery please? I bought 2 from amazon and neither hold a charge.

Get a oem one. Do not buy China off brand. Look for one that looks similar to oem.

Hi Jamie, this lot came from a viewer in the Netherlands but normally I search eBay for 'faulty', 'broken', 'spares or repair' or 'not working'. This will normally bring up something interesting. But like always, the odd time you can get a bargain on eBay but often they are over priced or unfixable, as they have already had a reapir attempted and then sold as untested :-)
