In this video, residents of Bakelo IDP camp are happy to use their skills to create beautiful handicraft that they can sell for revenue. They express their joy at being able to relieve their stress by working and creating something. They are using material that was purchased locally in Debre Birhan using Dir Biyabir funds and delivered directly to them by our local partner ADHENO.
Dir Biyabir funded the purchase of material for handicraft for distribution to skilled artisans in the Bakelo Camp for Amhara civilians violently displaced from Wellega by Oromo extremists. This project was implemented shortly after the delivery of emergency food aid to the camp in January 2024 and is intended to to support these skilled artisans to generate revenue for themselves, so they are not dependent on aid. This project was implemented locally by our partner ADHENO.
Material distributed includes cotton for women to spin, looms for weavers to weave the spun cotton into traditional blankets (Gabis), dry grass for weaving baskets, and yarn for crocheting
