Here's the third fly of a new series of videos I'm doing apply named the "Framing Flies Series", because I'll be tying these for framing. Right on the nose. Bong. This series is tying tutorials for all 11 dry flies profiled in Mike Valla's book "Tying Catskill Style Dry Flies". This is probably my favorite fly tying related book ever. The stories are incredible. It's not just about tying. It's about the history of flies tied in this style. If you don't own this book, you can get it here:
signed copies and there's only a couple left.

I admire the discipline with that thread - less is more. Very nice tie.

Great tying Nick!! Very nice. March Browns are my favorite also. From early spring into the late summer they produce in the creeks & streams in western NC for me. Thanks for great instruction on a classic!!

Valla seems to like a longer wing. Along the years I too have evolved tying a longer wing on my Catskill dries too. And also the tail length. That heavily barred wood duck feather you used really stands out, which I love!

I think the Turle knotwas used for eyeless hooks. It has a wrap behind the eye. Thisis another lovely Catskill fly by the way. :-)

A bleached hare's mask under fur makes a nice body ribbed with a furnace colored hackle stem

The wing feather looks more like a dyed mallard

Hey Gene, it does look different than your typical WD feather, I agree. Unless you have a skin it’s tough to find them cause there might only be one on either side. Sometimes none. Sometimes 2 if you’re lucky. It’s the barred wood duck right before the bars are made. Thanks
